Damon Fowler - Barnyard Smile (2024)
Damon Fowler
BARNYARD SMILE from veteran bluesman Damon Fowler, is his third release for Landslide Records. A masterful singer, guitarist and songwriter, Fowlers latest brings forth a handful of soul driven originals, plus innovative Bo Diddley and Jerry Reed covers and a touch of Americana craftmanship. BARNYARD SMILE marks Fowler's 9th solo release. With all the elements of a classic American record, it shows off Damon's unique fret work, heartfelt vocals and vivid songwriting to the max. Coupled with his experiences as a sideman guitarist with Butch Trucks Freight Train band and the Dickey Betts Band, he has garnered strong acclaim from critics who have compared his fretwork to Johnny Winter and Jeff Beck, and his slide guitar prowess to the late Duane Allman.

Jerry Forney - No Exit (2019)
Jerry Forney
A classic Gibson Lucile with a custom guitar strap reading ‘Jerry Forney' fits the man as naturally as his full black outfit and bowler hat. Jerry Forney is the real deal: an authentic bluesman, a pedal steel legend, a treasure to St. Joseph, a ‘sultan of swing, yeah he knows all chords', and he's a bit of a character too.
He has such a warm guitar sound where notes seem to bubble out of his amplifier sustained by a secret delay. Every note is chosen with tender consideration in a luxurious leather-tone, thumbed in classy Wes Montgomery octaves, or triple-stopped with masterful combined use of fingering and guitar pick. I find Forney to be one of the most tasteful players around: comping colorful and clever chord voicings with mature melodic music-making during solo sections..
Jerry's Sunday blues show at the Ground Round on Belt and Fredrick has been consistently good for longer than I know, and last Sunday was exceptionally solid. The band usually includes Doug Ward on 5 string bass, and Wilbur on drums with Chili on the mouth-harp, and the evening could also bring in special guests. The musicians are incredible, and the sound doesn't overwhelm the space (though' they did get louder with a new PA).
Chris Moore (drummer for Charlie and the Stingrays) and Mike Huffer (piano extraordinaire and fearless bassist, wielding a seafoam longhorn Danelectro) joined Jerry for Leon Russell's Masquerade . The smooth R&B tune was intricate and beautiful; morphing into funk, it was one of the evening's highlights - nice harmonica solo, Chili.
Forney truly has fun when he performs, it is entertaining to catch his grins, and the tight shuffles grooves incite dancing in the little space the Ground Round provides. I was surprised to hear a reggae tune and Forney's playful use of feedback: even happening upon a major7th that rang out at the end of a tune. The show brought out some true blues tunes, folk-country ballads, and smooth grooves, early rock hits, and infectious shuffles.
With his latest release, "No Exit," Jerry Forney, imparts a deep bluesy style. In this CD, his 10th to date, Forney, once a backup guitarist for Charlie Rich and Townes Van Zandt, showcases his talents with a mixture of ballads, Americana and blues. The melodies of Black Night and El Diablo are transcending.

Texas Scratch - Texas Scratch (2023)
Texas Scratch
Texas Scratch, the legendary unreleased but long-awaited blues album featuring two iconic Texan guitarists and their friends, finally gets its due after 13 years. The musicians got together over a decade ago in New Jersey to jam and record each other’s tracks at the legendary Showplace Studios. Each artist had never performed the other’s original tunes before, so they had to learn their parts in record time. There was literally little to no time to rehearse, as each artist and studio had other commitments to take care of. The end result was an album of killer guitar and modern blues music.

