Anthony Geraci
Blues Music Award-winning keyboardist, songwriter, and composer Anthony Geraci unleashes a lifetime of greatness on his new solo album Blues Called My Name. Available now on Blue Heart Records, the set finds Geraci sounding better than ever on a winning mix of vocal tracks and instrumentals.
Geraci produced the record himself and did a fine job of showcasing his mighty style on piano and Hammond organ. He’s backed on these wonderfully-captured moments by Paul Loranger on acoustic bass, Jeff Armstrong on drums, and Charlie O’Neal on guitar, a tight and capable trio with a deep pocket. Special guests including Monster Mike Welch, Erika Van Pelt, Anne Harris, Sugar Ray Norcia, and Walter Trout augment the core four-piece studio band in the best-possible ways and bring their heavyweight vibes to Geraci’s blues experience.
Anthony Geraci has been playing the daylights out of the blues for the last 40 years. Originally from New Haven, Connecticut and now based in Boston, Massachusetts, he’s an original member of Sugar Ray and the Bluetones and Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters. He has performed with the likes of B.B. King, Muddy Waters and Jimmy Rogers, as well as countless other legends of the blues and important contemporary acts. In addition, Geraci graduated from Berklee College of Music with a B.A. and earned an M.A. from Skidmore College. He’s been nominated for a Grammy Award, nominated fifteen times for Blues Music Awards and won a Blues Music Award. He’s considered one of the top keyboard players in the blues scene and anything he’s involved in is worthy of your listening time.
Geraci kicks his party off with “That Old Pine Box,” a hard-punching song about dying that features Sugar Ray Norcia on lead vocals. It’s an energetic ode to the acceptance of one’s mortality and is less threatening and more spiritually enlightened than typical blues fare. Here, the pine box isn’t a trap but a vehicle going home, which is an entirely different point of view than the “Hellhound On My Trail” Robert Johnson-isms so prevalent in blues lyrics. Geraci tears it up on the piano like the big dog he is and will get you dancing and thinking quickly.
“The Blues Called My Name” is pure vintage heartbreak blues and absolutely smolders with the pain of it all. Monster Mike Welch jumps in on guitar and contributes some hot, snarling licks while Sugar Ray again croons out the vocals. Anthony Geraci plays this old-school blues style extremely well, anchoring his piano accompaniment and solos way down in the groove. This is high-end playing and songwriting that demonstrates Geraci’s commitment to the blues and to the nuances involved in getting it just right.
Speaking of vintage, Geraci’s original instrumental boogie track “Boston Stomp” displays his mastery of the old ways and how he can make them jump once again. His left hand pumps out unstoppable bass lines while he takes commanding and intricate solos with his right. This one is nothing but fun and will light you up with a single spin.
Geraci takes the lead vocal position himself for the only time on the record on the upbeat “I Go Ooh.” The song is a dance floor filler that features a delicious swing feel and more big boss piano. Anthony’s vocals are just as enjoyable, however, and he should consider singing more of his own tunes. In any case, this is a rocking cut that’ll get you feeling good and isn’t that why we’re here?
Geraci and friends dip into Big Easy territory on the hip-shaking instrumental “Wading In The Vermilion,” which brings in Anne Harris on violin. Her presence and texture change the feel of the group in a subtle way that makes this one of Blues Called My Name’s best selections. There are no missteps on the record, though, and nothing here misses the mark. Anthony Geraci is a beast on all levels and may well be the finest keyboardist in roots music today. Give this one a revolution or two and see if you don’t agree.

Tony Mathews - Alien In My Own Home (1989)
Tony Mathews
A member of the Oklahoma jazz Hall of Fame, blues guitarist and vocalist Tony Mathews has been one of the West Coast’s finest studio musicians for over 40 years and has recorded and toured with Ray Charles, Little Richard, Billy Preston and Little Johnnie Taylor, to name a few. Presented here is a rare solo album Tony made in 1989 with the iconic eccentric genius known as Swamp Dogg who produced, arranged and wrote most of the album. A true labor of love for Swamp Dogg who has used Mathews on many of his own recordings over the years and his productions for other artists, the album is indeed a lost soul-funk-blues masterpiece.

