Snooky Pryor - Mojo Ramble (2003)

 Pryor's blues developed during a stint with the army, when stationed near Chicago, jamming with the likes of Sonny Boy Williamson and Homesick James and playing on Maxwell Street. 1945 saw his musical career begin in earnest and In 1948 he made his recording debut with "Telephone Blues", now considered one of the postwar Chicago blues classics.

He recorded intermittently throughout the 1950s and was also highly in demand as a session musician, playing on sides with Sunnyland Slim, Floyd Jones, Homesick James, and others of the "Maxwell Street School".

Snooky withdrew from the music scene for much of the 1960s and 1970s, but started playing and performing regularly in the 1980s.

Gov't Mule - Savanah's Ludlow, VT (1995)

 Gov’t Mule (read "Government Mule") is a southern rock / jam band formed in 1994 by guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody, of the Allmann Brothers Band, who joined drummer Matt Abts. The initial idea was just a side project to the Allman Brothers that would revive the famous power-trios of the 60s and 70s. The band's first performance took place in May 1994 at The Palamino, Hollywood, with a repertoire that mixed their own compositions with some covers that gained a totally different look, a characteristic that the band still preserves today. Another characteristic of Gov’t Mule is practically not to repeat the sets of the shows, always presenting something new. Maybe that's why they allow their shows to be recorded and still reserve a space on their official website for fans to exchange these recordings.

Early Times and the High Rollers - The Corner (2021)

 Sacramento raised Early Times is a blues guitarist who started playing professionally when he was sixteen. He formed his first band in 1990 and released his debut “Society for the Misunderstood”. His follow-up recordings include 1993’s “Hobo-Deluxe; and 1995’s “The Comedown”. He formed a blues jazz trio with Johnny Heartsman and Jimmy Robinson, and on occasion the legendary Jimmy Smith would sit in on organ. In 1997 Early Times was chosen Sacramento’s Best Guitarist winning a Critics’ Choice Award. He toured with vocalist E.C. Scott and plays guitar on her 1998 album “Hard Act to Follow”. In 2001 he helped launch Sirius Satellite Radio and hosted a daily show for seven years. Early Times formed the High Rollers in 2003 and released the album “New York City”; and followed up with 2007’s “Moonshine Serenade”. He reunited with E.C. Scott and again toured with her in 2010 and 2011. In 2016 he was asked to return to SiriusXM and renew his daily show on B.B. King’s Bluesville. His last recording was 2017’s “Hit & Run”.

The current line-up for the High Rollers includes Early Times, guitar, keyboards, percussion and vocals; Dan Schnapp, keyboards; Hardan Long-Johnson, bass; and Joshua Keitt, drums. Special guests include Popa Chubby; producer and percussionist Jay Messina. and backing vocalist Colleen Messina.

All songs were written by the street poet Early Times. On “Come On Let’s Ride” Early Times describes the corner “uptown, East side”.  The fabulous title track, “On The Corner”, continues to define the gritty urban landscape of lonely souls, “people running round, trying to get their kicks on the corner”.

Early Times is also a commanding vocalist. He plays an acoustic guitar on “Do What She Do” and sings “here comes Mary in a cha-cha hat, her mama says she’s going straight to hell wearing that, Mary don’t care she don’t worry about that, she’s gonna do what she do, what she do.” “She’s About To Lose Her Mind” features guitarist Popa Chubby with a stinging lead and extended solo.

Early Times is especially rockin’ on the instrumental “Rosie’s Herbs N’ Ting”. A great songwriter, he gets funky on “He’s Got A Jones”, “if you can’t stand the heat, you gotta stay out of the kitchen”. “Say, man” is a jazzier piece, a wonderful interlude, with a hip narrative and some great percussion from Messina.

On “Charlemagne” Early Times sings “well Charlemagne, girl tell me who does your hair, ‘cause it gives you that devil macabre, a certain kind of flair”. Early Times switches back to an acoustic on the folksy “Someone Help Mary’ or she ain’t long for this place”. He closes with the rockin’, Willie Nile styled, “Return of the Queen”.

Often when listening to Bluesville I’ve wondered who is this guy who calls himself “Early Times”? He is a great guitarist, vocalist and storyteller with songs that come to life with characters like Uptown Charlie, Tijuana Madonna, and Cha, Cha Mary.  He has created a film-noir type album that will not be forgotten. A bonafide hit.

Livin' Blues - Bamboozle (1972)

 Livin Blues and Cuby + the Blizzards were the best Dutch blues bands of the late 60s and early 70s. Bamboozle is amongst Livin Blues best albums and were they have a more grown-up sound. The singer really stands out with his husky voice and the harmonica player is a real lust. L.B. Boogie is a real classic and easily stands in the shadow of John Mayall's Room to Move. It's a perfect CD to have on the road late at night and play full blast.