Southside Denny - Heal It (2024)
Southside Denny
Born and raised in South Bend, Indiana, Southside Denny is an American born Chicago style bluesrocker and acoustic blues guitar soloist with twelve albums to his credit. He began growing his reputation in the early 1980's being often associated with and seen regularly on stage with many of his Chicago musical heroes and influences such as Luther Allison, Sugar Blue, and Pinetop Perkins. Denny performed as opening act for these and many other stellar acts such as Ray Charles, Lonnie Mack, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins and what resembles a who's who list of Chicago blues acts. He has answered the call to share the stage with many legendary rockers such as John Fogerty, Edgar Winter, BTO and Styxx.
In 1984 he and his band, Southside Denny and the Skintones, scored a regional hit with a protest song called 'Ethanol Stinks'. Before disbanding in 1989 the trio recorded two albums, including one with Sugar Blue on harp. They also played blues club circuits throughout several Midwestern states and into the Canadian provinces of Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta.
In the 1990's he had earned a regular spot at the prestigious Buddy Guy's Legends in Chicago. During that time, Denny's music was referred to as sounding somewhere between Buddy Guy and Johnny Winter. His style is now one of his own, concocted of rapid-fire melodic, soulful playing and lots of open-tuning-slide guitar. His talents as both a guitarist and singer are recognized by fans and fellow musicians alike.
In 1999 Denny was chosen as the 2nd recipient of the Ole Harv Award for lifetime promotion of blues music in the Michiana area. A year later he represented his home state of Indiana in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis and captured third place at the Montréal Grand Prix de la Guitare. He has performed at the International festival du Jazz du Montréal, International Festival du blues de Mont Tremblant, Trois Rivières en Blues, l'October blues, Blues de Farnham, Lachute en Blues and many more.
Denny spent the bulk of his years in his native state of Indiana but has been living in Montreal since 2007.
On May 18th, 2024, the New Southside Denny album, titled 'Heal It' was officially released at the legendary Martha's Midway Tavern in Mishawaka, Indiana. This recording captured Southside Denny at his best!

Gregg Martinez - Macdaddy Mojeaux (2020)
Gregg Martinez
Swamp Pop is a genre of music created in the late 1950’s by Cajun and Black Creole young people in Southern Louisiana and adjoining East Texas. Like their contemporaries in places like California, the Midwest, and even England, the young people of Lafayette and rural surrounding areas were inspired by the seismic big bang of early Rock and Roll pioneers like Fats Domino, Elvis Presley, Ike Turner and Buddy Holly. But, unlike some other musicians in the 50’s, the Swamp Pop architects lived in the fertile musical basin of Louisiana where Acadian folk music, Black Creole chanting and early Zydeco was simmering along with an open minded appreciation of Country Western musicians such as Hank Williams, Bob Wills and the like. Swamp Pop musicians like Cookie and the Cupcakes, Johnnie Allen, Slim Harpo and Rod Bernard developed a unique style of music that combined all these elements into an alternately plaintive and raucous dance music that was popular throughout the 1960’s and highly influenced the development of Swamp Rock in the late 60’s and 70’s epitomized by Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Band.
Lafayette native son Greg Martinez is one of the modern torch bearers for the pure uncut Swamp Pop of the 60’s. Like so many great modern musicians performing and creating within a roots idiom, Martinez has taken his culturally inherited musical legacy and brought the genre into the present day. Sidestepping the influences of harder Rock interpretations, Martinez highlights the R&B connection to the music. On his latest release MacDaddy Mojeaux (“MacDaddy” is his nickname), Martinez and an expansive list of side musicians and collaborators create a thumping, funky and sentimental statement of modern Swamp Pop.
Album opener “I Believe To My Soul” is a Donny Hathaway reading of the Ray Charles tune in which Martinez sets the tone for the set. Taking a well worn R&B hit, nodding to the interpretations of the song, and infusing it with his own decidedly swampy sensibility is at the heart of MacDaddy’s charm. This conceit is taken to even deeper relief in the reading of the Skylark minor hit “Wildflower.” An 60’s Soft Rock A.M. staple with MacDaddy’s Swamp stamp on it, this sentimental performance transformers into a pleading, cathartic emotional release resplendent with lush background vocals, swaying horns and fiery lead guitar.
Grammy winning guitarist, singer, and songwriter Tony Goulas is MacDaddy’s main man. Collaborating throughout this record, the pair duet on a classic cover of “Starting All Over Again” highlighting again the way to interpret modern R&B through the Lafayette swamp. Local singer Charlene Howard adds her powerhouse pipes on the Sam and Dave chestnut “Don’t Pull Your Love.” Howard and Martinez are in perfect sync swooping over each other and counter pointing perfectly. Takeing the music out into the country, Lafayette heritage stars Rockin’ Dopsie Jr., Anthony Dopsie and slide wizard Sonny Landreth all contribute on the Zydeco leaning original Eva Delle.
Gregg Martinez has had a long career proselytizing the Swamp Pop gospel. He uses his smooth emotive tenor to convey love, pain, power and tradition. It is also clear that like all great Blues musicians, MacDaddy lives the music. From his pastel and extravagantly printed shirts to his variety of hats, Martinez exudes a modern day old world charm. Check out MacDaddy Mojeaux for a river boat ride through some fun and powerful Blues adjacent music.