Swamp Dogg - You Ain't Never Too Old To Boogie (1976)
Swamp Dogg
Jerry Williams (aka Swamp Dogg) put aside the proto-disco moves that occasionally dotted 1975's Have You Heard This Story? in favor of some tough, gritty Southern funk with a soulful edge for his next album, 1976's You Ain't Never Too Old to Boogie. Williams has said he originally intended for the album to be called "It's a Bitch," and political correctness aside, the down and dirty sass of that title suits this music -- with Travis Wammack on guitar, Williams on keys, and Bob Wray and Jimmy Evans on bass and drums, this is a no nonsense, high energy R&B session that's not afraid to draw some rock & roll sweat, especially on the high-energy title track. You Ain't Never Too Old to Boogie is less willfully eccentric than most of Swamp Dogg's work of the '70s, and most of the songs are worldly-wise meditations on the male-female relationship, though the long spoken coda to "Believe in Me Baby" will remind anyone listening that this is indeed Swamp Dogg, and the crazed braggadocio/music biz lament of "It's a Bitch" is both funny and telling. Swamp Dogg has made a lot of records more enjoyably twisted than You Ain't Never Too Old to Boogie, but it's as consistently funky and grooving as anything he ever cut, and it's one of the more underrated albums in his catalog.

The Ryan Harrington Band - On The Right Path (2019)
The Ryan Harrington Band
The Ryan Harrington Band initially came together in Dresden in the summer of 2017. Nicole Haensch and Ryan Harrington met Max Waechtler and started playing together. The trio found bassist, Matthias Baumhauer, in the summer of
2018 and Tobias Eberhardt joined up on Saxophone at the end of 2018. The Band rounded out its lineup with the addition of keyboardist, Kristian Kaiser in 2019.
Uniquely cool, original Blues describes the debut album from the soul-laced, fiery Blues band out of Dresden. 10 originals, guest appearances by Bernd "The Harp" Kleinow, Jason Craft on the Hammond Organ and John Horn on vocals are the highlights that make this album shine including "The Choir" which can be heard on three tracks.
On the right Path truly spans the musical palette of the Blues. From the funky opening track „Why don‘t you just leave me alone“ to the Texas Blues Shuffle of „I couldn‘t see“ on to the jazz influenced „Strolling“ and „That Baby of mine“, „On the right Path“ is a musical tour de force with something for every Blues fan, young or old, new to Blues or the cagey veteran. We hope you enjoy this album, we had a great time making it!

The Derek Trucks Band - The Derek Trucks Band (1997)
The Derek Trucks Band
Derek Trucks began building his own legacy at the age of 12, playing scorching slide guitar that prompted many to hypothesize that he was the reincarnation of Duane Allman in the flesh. The nephew of Allman Brothers Band drummer Butch Trucks, Derek was virtually born into a show business family, but don't think for a minute that he doesn't create his own opportunity. Backed by a skin-tight rhythm section and complimented by a top-notch organist, the youthful guitarist blazes through new arrangements of jazz and blues classics. He turns the trumpet wizardry of Miles Davis into slide-guitar magic, and his readings of a couple of Coltrane tunes pack a terrific punch. The band also contribute several of their own compositions, paving the way for a bright future as a group of tight-knit, talented musicians. A flawless recording.

Eric Heideman - Get Off My Back (2018)
Eric Heideman
Ever since Eric first picked up a guitar, the instrument captivated his heart and soul. The young blues guitarist and singer has continued to be inspired by old and new blues musicians such as Robert Johnson, T-Bone Walker, B.B. King, Ronnie Earl, Danielle Nicole, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Jonny Lang. Eric has sat in with his guitar teacher and Friend JW Jones at the sand dollar lounge in Las Vegas. "Get Off My Back" is Eric's first full-length Album. "The Crow Cries at Midnight" delves deep into Eric's personal life. "It's a song that's very close to my heart. I wrote it about a friend and bandmate who lost his life due to suicide a few years back. He ultimately inspired me to sing and to write my own music, and I felt it necessary to honor him on my first album. "Outrun the Fire" concerns police violence towards African Americans. "I feel like as a country we could be in a better place when it comes to racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia. We all need to band together if something is to change in this world. No, I am not an African-American and I will never experience what it is like to racially profiled, but to actually experience change, we need to stand up with anyone who is oppressed and we need to stand against racism and bigotry. Many Eric Heideman fans claim that he has "an old soul" and "a stage persona perfect for the blues."

