 Featuring Michael Barclay: Guitar; Vocals This album as been a favorite of the blues band fans since it's release. The band is one of Northern California's most talented and experienced blues outfits. Michael's arrangements and compositions, as well as choices of blues standards, has always been a cut above. Check out Louise, an old Howlin' Wolf tune. The band has recently released both 'Black & White' (this spring) and Blue Eyed Blues (2007) which are also available at CDBaby. He produced the most recent recordings of the late Pattie Santos (It's a Beautiful Day). Michael was a featured performer at: The Russian River Blues Festival; The Sonoma County Blues Festival in 1998 and 2006. The band was featured with Disney superstar, Myra, at First Night Santa Rosa. Recently, Michael signed a contract and completed the production of a blues themes album for The Hollywood Edge, a TV and cinema music library. And more recently contracted with Platinum Music in England for a few more tunes. Michael has shared The Bill With: Robben Ford; Delbert McClinton; Roy Rogers; Joe Louis Walker; John Mayall; Roy Buchanan; Nick Gravenites; Mark Naftalin; Etta James; Ronnie Earl; Elvin Bishop; Coco Montoya; James Armstrong; Johnnie Johnson; and Norton Buffalo.

 Brandon Miller isn’t the typical product of the small, Midwest town of Gardner, KS.  From beginning to play at the age of 7, Miller always knew it was going to music that would be his driving force in life.

“I’ve always wanted to play guitar, but seeing bands like Rush, Aerosmith and KISS up close gave me the thought of ‘the sky is the limit.’ I saw Kenny Wayne Shepherd when I was 17 and really saw that people wanted to watch him play guitar. That’s exactly what I wanted to do. The guitar is a special instrument that connects with people. I want to connect with people through my guitar playing.”

Throughout his years of studying music formally, educationally, and experimentally through high school and into college, Miller also had a desire to write original music.

“The song always comes first. That gives you the connection with the listener. You can take the journey together.  With my music, I want it to give people the opportunity to relate someway. Whether that’s through pain, sorrow, anger or happiness, it gives them a way to release their emotions.  We can succeed and fail together.”

With musical influences such as Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Warren Haynes and Joe Bonamassa, he says “they are all extremely talented at their instrument, Warren and Clapton are incredible songwriters.”

Miller truly holds his own candle among the few able to truly speak through his instrument and is impossible to be stylistically confined to Rock, Country, Roots, Americana.

“Living in the moment and connecting with the audience. If you can’t connect with the audience at a show, what’s the point in having a show? You have to be able to take them to a place to forget about what is happening in their life.  I want them to hear great songs and walk away from a great guitar show.”

 Jeff Liberty earned his blues chops on the sidewalks New Orleans' French Quarter, the back streets of St. Louis, and Beale Street in Memphis.

Since 1988, Liberty's scorching guitar and smoky voice have led him down 47 miles of barbed wire, treading paths first blazed by Freddy King, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, and The Doors, delighting fans, gaining the respect of veteran blues performers, and wowing critics.

Landing in Columbia, South Carolina in 2000, Liberty immediately blew the doors off of the local music scene and was voted "Best Local Solo Artist" in Columbia's Free Times Reader's Poll. A year later he formed the Jeff Liberty Band and was named "Best New Local Band" and "Best Local Blues Band" by Free Times readers in 2001.

 The Bruce Marshall Group was formed in 1991 and originally had an 8-piece lineup. Their first CD, “Love of the Ride”, was released in ‘92 and featured 10 new originals, including the song performed by the Toy Caldwell Band, and the ASCAP songwriter award winning “If Dreams Were Money”. Their second CD, “Sneak Preview Volume 2, was released in ‘97 and featured 10 new tracks with a five piece unit. “Kalispell”, was released in 2003 includes 14 songs, 11 new Bruce Marshall originals and covers by Tyrone Davis, Toy Caldwell and Chris Rhodes. The CD boasts world-class songs and amazing performances and production. Their newest release is entitled “Misspent Youth” and came out to rave reviews in 2010. The single “Three Chords and the Truth” features duo partner James Montgomery on harp and is receiving extensive airplay. These 12 classic Bruce Marshall tracks are among his best efforts to date and showcase the band’s musicianship, arranging and production. You won’t find any filler on this record and the new release pushes the band to new heights.