Byther Smith - Gritty Soul (1986)

 Strictly judging from the lyrical sentiment of his recordings, it might be wise not to make Chicago guitarist Byther Smith angry. Smitty's uncompromising songs are filled with threats of violence and ominous menace (the way blues used to be before the age of political correctness), sometimes to the point where his words don't even rhyme. They don't have to, either -- you're transfixed by the sheer intensity of his music. Smitty came to Chicago during the mid-'50s after spending time toiling on an Arizona cattle ranch. He picked up guitar tips from J.B. Lenoir (his first cousin), Robert Jr. Lockwood, and Hubert Sumlin, then began playing in the clubs during the early '60s. Theresa's Lounge was his main haunt for five years as he backed Junior Wells; he also played with the likes of Big Mama Thornton, George "Harmonica" Smith, and Otis Rush.

HousefireA couple of acclaimed singles for C.J. (the two-part "Give Me My White Robe") and BeBe ("Money Tree"/"So Unhappy") spread his name among aficionados, as did a 1983 album for Grits, Tell Me How You Like It. The rest of the country then began to appreciate Smitty, thanks to a pair of extremely solid albums on Bullseye Blues: 1991's Housefire (first out on Grits back in 1985) and I'm a Mad Man two years later. With two sets on Delmark and a stepped-up touring itinerary, Smitty really hit his stride. He continued with strong performances and recordings during the new millennium, issuing two albums on Black & Tan, 2001’s Smitty’s Blues and 2004’s Throw Away the Book; returning to Delmark for 2008’s Blues on the Moon: Live at the Natural Rhythm Social Club; and issuing Got No Place to Go on Fedora, also in 2008.

Johnny Winter - Let Me In (1991)

 Let Me In is a star-studded all-blues set from Johnny Winter, featuring cameos from Dr. John, Albert Collins, and several others. Though the set focuses on blues material, Winters can never leave his rock roots behind -- the sheer volume and pile-driving energy of his performances ensures that. For most of the record, his enthusiasm is contagious, but there are a couple of bland, generic exercises that fail to work up a head of steam. But there is a lovely acoustic number called "Blue Mood," which shows Winter trying to stretch a bit by playing jazzy licks. It's a refreshing change of pace.

Jimi Jeff & The Gypsy Band - Live (2010)

 Jeffery Leon Robinson was born in Kentucky back in the mid-1950s knowing from a young age that music was his calling. All these years later, we here in Humboldt know him by a different name: Jimi-Jeff.

Known locally for rocking that old-school funk, blues, R&B and rock, Jimi-Jeff and his Gypsy Band have been rocking everything from Jimi Hendrix to Prince.

“We were poor growing up,” Robinson said. “I was the youngest of five (siblings) with a single mom.”

Robinson’s mother always worked hard and taught him and his siblings to be strong and independent.

“For a long time she really wanted me to be more like my older brothers and get a good job and maybe have music as a hobby, which didn’t work for me,” Robinson said. “Although today and for the last 24 years she’s been happy with my choice.”

While a pre-teen, he picked up bass guitar from a gospel player who played at his mother’s church. Then, when he was 14, he heard his first Jimi Hendrix album — the pivotal moment when he knew he wanted to be a great guitarist.

“Hendrix inspired me with the sounds that he was making,” he said. “I never saw him live, but I fell in love with what I heard.”

After that, the guitarist remembers the first full song he learned.

“Besides gospel stuff, and I don’t remember much from then, my first song on guitar was ‘Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay’ by Otis Redding,” he said.

For the most part a self-taught guitarist, Robinson knew that in order to get work back then as a black musician he’d have to learn funk, R&B and blues — so he did. By the time he was in his mid-20s, he was on tour in Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee.

“Back then I played with Lucky Scott, the bass player for Curtis Mayfield on his ‘Superfly’ album,” Robinson said. “Today, looking back, I love the fact that I actually played the Chitlin’ Circuit (a string of Southern performance venues that were safe and acceptable for African-American performers) and was well liked. While doing it, I didn’t even know I was playing the Chitlin’ Circuit — I don’t even think it was even called the Chitlin’ Circuit then, not to my knowledge anyway.”

By the mid-1980s, after Robinson had performed practically all over the South, he headed up to Chicago to tap their famed circuit. That was when he had the opportunity to play with folks like Buddy Guy and Junior Wells and really anybody who needed a guitarist.

“Honestly, when I played with Buddy Guy and Junior Wells I didn’t know who anyone was,” Robinson said. “My first gig in Chicago was with Phil Guy (Buddy’s brother) and the very next day I was playing with Junior Wells at the Checkerboard Lounge.”