Duane Betts - Sketches Of American Music (2018)
Duane Betts
Sketches of American Music is the debut EP from Duane Betts. Betts certainly has the pedigree as the son of Dickey Betts, but also has strong chops of his own. For much of his career, Betts has considered himself a guitarist, but has put a focus on singing in recent years. His style will certainly draw comparisons to bands like the Drive By Truckers.
The album opens strong with “Taking Time,” a great southern rock track that makes you want to roll the windows down and hit the road. Betts co-wrote the track with Stoll Vaughan, who also produced the album. Vaughan co-wrote four of the EP’s six tracks, including “Downtown Runaround,” a foot stomping rocker with an attention grabbing, gritty riff. Antoine Arvizo also has a writing credit on the track. Vaughan’s other co-writes with Betts include “When We Get Home” and the album closer, “Ride It Out.”
The only track that Duane Betts didn’t write on the album is “California Blues,” which was originally written and recorded by Dickey Betts & Great Southern back in 1977. Duane’s version is about two and half minutes longer featuring a beautiful, uplifting guitar solo that really soars, definitely a major highlight of the album.
Sketches of American Music is an excellent debut album from Duane Betts. He’s certainly keeping busy with his own solo career and his work with the Devon Allman Project. Betts and Allman are writing an album together that could be released in early 2019. With that and a potential full-length album on the way, fans certainly have a lot to look forward to.