The Bruce Marshall Group live show treats their fans to a soaring ride as they rip through a catalog of original material that truly sets this band apart. They love to mix it up, whether it’s pulling off exciting jams that build with dynamics and layering, or playing the concise arrangements of their songs with discipline and taste. The sound defies categorization, slipping seamlessly around touches of Blues, R&B, Rock and Southern Boogie. The interplay between Bruce and longtime guitarist Dave Cournoyer is the heart and soul of their performances and they always deliver. The songs are mostly upbeat, but even those dealing with love lost and missed opportunities, carry an underlying sense of hope and optimism. The band continues to work tirelessly and must be experienced live to be fully appreciated.

The Jimmy Zee Band - What You See Is What You Get (2017)

 Canadian Jimmy Zee has released 6 albums over his 25 plus year music career.  Sporting a unique gravelly voice that some might find hard to digest, his bio would probably agree with the listener.  “Zee’s vocals approximate a cross between Joe Cocker after a carton of Lucky Strikes and Robbie Robertson’s latter spoken style.”  I must say they are interesting.  All the songs here were penned by Jimmy Zee.

The album features many fine Candian musicians.  Zee and Nadine States sing lead here and Rob MacDonald and Tim Porter are on guitar.  Miles Hill does duty on bass, Joel Fountain is on drums, and Darryl Havers is on keyboards.  Harpdog Brwon does the harp work and Steve Hillman is on sax.  A few guests also add their touches here and there.

The title tracks get things started.  The title of the song has the requisite capitalization of the words and lacks a period; the album title is a sentence. A nice, bouncy tune with acoustic guitar and some slide which gets the listener their first hint of Zee’s growling and gruff vocals and Annabelle Cvostek backing him.  It begins to grow on you after a few listens- it’s unique for sure.  The baritone sax adds a cool backing to the track and the harp is a nice addition.  Swampy harp and dobro on “Backroads” are fun.  Zee and Rick Threat are featured on vocals.  Threat is 180 out from Zee, offering a bit of a contrast.  Nadine States joins us with some chants on the driving and big sounding “I Ride Alone.”  Huge electric guitar, harp and an overall big-time groove make this one interesting. States joins on backing vocals for “Time Will Heal Everything.”  A slower paced cut, the songs is probably as close to a ballad as Zee can get.  A down home country blues with a stinging electric guitar solo is what we have and it’s good.  “Money” is next, with sweet guitar by Porter and more bari sax by Hillman to give us a good ride.

“My Old Lady is a Freakshow” compares his woman wit an old Detroit automobile.  That being said, the song is pretty cool.  A jumping and uptempo beat and howling vocals on top of the guitar and harp make this cool.  Things cool off with “Blind.”  Dobro and harp make this sound kind of front porch, but Zee states he wrote this while driving to China with a non-English speaking guy  who kept a great beat on the dashboard.  No matter, it’s a nicely done piece. The craziness of the feminine mystique is the topic of “She’s a Mystery to Me.” The harp and vocals drive together as the mid tempo beat throbs and we get a nice little guitar solo to boot. “Your the Best It Can Get” features Terry Townson on trumpet.  Written in part during an airplane delay at Toronto airport, Zee’s beat and pacing express a little frustration.  Zee concludes with “I’m No Good Without You.” MacDonald’s dobro sold Zee on making the acoustic version of the cut be the one and it is pretty.  The electric guitar slide solo also makes a nice little contrast, too.

The vocals are rough.  They might not please purists.  If you like rough hewn vocals with an edge then this will probably please you.  The songs are really good and the band is great, too.  Jimmy Zee is an interesting character and if you want something a little off the beaten path then take a chance with this one!  I enjoyed it.

Charlie A'Court & Witchitaw - When Country Gets The Blues (2021)

 Powerhouse blues artist Charlie A’Court and outlaw country rockers Witchitaw, have joined forces to create an exciting new show called, “When Country Gets The Blues”. Together, these well-known East Coast artists are set to embark on a theatre tour that will make stops in all three Maritime provinces this fall. To celebrate the tour, A’Court and Witchitaw have recorded a brand new live album.

