If you’re not familiar with the Simon Kennedy Band it might be down to the fact that the UK isn’t the first place you’d expect to find a gospel blues band who know how to groove!
That’s exactly what the Simon Kennedy Band are about, the virtuosity and feel that you would normally associate with Blues, a tight rhythm section, funky grooves that their Scottish counterparts The Average White Band would be proud of and gospel inspired lyrics that would make Blind Willie Johnson proud!
Lyrically the album deals with universal issues that face all believers in modern society but fits it into the classic blues framework, which gives the songs both a classic feel while still remaining relatively modern sounding. Songs like the albums opening “The King Shows You Who’s Boss” deals with the futility of living a life purely based in earthly desires and chasing after the things that don’t really matter.
The song “Lord I Pray” encourages to the listening to Pray Without Ceasing no doubt inspired by 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” and “Keep Me Keeping On” inspirited by Philippians 3:13-14 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.
This collection of songs are biblically inspired but also contain the raw honesty that you come to hear in the lyrics of Blues songs along with the virtuosity of musicianship but combined with the groove elements of Funk takes songs that are even more reflective in their lyrical nature into the realms of upbeat and up-tempo numbers that you can easily tap your foot to and would transfer extremely well in a live setting. So whether you’re a fan of Blues, Gospel, Funk, Jazz or none of the above, check the album out anyway for the sheer quality of the musicianship and songs.