Federico Luiu - Walkin' the Blues (2019)
Federico Luiu
Federico Luiu began to develop his deep passion for music at the age of thirteen. His attraction to the guitar was inspired by his father, who is an exceptional guitarist. His father's love for blues and country music led Federico to the legendary music of Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King, B.B. King and Albert Collins. The musical styles of Joe Bonamassa, Matt Schofield and Danny Gatton helped Federico's shape his own guitar style. Natural talent, combined with endless hours of practice, enabled Federico to move quickly from intimate living room performances to major concerts in a number of renowned clubs in Sardinia, Italy. In 2012, Federico moved from Italy to Canada. His exceptional guitar playing was immediately recognized in the Toronto music scene and Federico was soon found performing with such great musicians as Jorn Andersen (Alannah Miles), Michael Fonfara (Lou Reed), Al Cross (Big Sugar), Joey Landreth (The Bros. . Landreth) and his musical idol Matt Schofield. After a while Federico founded the blues quartet Sons Of Rhythm. It was there that his songwriting talent came to the fore. Sons Of Rhythm is a successful blues band that has played at many festivals, including the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Porto Ferro Bluesunset Festival in Italy. In 2019, Federico began pursuing a solo career. This pursuit resulted in the creation of 'Walkin' The Blues', a seven track album, which introduces Federico's creative songwriting and great guitar playing. With guest artists such as Alexis Baro, Anthony Brancati, Joey Landreth, Matt Schofield and Alison Young, 'Walkin' The Blues' turns out to be an explosive mix of blues, rock, jazz and country music.
Federico opens his debut album 'Walkin' The Blues' with the swinging blues shuffle 'You Don't Love Me'. It's a radio-friendly song with a strong and catchy chorus. Bassist Simone Scanu and drummer Mauro Cau provide the swinging and driving groove and Federico Luiu shows from the very beginning of the song that he is a wonderful guitarist. With wonderfully beautiful and melodious strings, he immediately manages to impress. He also has a good and warm voice. The same can be said of backing singer Roberta Michele Quilico, who is explicitly present in this 'You Don't Love Me'. The horn players, with Anthony Brancati on tenor sax, Alison Young on baritone sax and Alexis Baro on trumpet, are excellent and create a big band feeling during 'You Don't Love Me'. This excellent opener makes us curious about the other songs on the album. We are not disappointed because Federico also charms us with the funky blues rocker 'Funky Bee'. Simone Scanu provides the funky groove with a dazzling funky bass line and the three wind players are once again explicitly present. Not only do they enrich the sound of 'Funky Bee', they also define the sound of this energetic 'Funky Bee'. Alberto Gurusi does an excellent job on the Hammond and we hear another great Federico Luiu on the guitar. With razor-sharp strings, this young guitarist once again shows his class.
It remains attractive and swinging in the flowing blues song 'All I Wanna Do, Is Play Them Blues', in which we learn that Federico only wants to play blues. Backing singer Roberta Michele Quilico provides an excellent and lively complement to Federico's voice. Alberto Gurrisi has a decisive presence on his Hammond throughout the song with swirling organ work, but Anthony Brancati on piano also contributes more than his bit. Of course, the young guy who only wants to play blues makes himself felt in 'All I Wanna Do, Is Play Them Blues'. He does that again outstandingly with a rousing and razor-sharp string solo that touches you to the bone. With the compelling blues ballad 'What You've Done To Me' we get the first and only resting point on the album. Alberto Gurrisi carries the melody of 'What You've Done To Me' with his warm Hammond Sounds and with a very handsome solo he crowns his excellent instrumental performance. The blazers are again very decisive in this very handsome ballad. There is a lot of pain in Federico's voice and his soulful and intense guitar solo will certainly give many music lovers goosebumps. We get a big band feeling with the swinging shuffle 'She's Gone'. This over six minute track, with Matt Schofield as guest guitarist, is the longest track on the album. Matt Schofield impresses with fantastic, dexterous string work and immediately puts his stamp on this very danceable song.
The album closes with two short instrumental songs, each of which lasts less than three minutes. They are two songs in which Federico Luiu can display his enormous class on the six-string frequently and with a lot of class. 'Otto' is an instrumental jazzy song. The strong and energetic rhythm section provides a fantastic groove, on which Hammond player Alberto Gurrisi and guitarist Federico Luiu can fully indulge and then these two fantastic musicians are at their best. Especially Federico Luiu knows how to impress in a great way with excellent and very fast guitar work. The same can be said of the closing 'Like A Woman', because the ingredients are the same here too, namely a crazy drum beat, a super fast pulsating bass line, great organ work and super fast and fantastic guitar work. With 'Walkin' The Blues' Federico Luiu has released an excellent debut album. It is almost inevitable that this album should open gates for this young, talented guitarist, singer and songwriter. Hopefully the concert organizers and club owners will pick up this album and invite Federico Luiu after the Covid 19 period to come and promote his album here in Europe. 'Walkin' The Blues' by Federico Luiu is a hit and highly recommended.

Juke Joint - It's Bluesrock, Baby (2022)
Juke Joint
Originally founded in Chur in 1982, the trio played on many stages in Switzerland until 1989 under the name The Slight Delay.
Now, around 30 years later, they are on the road again under a new name with blues rock covers from the 1960s and 1970s. Back to the roots! Like back then, they play numerous classics from bands like Fleetwood Mac, Jimi Hendrix, Yardbirds, Status Quo, Joe Bonamassa and Black Sabbath. This is loosened up by ZZ-Top and CCR hits and various classics by other blues and rock artists such as Elmore James, Robert Johnson or Leroy Carr.
As a trio - electrically charged electric guitar, electric bass and drums - they tour constantly through Switzerland. They are clearly addicted to the English blues rock of the sixties and seventies and even stand by it.
Look forward to guitar-heavy blues rock!
All three musicians have been present on the stages for more than 40 years: T-Bone-Tom has played in various cult bands such as TILT, ARCAS, STORKLANE, DIE DUFTEN TÜPEN or QUOMANIA for the past 500 months. The same applies to the strapping drummer Vinegar-Beat, who played along with MINIROCK or BLOWJOB, among others. Guitar plucker Shy-Boy worked for TILT, SLIGHT DELAY, TYTE STONE, CHEERS or DIE DUFTEN TÜPEN, among others.
So together you have quite a bit of stage experience and should know how to throw a party.