In Chicago, the standout musician just took the calls as they came in for gigs. And the calls came from Koko Taylor, Buddy Guy, Lefty Diz, Lee Shout Williams, James Cotton and others.

“At the time I really did not know who these people were,” Robinson recalled. “It was later on that I realized I had played with some of the best bluesmen in the business and walked away on my own in search of my own dream. But, man, I’ve got to tell you, there was so much power on those stages back then. You could just feel the vibe. Some of the best times of my life.”

When the old-school rocker decided to leave Chicago, he chose to move to Minneapolis, Minn. where he started his first group, The Jeff Robbins Blues Band. In Minnesota his skills eventually caught the attention of Buzzy Linheart (who played vibraphone on the Jimi Hendrix record ‘Cry of Love’). That was when Linheart talked Robinson into a trip to Seattle to meet Hendrix’ father, Al.

“I did my very first tribute to Hendrix at the Cotton Club in Seattle and Al came,” Robinson said. “And he cried. It was one of those things that I wanted to do, meet Al. His girlfriend became my manager and I moved in at the Hendrix house.”

Jimi-Jeff even has videos of he and Al Hendrix together. It was also in Seattle where Robinson met Warlock (Brian Mills, also known as Bigelow Culpepper), a musician who passed away in April 2011. He said he considered Warlock his musical soul mate.

“For 22 years Warlock and I worked together more on than off,” Robinson said. “I’ll always miss him.”

It was finally in Seattle where the musician would be dubbed Jimi-Jeff. He and his band eventually moved up to Vancouver and re-formed themselves as Jimi-Jeff & The Gypsy Band.

“That was the first time I had a manager, a photographer, booking agents and stuff like that,” he said. “But every story has an ending. At the time I had a bad drug habit.”

Eventually, Robinson decided to kick the drugs and move to the North Coast.

“I moved to Humboldt County in the spring of 1997,” he said. “I was married to a woman from Eureka and her youngest daughter came down with leukemia. She was hospitalized at UCSF, so we moved here where her family lived for support. It didn’t work out, but it introduced me to Humboldt County — which I knew in the beginning would be my last home. I love the people here, the music scene here is off the hook, and I really think I’ve found my place here.”

These days, Robinson rocks shows all over Humboldt and frequently. If one were to drop in and see him they might hear him doing his favorite cover, “Machine Gun” by Jimi Hendrix or his most-requested original, a blues number called “Anie Mae.” His Gypsy Band includes Robinson on guitar and vocals, Tim Klassen on bass and Robert “Wes” Conley on drums.

Quique Gomez & Luca Giordano - Chicago '3011 Studio' Sessions (2013)

 After several years of collaborations and tours around the world toghether, also backing up many Chicago Blues Legends in United States and Europe, ace Italian guitarist Luca Giordano and outstanding Spanish charismatic harp player and singer Quique Gomez present their recorded tribute to classic Chicago blues,  Chicago 3011 Studios Sessions. The album was recorded on 2011 in the Windy City and produced by GG Records late last year.The two Europeans, who met each other for the first time  in Chicago, share a common passion for “old school” electric blues and the genre’s many past and present masters.

As versatile musicians fond of performing in various musical styles, both Giordano and Gomez front their own bands and projects. But together onstage or in the studio, their deep and genuine passion for Chicago Blues roars to the fore.Chicago 3011 Studios Sessions is a 12-song CD, consisting of six originals played by the core band and six freshened-up classics with guests varying from track to track  plus a bonus track with all the special guests together.
After touring with these two young bluesmen all around Europe, backed up by their excellent band, several Chicago blues “living legends” were happy to support their friends Giordano and  Gomez on the session.  Bob Stroger  appears on “Bad Boy,”  Jimmy Burns contributes to “That’s Life,” Billy Branch plays  on “Rocket 88” and not least  Eddie C. Campbell turns up on “Eddie’s Shuffle.” The two Europeans lovingly dedicated the album to Mr. Campbell..Of course, the Chicago blues elders made visitors Giordano and Gomez feel and sound right at home, that is, Home Sweet Chicago.

Brian Leneschmidt - Stepping Out (2012)

 Brian Leneschmidt has played as a full-time musician solo and with bands for twenty years. He has recorded six full length albums and has achieved national radio support as well as other countries such as Argentina, France, India and many more.  The CD, "Passing By," was released in 2009 and is an acoustic album of eleven songs. “Stepping Out,” is a 2012 release of electric blues-rock originals. He was recently the featured artist of the week on Music Tampa Bay.

