Big Will & the Bluesmen - Hard Times (2011)
Big Will & the Bluesmen
And yet another Dutch solo album that is rock solid. Wonderful Chicago and Mississippi Delta blues with eleven original compositions, four of which are acoustic. The band is also supported by no less important: Peter Struijk (various guitars), Henk Heijlema (lap steel and mandolin) and Gerbrand Schoenmaker (piano). For starters, Alex's voice (Neal Black would be jealous), could only have come from liters of whiskey and sandpaper, fits perfectly with the band's style and is not boring at all, wonderful. Within the good styles varied songs, like Delta Swamp's song 'Leave it all behind' or country blues fingerpicking the music of Laura (instrumental) and Honky Tonk in 'Big Will Theme' (instrumental) to finish with 'Release my soul' with minimal instrumental support, which gives you goosebumps. Big Will's harp is central to the song and I would keep it that way, indispensable. Rhythm section, Henk Wessels playing very strong bass and Jos 'Shuffle King' Waal on drums, of which you can say the drums are there, where I can clap my hands from time to time, Jos always knows himself in service set the band, very strong. This album is sure to be released soon in 'an hour of NiX' and can still be found regularly on the player at home and in the car. In what small country can it become big again!
