The Hudson River Rats - Get It While You Can (2003)

                                                               The Hudson River Rats
Bernard Purdie is no stranger to gritty, down-home funk and soul, and his collaboration with the R&B outfit Hudson River Rats on GET IT WHILE YOU CAN contains plenty of both. Jams like "You'd Better Watch Yourself" traffic in classic blues, while "Astronaut Lover" sounds like Professor Longhair dressed up and ready for a night on the town. Stax/Volt-style horn charts, swirling Hammond organ, soulful, gritty vocals, and Purdie's in-the-pocket grooves make GET IT WHILE YOU CAN as satisfying as a rack of ribs.

Brian Brickeen - I Sure Ain't Mr Right (2004)

                                                                  Brian Brickeen
Brian Brickeen began his musical career on the drum set, playing throughout the midwest with a variety of bands from rock and country to gospel to blues and jazz. His first exposure to Stevie Ray Vaughn awakened a passion for electric blues guitar, an instrument he then pursued in every spare moment. From SRV he then began studying and absorbing the work of other great blues artists such as Albert King, BB King, Son Seals, and Robben Ford as well as cross over artists such as Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. In 1996 he joined with Lawrence Wright in Kansas City, a former band member of Albert Collins and a midwest regional artist reknowned for his mastery of blues organ and piano. Brian received his true baptism into the blues over the subsequent years as he studied songwriting and musical expression under Lawrence's tutelage. With Lawrence's death in 2003, Brian carries on the tradition of the master with his debut CD release, now available in the summer of 2004. Mixing old and new, this work combines the traditional Austin rock/blues feel with a Kansas City swing to create a unique, driving sound with a taste of the contemporary. Showcasing both his drumming and guitar styles, this work contains 9 original tracks.

Michael Bloomfield - Cruisin' For A Bruisin' (1981)

                                                                 Michael Bloomfield
Michael Bloomfield (July 28, 1943 – February 15, 1981) was an American musician, guitarist, and composer, born in Chicago, Illinois, who became one of the first popular music superstars of the 1960s to earn his reputation almost entirely on his instrumental prowess, since he rarely sang before 1969 and 1970. Respected for his fluid guitar playing, Bloomfield knew and played with many of Chicago's blues legends even before he achieved his own fame, and was one of the primary influences on the mid-to-late 1960s revival of classic Chicago and other styles of blues music. In 2003 he was ranked at number 22 on Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and 42nd in 2011 by the same magazine. He was inducted in the Blues Hall of Fame in 2012 and with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.

Cruisin' for a Bruisin' is the last album by Mike Bloomfield released shortly before his tragic death by Takoma Records and produced by Norman Dayron. The album was recorded between October 27 and November 29, 1980 in San Francisco (California).

Mike Quick & The Soul Power Band - Time Change (2012) reposted

                                                                   Mike Quick
"Time Change" - the name says it all for Mike Quick's new album. Because if you still hear very sober blues rock with funky grooves in "Mission to Mars", the guitarist, who moved from New York to Florida, has now arrived at soul blues. And for him it's something between Otis Redding, Ray Charles and sunny funk and even a bit of reggae. And instead of a spartan trio or quartet, his band now has everything needed for a fat soul sound: keyboards, horns, background vocals-and above all his guitar, which stands out sharply from the sound.

The Maynard Brothers - Nasty Packages (2003)

                                                               The Maynard Brothers
"I began a couple or three years ago to hear recordings that I categorized to my readers as "American rock" music. The recordings that loosely fit into this category were those that contained portions of numerous genres, including blues, folk, southern and classic rock, all melted into a most delightful casserole. This new style of music has been particularly gratifying to these old ears, which have managed somehow to survive boy bands, rap, and disco.
One of my favorite artists of this type are the New York based Maynard Brothers. With the release of their second CD "Nasty Packages", the lads have managed early in their career to do something that few other bands seem capable of accomplishing: they have managed to follow an excellent debut recording with an even better second effort. No sophomore jinx for the highly talented Maynards, as "Nasty Packages" artistically eclipses their self titled debut recording. It is, as was the first, a mixture of acoustic and electric rock and blues, all either partly or totally emanating from the pen of guitarist Erv Maynard, who is beginning to establish himself as one of the better song writers of this generation. Brother Jeff again adds both bass guitar and even better quality vocals than on their fine debut set. Drummer Harold Reiser returns along with new comer and long time friend Gary Bracjewski on second guitar to improve an already formidable line up.