Randy McAllister - Diggin' For Sofa Change (1997)
Randy McAllister
"First rate drummer, harmonica player and potently soulful singer. His well crafted songs reveal a depth of creativity not only in the storytelling, social commentary and word play, but also in the sophisticated arrangements and blurring of stylistic boundaries. With an expressive vocal register falling somewhere between the soulful effervescence of Al Green and the blunt hammer of Johnny Taylor, a shrewd wit and admirable turn of a phrase, McAllister cements himself as a blues bard archetype".

Mike Katon And The Wild A'S - Boogie All Over Your Head (1984)
Mike Katon
Blues-rocker Katon's first album, from 1984, is still the one to beat. Recorded in his home on a four-track reel-to-reel deck, Katon and his then-current band, the Wild A's, blasted through a set of half a dozen originals and another six bandstand staples. Katon's Stratocaster is positively ripping on tracks like the opening "Miss Pearl" and his own "My Baby's Gone Crazy" and the title track. His slide work on "Honky Funk," another original, is every bit as fine as his single-string work, and shows a fine grasp of Delta blues playing brought to high volume blues-rock standards. His covers of shopworn standards like Willie Dixon's "I Just Want to Make Love to You," Don and Dewey's "Justine" and Chuck Berry's "Jo Jo Gunne" are pleasant enough, but his takes on Johnny Burnette's "Lonesome Train" and Mack Vickery's "Meat Man" are two more highlights to this purely rocking debut from this exciting performer.

Jumpin' The Gunn - Shades Of Blue (1993)
Jumpin' The Gunn
This album offers very good quality blues (nothing to throw away), navigating the spheres of a Chicago-blues, a West-side sound, and a blues-white respectful of the founders, including a very good cover of Johnny Winter's" Tired of trying " . The sound, in particular, is a far cry from blues-rock, a fortiori which has flourished since this decade. No beefed up guitar, no raging organ. No, it's more piano (bluesy, boogie or bassstring) and guitar in its clear or crunchie form.
It's in the slow blues and bluesy ballads that Jumpin' the Gunn makes the difference, especially since they give off a rare feel. Indeed, composed by Janis Joplin, of course), we were impressed by Vikki Kitson's clear, sure, nuanced and relatively powerful voice. A true phenomenon, which from the height of its 16/17 years, literally surprises the listener with this charming timbre, which has nothing youthful, even if the vocal cords are not scratched by years and bad habits. This recovery is magnificent, sublimated. Presented by powerful gospel choirs, Vikki raises her velvety voice, a blues piano interferes, some guitar notes. It stays smooth until the explosion of a pure pentatonic guitar solo.
«More and more», she plays a little in the same register, but leaning a little more towards the bluesy ballad with a jazzy pastel-tinted background, always with that expressive voice, which enchants, enchants. Furthermore, in certain bars, only a guitar arpeggio accompanies the music, which, due to its beauty, could be done a cappella. There's Sharleen Spiteri (from Texas) and Lydia Pense (from Coldblood), less sensual but with a little more freshness and occasionally a youthful, even naive touch that can sometimes erupt.
“Shades of Blues”, a more classic slow-blues, where we are entitled to the two-minute scratch solo (good but would have benefited from being shortened to half).
We end in grand style with a slow blues, "All I Say to You", played only by a melancholy guitar and piano, all in restraint, over which Vikki's refreshing voice gently rises. No artifice. Magnificent, velvety, a happiness, a contemplation, a blessing. Very rare. Andrew Gunn plays on the famous Gibson SG Custom
(the white one with three mics), no effect, alternating between clean, pure, full sounds, and others just coated with a slight amp saturation. His playing is more rooted in Chicago-Blues than Blues-rock or British-blues. Even if some solos evoke phrases from a young Peter Green and others from Gary Moore (much less saturated and much less technical). The album is personally produced by Mike Vernon (assisted by John Wooler), the official British-Blues producer, who is divided into passing some choirs and percussions. And he sure as hell invited Steve Potts
(from Booker T & the MG's!) to secure behind the drums. As long as you do, you might as well get the best.