Over the years Brian’s bands have played at events such as “Hawg Fest” at Red Rocks Amphitheater featuring Lynyrd Skynyrd, have opened for bands such as the Atlanta Rhythm Section, Molly Hatchet, Charlie Musselwhite, Curtis Salgado, Lukas Nelson, Tinsley Ellis and Shemekia Copeland. Earlier he was showcased in Salt Lake City, Utah for the Australian media the closing night of the 2002 Winter Olympics. Other highlights include shows in Sturgis SD bike week, Molenbeersel, Belgium, Blues Festival performances, Jannus Live in St. Petersburg, Skippers Smokehouse in Tampa, Hard Rock Cafe Miami, and the House of Blues in New Orleans and Orlando.

The Brian Leneschmidt Band is a Tampa Bay Blues-Rock band mixing Blues, Rock and Funk.  They perform high energy shows as a trio or a four or five piece throughout the Bay area and beyond. The band formed in August of 2012, not long after Brian moved to St. Petersburg, FL. After two years of playing shows and gaining fans they expanded the line up with appearances from vocal powerhouse Karyn Denham, and Thomas Mignella on Sax building even more of a presence in the region.

With Brian (Guitar, Vocals) Jason Lewis (Bass) Dave Dube (Drums) and Tom Mignella (Sax) the band is a fun and dynamic act with a real passion for music. Shows feature original music and covers with their own twist, a must see!

The band released their new album "High Water Rising" with Karyn in the fall of 2016.

Rick Gauthier - Feeling of the Blues (2010)

 Rick Gauthier is a rocker and blues player singing with his heart the music he likes most. Rick's musical training began at the age of ten, singing in a choir of symphonic boys and later learning to play guitar, bass and a little keyboard. Since that humble beginning, about thirty years ago, Rick has performed as a frontman and composer in several bands. These groups performed original music and / or covered the top 40 songs, classic rock, hard rock, rock, country, blues and rhythm and blues.

Johnny Copeland - Copeland Special (1981)

 Along with his friend Albert Collins, Johnny Copeland was the most celebrated Texas bluesman of his generation. His huge, soul-drenched voice and intense guitar made him instantly distinctive. After decades of struggling as a journeyman blues and R&B player in Houston and New York, cutting dozens of singles and receiving some radio play, he burst on the international blues scene with his album Copeland Special. From that point on, he never looked back, touring ceaselessly around the world until his death in July 1997.

Johnny Copeland was born March 27, 1937, in Haynesville, LA. The son of sharecroppers, his father died when he was very young, and Copeland was given his father's guitar. Moving to Houston, he first gained attention as a vocalist with his friend Joe "Guitar" Hughes. Unlike the dry, slightly urbane vocal style of the Texas guitar heroes T-Bone Walker and Gatemouth Brown, Johnny brought a gospel intensity and tough growl to his singing. His big voice could be heard over the horn-driven Houston bands. Copeland and Hughes formed a band called The Dukes of Rhythm, which became the house band at the Shady's Playhouse, one of Houston’s leading blues clubs.

Johnny’s early recording career embraced blues, soul and rock ‘n’ roll. He cut singles for Mercury, All Boy and Golden Eagle, among others. His first single was “Rock ‘n’ Roll Lily,” and he later cut regional successes like “Please Let Me Know” and “Down On Bending Knees.” For the most part, his singles featured Johnny as a vocalist more than as a guitar player.

Frustrated with the disco boom and the number of clubs replacing live bands with DJs, Johnny moved to Harlem in 1974, playing local clubs and house parties. He took a day job while continuing to play at night. But it was in New York that his break finally came. He was “discovered” by a pair of producers who took him into the studio, focusing on Johnny’s blues talents and teaming him with a horn section that included a number of famous jazz players. The album, entitled Copeland Special, released on Rounder, introduced Johnny to the white blues audience and created a small sensation in the blues world. He hit the road, playing blues and rock clubs nationally and across Europe. Johnny brought endless energy to his live shows, and proved to be a charismatic front man as well as an excellent songwriter.

Copeland recorded seven albums for Rounder Records, beginning in 1981, including one recorded during a tour of Africa. His appearance on Alligator’s Showdown! album, the classic recording that he made with his friends Albert Collins and Robert Cray, won Johnny a Grammy. His later albums on Polygram/Verve/Gitanes Blues continued his series of quality recordings.

Johnny was diagnosed with heart disease in 1994. A series of surgeries slowed his touring down considerably. In 1997, he was fitted with an experimental heart pump and was able to resume touring. He brought his teenage daughter Shemekia on the road with him to open his shows; it was the beginning of her climb to blues stardom.

After surviving much longer than predicted with the experimental pump, Johnny received his long-awaited heart transplant. However, the transplant was not a success, and Johnny died on July 3, 1997. He left behind a proud legacy of some of the hardest-edged Texas blues recorded in the ‘80s and ‘90s, hundreds of high-energy live shows and, with his daughter Shemekia, a musical force carrying on into the future.