The set begins with a "Peter Gunn" sounding intro, which gives way to the hard driving and very cleverly written "Don't Mind Livin' Alone". A jazzy "Some Days You Burn" is next, followed by an the acoustic title track which is absolutely haunting. Though lyrically a bit on the dark side, it is a tremendous showcase of both Erv's enormous talents as a writer and Jeff's splendid vocals. But it is the next track, a Texas rocking "Sad But True" that will probably get the most attention of most listeners. Songs like this one, the pulse pounding "Waitin' On A Bone", the slow blues burner "Leave Me With Something Baby", and the Hendrix like "Drifting Away" are going to help gain the Maynard Brothers many fans worldwide, including this reviewer, who finds their work among some of the very best available today."  Blues Connexion is a group from the south of France, member of the France Blues association, led by singer, guitarist and harmonist leader John "snake" Hillary (GB). Toby Lee - Icons, Vol.1 (2022)

                                                                      Toby Lee
Volume One is all about guitar legends, old and new, and how I could pay tribute to the guitarists who have inspired me over the years and shaped my playing style. Picking songs for this album from the back catalogue of all these great guitar players was always going to be challenging. Thinking long and hard about the song choice, I've done my best to find songs that have not only become iconic in both the artist's history and guitar playing history but that also resonate with me.

We have purposely stuck pretty close to the originals, well they were pretty perfect in the first place! But when it came to the solos, we went to town and had a lot of fun finding tones, picking suitable instruments for the songs and discovering what array of pedals sounded best in what configuration. We had a veritable feast of equipment to play with, so why not enjoy the process of finding out what works best!

Anyway, here you have it, Volume One of ICONS. I hope you have as much fun listening to this album as much as I did recording it. Enjoy!

Sleepwellers - Nothin' but a Number (2022)

                                                                  Sleepwellers
Sleepwellers is a rhythm & blues / blues band from southern Finland. The Sleepwellers founder Pasi Siltakorpi has had several bands playing different kinds of music but he has always dreamed of a band playing straight forward rhythm & blues and rock ’n’ roll. Pasi worked in Zambia during 2002-2003 and when he returned from Africa to Finland he felt that if he wants to make one of his dreams come true it was the time to do something about it.

Sleepwellers was founded in 2005 when Thomas Törnroos (dr), Risto Koskelainen (gtr, harmonica) Ari Siltakorpi (bs) and Pasi Siltakorpi (gtr, voc) had a jam session in Risto’s garage. They played Pasi’s long time favorite British Dr Feelgood songs and other rhythm & blues classics. It sounded so good that they thought maybe others would like to hear it too. They arranged a gig in a local legendary Bar Mary music club. Now they needed a name for the band. Thomas suggested Dr Sleep Well but as Pasi likes to play with the words they came up with the name Sleepwellers.

This first line up played solely cover music by Dr Feelgood and The Pirates including some rhythm & blues and rock ‘n’ roll classics. Risto quit the band 2007 and a new guitarist Markku Räty joinded the group. This was the time when Pasi had decided to add original material to Sleepwellers’ gig set. He has written music all his life and started to write new songs influenced by their long time pub rock favorites.

The Band wanted to make a record and they published their first CD Every Scar Tells a Story in 2008. This low budget album got encouraging reviews and songs were played on national radio. During the following years this line up recorded CDs Mother or a Dodo? and Check What You Get. Now it was drummer Thomas’s turn to leave the band. He is a very busy session drummer and he felt he didn’t have enough time to continue. Pasi’s old band mate Fokke Forsman was a natural addition to the band as Pasi and Fokke had played together in the 90’s in a popular show band called Zetor. Zetor released an album called Lihakenkä and two singles. On three occasions they performed on national TV and had a success in the Helsinki area.

The next Sleepwellers record was titled New Tricks for Old Bricks. It was published in October 2011. This time the band went to a top class Sea Wolf studio and they were lucky to have the legendary Havanna Black vocalist Hannu “Guts” Leiden to produce the album together with the band.

Year 2014 Sleepwellers realeased album ” Extended play”. This record contained eight very straight forwarded rhythm´n ´blues songs . This album is first Sleepweller cd that is streamed trough various services E.g. Spotify

Latest Sleepwellers record is titled ” Lei it happen ” . It was released just before Christmas 2017.This new record contains ten new songs and one remake. ” Maximising blue”. On this album special guest croatian bluesharpist Davor ”Buna ” Buncic appears on songs ” Home.lover and a cat ” and ” Maximising blue”.

New album ”Nothin´But a Number” released 9th March 2022. This album contains thirteen new Sleepwellers songs. Single ”Nomen est Omen” was first released on streaming services. The whole album is available on 1st April 2022.

The Mike Eldred Trio - Mike Eldred Trio (2002)

                                                            The Mike Eldred Trio
“It's not so much raw chutzpah as sheer love — backed by unassailable musical chops — with which veteran Southern California blues musician Mike Eldred puts on display in “61 and 49,” referencing the fabled intersection in Clarksdale, Miss., that's essentially ground zero in the world of Delta blues. What makes the album such a delight is the masterful way the guitarist, singer and songwriter paces his trek through a rainbow's worth of electric and acoustic blues workouts. It's the sign of a journeyman who has spent untold hours playing clubs and learning the old-fashioned way what flies and what doesn't”.

Craig Erickson - Modern Blues (2023)

                                                                  Craig Erickson
This is my 16th commercially released solo album and one of the most involved music projects I have recorded. I started writing songs for a new album, in my Midwest studio, just as the worldwide pandemic began in 2020.