In my opinion, this work is more mature, the guys are clearly “experienced”, and here I did not hesitate to record with them on the composition - He's the King of Kings - a guitarist like Buddy Whittington, who became famous in John Mayall's band, although on stage, live, he has played with them before - (I don't know if Buddy Whittington is a Christian, but he dedicated his last solo album, Six String Svengali - to his late father-in-law Gordon Carlock, who was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth and served there voluntarily. After Gordon Carlock's dedication, the album booklet quotes the New Testament verse Philippians 4:13 - "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me", which is in the Bible. it sounds like this: "I can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens me.")

Dixie Peach - Dixie Peach (1975)
Dixie Peach
In the early 70s in Dayton, Ohio, a young guitarist named Ira Stanley, impressed by a performance by The Allman Brothers Band, decided to put together a band to play similar music. He was joined by Steve Williams and Mike "Roscoe" Rousculp, and then Tony Paulus, who had returned from military service. Drummer Jerry Barnhart was invited from another local band, and the guys rehearsed for several months in the basement of Stanley's house. In 1972, they went on tour in the southern states. Sometimes the money they earned was barely enough to pay the bills at the bars where they performed. However, the band soon became quite famous and opened for artists such as Joe Walsh, Blue Oyster Cult, Ted Nugent, Roy Buchanan, Canned Head, etc. However, they never got to play with the Allman Brothers Band, but Stanley did talk to Dickey Betts several times. In early 1975, the album "Dixie Peach" was released, among the songs of which their version of the musical theme of the legendary western "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" attracted attention. The self-titled album "Dixie Peach" was their only release until 2013, when the group resumed its activities and released a second album called "Blues With Friends".

Big E and the Wild Hairs - Electrified (2020)
Big E and the Wild Hairs
Eric Whittington and Dave Duggins became fast friends when they were introduced around 2011 and cooked up the idea of recording an album. That project became the album, Bona Fide. The dynamic duo managed to suck in Ed Shaw on bass. Years later, that album still sees ongoing downloads around the world in far flung places like France, Mexico and Japan.
Eric Whittington has been an active San Antonio-based musician with bands ranging from Exit 314 to Crossroads to Hindsight. He sits in occasionally with great local bands and players and spent the past several years growing as a lead vocalist, blues harp player and front man.
Dave Duggins, a multi-talented musician and producer with outstanding chops on guitar and drums and a gifted ear for production detail. He and Eric founded the band in 2012 and he plays everything you hear on the Electrified album except for harmonica.
The Electrified album came out in 2020, Eric and Dave's second collaboration. It takes the sound in a bit heavier, rockier direction. Still a healthy dose of blues DNA but with some anthem rock mixed in. We think it's a good sound for cruising down a long highway and cranking the volume up good and loud. And for singing along, of course.

Chevy Ford Band - The Last Revolution (2010)
Chevy Ford Band
Welcome to Richard Murrey’s Chevy Ford Band! I grew up 50 miles north of Nashville on a Kentucky farm and since picking up a guitar at the age of 16, I have been entertaining professionally in numerous bands of all genres as a bassist and guitarist. In January of 1993, I decided it was time to get serious about songwriting so I moved to Bishop, California (located in the eastern Sierra Nevada mountains). In my 6 years there I wrote more than 300 songs in the genres of traditional country, blues and rock. I re-discovered my childhood love of pure country through the inspiration of artists such as George Strait, Merle Haggard, John Prine, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Guy Clark, one of the best writers I've ever had the pleasure to encounter. Combining those influences with my devotion to the power rock and blues of the late 60’s and 70’s, i began to weave my life’s experiences through the years of romance, love, heartbreak, loss, happiness, and so many emotional situations to tell a story in a different way. I keep playing and writing for the purest reasons, the love of the song. This I have done for years and my catalog paints a wide stroke of life across the canvas. Everywhere I've performed my originals with this band or that, I have received positive feedback and confirmation that I'm doing what I should be doing. Even though, I'm not a "full-time" musician, I am a "full-time songwriter" and constantly coming up with new ideas. My love of music is best shared and that is why I am in high hopes of finding old and new artists who can translate my songs into their interpretive works of art. Our songs are superbly crafted at Steven Cooper's Songwriter's Studio outside of Nashville featuring the Chevy Ford Band. What began as a few songwriter demos has become a diverse and prolific band producing project after project capturing a unique sound, giving birth to it’s own “band personae”. Music for the thinkin' human being... blending roots rock, blues, metal, country, reggae and funk into a most unique styling. With myself on bass, Steven Cooper on keyboards and drums, we teamed up with Jeff Jordan on guitar and James “Bubba” Hudson’s vocal artistry and rhythm guitar work to develop the core of the “Chevy Ford Band” sound while adding the vocal talents of the local Nashville pool for female lead songs and duos. The blues/rock projects added the talents of John Heinrich on saxophone and drew heavily on the guitar talents of Jordan and the years of vocal experience and creative studio mastery of both Hudson and Cooper. If just one of my songs can bring you a smile, laugh, tear or create a emotional moment that creates a memory for you, then i’ve accomplished my goal.