Separately, each act is known for their entertaining live shows and commitment to their respective genre. A’Court is a 5-time East Coast Music Award Winner, known for delivering his brand of blues and soul. Witchitaw is described as true-blue outlaw troubadours, complete with country heartache and southern-fried rhythms. Combined, Witchitaw and A’Court bridge the gap by paying homage to the legends of country and blues, as well as showcasing their own original material. Think Willie Nelson and Ray Charles, Waylon Jennings and Muddy Waters, Witchitaw and Charlie A’Court.

“I remember Jason Spinney from Witchitaw coming up to me at a music conference with this idea on a collaboration, ” recalls A’Court. He remembers, “Jason was excited about bringing the two genres together that blurred the lines and I was interested in exploring the idea.”

Front man Jason Spinney of Witchitaw explains, “We had seen Charlie perform at an awards show and I thought to myself, man I bet that guy could sing the hell out of a country song!”

When Country Gets The Blues was originally set to tour in 2020 but the show had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The extra time allowed the quarantined collaborators to produce a live album of their debut performance at the 2019 Cavendish Beach Music Festival. The live album features ten tracks illustrating the special connection these two artists share on stage. A fired-up Cavendish crowd was treated to hits from Witchitaw and A’Court, including gems from John Fogerty, Vince Gill and B.B. King. The live album is set for release on Tuesday, September 21.

 Shrimp City Slim, whose real name is Gary Erwin, was born in Chicago, IL, in 1953. He learned to play piano as a teenager, and soon found himself drawn to the blues. He played in several blues combos in the Chicago region before moving to Charleston, SC, in 1983, where he set up his own record label, Erwin Music. He has released seven albums of what he calls "lowcountry blues" -- a mix of Carolina coast blues, soul, and R&B -- on Erwin, including Gone with the Wind (1992), Blues on the Beach (1994), Blue Palmetto (1996), I Work Nights (2000), Ancestor Worship (2000), and Highway 17 (2003). In recent years Slim has also worked as a radio DJ on shows specializing in blues and other southeastern musical forms.

 Eric Rice is known in the Northwest blues and rock scene playing live on many stages. Opening for many national blues and rock artists over the years and taking his act to festivals, Eric has the experience and confidence to deliver a successful show. His guitar attack and the stories he tells with conviction and wisdom are as honest as the voice he uses to convey his message. The possession of songs written by his influences is incredible. Eric can take a song we've loved for a lifetime and breathe in his own life experiences to breathe new life into a classical song. Along with the best musicians the Seattle music scene has to offer, your show will always have a quality that's hard to beat. The partnership with Scotty Harris on bass and Andrew Cloutier on drums is a language that has developed over all the years they spent together. Improvisation is easy with these 3 as time together makes the musical conversations between them only found in the moment. The Devil's Nursery album is packed with the groove and wit you'd expect to hear from Eric. The story now continues with our latest album "Stuck Inside". The art was done by Joel Astley and Wendy Rice. Joel also contributed his harmonica talents along with Jesse Weston on piano and Justin Kasel-Hayes on guitar. Written and produced during the pandemic the title cut gives us a view of the shutdown from an optimistic view. It's a funny story about remodeling the house and having a "private" party at home. Other thought-provoking stories like "Big Talker" express the distaste for the political circus and threats to our democracy at the end of the last decade, while "Girl Needs to be Told" is a love story about treating people with love and dignity.  Known for his work with Jefferson Starship on their biggest hit ("We Built This City"), frontman Mickey Thomas gives the blues a chance through this joint recording with the Bluesmasters. Doug Lynn'A harmonica played excels on the shocking Chicago blues standard of Muddy Waters' "Rock Me Baby", Tim Tucker descends on slide guitar to Robert Johnson's famous evergreen "Walkin' Blues" and slow, eight-minute "Third" Degree". while Magic Slim guests during Waters' lesser-known song "Can't Get No Grindin" and the odd selection of Phil Collins' joint song "Get Your Business Straight". Thomas himself is in good shape and company, more comfortable in the confines of Chris Kenner's New Orleans rock/pop and Dave Bartholomew's "Sick & Tired," but overall, he's competent at singing the blues he's clearly always loved. The ace in the hole for this date is legendary drummer Aynsley Dunbar, heard throughout the date establishing his reliable and completely professional beats. Whether a follow-up recording or tour is on offer doesn't lessen this meeting of minds, as Mickey Thomas seeks acceptance on another level beyond flamboyant stadium rock, geared in a more soulful direction.