I sent a couple of songs to legendary producer Mike Varney. He heard the potential and began
offering some advice and inspiration for the project. I previously recorded several records for Mike’s Shrapnel Records label. He had hooked me up with some of the best musicians in the world beginning in the 90s including the likes of Glenn Hughes and the "Badlands" rhythm section. We initially discussed traveling to a studio near him and working with some musicians to record the album. Those plans changed as the ongoing COVID situation continued to spread rapidly. So I decided to play all the instruments just as I have on several previous records. I continued to write a lot of songs that reflected what was going on in the world, as well as my personal life. It became almost a concept album type of theme of how weird the world was becoming… "Modern Blues" but with love and hope shining behind the clouds and through the tunnel.

Fortunately, I had the downtime to listen to the music that originally inspired me. I dug deep into my melting pot of influences including Hendrix, Robin Trower, Allman Bros., Frank Marino, ZZ Top, and unexpected flavors like The Who, The Stones, Bowie, Prince, and The Beatles. I even veered into fusion moments with some intense guitar soloing. It was starting to come together but I still needed a great drummer to take it up a notch and tie it all together. I called Jeff Sipe (Jimmy Herring, Susan Tedeschi, Shawn Lane) to add his funky creative groove power to the mix. He had played on my instrumental record "Cosmic Farm" on Shrapnel Records. His contribution improved this project by miles.
Be ready to dance, or just nod your head to the beat while cranking the tunes and cruising down the road! I hope the twelve tracks on "Modern Blues" will take you on a funky, rockin’ journey with interesting stories and exciting musical adventures and move way past heartbreak and into the land of harmony, peace, and love. Craig Erickson, January 2023

Something Inside Of Me (Unreleased Masters & Demos From The British Blues Years 1963-1976)

                                                           Something Inside Of Me
Something Inside Of Me unearths 96 previously unreleased recordings by 15 artists who were at the forefront of the burgeoning British blues scene from the early 1960s to the mid-1970s. the soul of the blues - from soloists (Bob Hall, Dave Kelly, Duster Bennett), duos (Simon and Steve, Graham Hine), trios (Boilerhouse, Dynaflow Blues Band) to jug band acts (Dave Peabody with the Vintage Jug Band) alongside from a variety of fully staffed rhythm & blues bands - from the Nighthawks, Shakey Vick's Big City Blues Band and D.J. Blues Band for Brett Marvin and the Thunderbolts and Jeff Curtis and the Flames. The title of the anthology comes from one of the tracks on Kirwan's Boilerhouse and sums up the sentiment that British blues artists as musicians have eagerly embraced for their own self-styled compositions, self-styled versions of black American images and lyrics - so mojos working, hellhounds, skin games, hoochie-coochie men and women, dealing with the devil and manly boys have been expertly reinterpreted. As Texas blues pianist Curtis Jones shouts to the Dynaflow Blues Band before joining him at the University of Bath—“Let's dance!” Gary von Tersch

Tommy Lee Cook - Mailbox Money (2012)

                                                                  Tommy Lee Cook
Here comes another good piece of work by singer, songwriter and guitarist Tommy Lee Cook Once Again Tommy has hit the nail with a selection of very determinant songs with a good dose of rhythm and hard rockin’ blues The music he plays is perfect to be performed on any roadhouse bar and the backing band, The Boys Of Buckingham, could not have been better chosen, because the complicity and good vibrations they all them show along the eleven songs included in the cd are really amazing The band musicians are Willie Miller and Clyde Jenkins on drums, Nathan Kamaner bass, Scott Kamener and Rex Bongo guitars, Terry Gable trumpet, Lanny Akowski sax and Harry Casano keyboards The result is a good and well displayed example of the personal Tommy Lee Cook’s musical style and his special way of approaching blues and Americana music.

Jerry Dugger - Live@Tesserete (2016)

                                                                   Jerry Dugger
Jerry Dugger is one of the best contemporary artists in New York soul blues realities: his musicianship goes beyond the importance of high-profile collaborations made throughout his career. Born in the Bronx and raised in Harlem, his introduction to music is the classic story of many bluesmen who, from an early age, lived in a family environment where their parents sang in church, at home and listened to a rich collection of 78 rpm records. He established himself artistically at the Dan Lynch Blues Bar, center and birthplace of the New York blues scene, where blues legends such as Johnny Copeland, James Cotton, Hubert Sumlin and Stevie Ray Vaughan, to name a few. His voice is reminiscent of Otis Redding and Sam Cooke, contaminated by the Neo-Soul that runs in the “Big Apple” today. An incredibly powerful voice, capable of expressing itself in any tonality and musical genre, which transmits unforgettable vibrations to those who hear it, and for this reason it was also praised by Dan Aykroyd on the CBS-Radio "House of Blues" program. He has recorded two CDs and with his bands Dugger Brothers and Harlem Blues Project plays regularly in the best clubs like the BBKing Blues Club in Times Square; since 1995 he has played with Andy J Forest on some of the most important tours in Europe and Canada, recording with him, in 1998, in Ottawa, the CD "Live at the Rainbow".