The Paddy Boy Zimmermann Band - The Paddy Boy Zimmermann Band (2024)
Paddy Boy Zimmermann
The pandemic was hard on musicians and commoners alike around the world, and guitarist Paddy Boy Zimmermann – a veteran session player and teacher in Mönchengladbach, Germany – was eager to keep up his chops and jam. He called two friends, and together they produced sounds they liked so much and had so much fun together that this blues rock ensemble took shape and tracks for this debut album took form.
A studio musician and artist for decades, Zimmermann regularly works in with German harp virtuoso and award winner Chris Kramer when not playing in the duo Rob Collins & Paddy Boy. He’s joined here by bassist Rupi Schwartzberger, whose credits include work with the Weather Girls and Black Fröös, one of the seminal groups in the national folk scene, and Jan Wienstroer, the drummer for songwriter Wolf Maahn and TV’s Harald Schmidt Show Band on what’s Germany’s equivalent to the David Letterman Show.
Already familiar with one another after having frequently gigged together, the trio formed an immediate bond and Zimmermann, whose heroes include Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher and the Rolling Stones, started writing originals – something he hadn’t done for 15 years.
The material here was recorded in different styles within the blues-rock spectrum in 2022 and 2023 in sessions at multiple locations, including Paddy’s home studio. It was produced by Zimmermann and mixed by Martin Meinschäfer (Layla Zoe, Kai Strauss) at Megaphon Studios in Arnsburg.
The opener, the ballad “From Your Blood,” kicks off in a whisper before exploding in intensity before modulating to allow Zimmermann space to launch into introspective lyrics, something that transpires throughout the song. He wonders whether he’s misunderstood or simply acting awkwardly because he’s being blamed for things he can’t control. “Brick Wall Boogie,” meanwhile, drives steadily throughout as it complains about the lack of communication in a relationship.
A brief guitar solo opens “Spaghetti in the Night,” which immediately evolves into a medium-slow shuffle with six-string accents and flourishes as it yearns for a decent meal after a hard day’s labor and an impossible trip back home. The band shifts to acoustic for “Alive Shuffle,” the celebration of surviving in troubled times, before the balls-to-the-walls rocker, “Scrambled Eggs,” describes waking up to an aching back and recalling the suggestion of a lady that eggs would relieve his pain – something that was confirmed by a doctor that morning.
The plaintive acoustic ballad, “Way Too Soon,” deals with the pandemic, finding Paddy reflecting on the falling rain and coming to terms that some folks “have to leave even though they’ve taken care of themselves.” It flows into “Streets,” which finds Zimmermann alternating between slide and fingerpicking while singing about walking through a neighborhood and wondering, finding it in disrepair and wondering what happened.
Paddy picked up a guitar for the first time after discovering the Rolling Stones. And he celebrates the first meeting of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards on a railroad platform in Dartford, England, in 1961 with “Platform Two” before the ballad “Green Boots” is delivered from the standpoint of someone suffering from dementia to close. Sadly, Zimmermann’s father suffered from the condition before passing a decade ago.
There’s plenty of struggle and pain buried in these tunes, sure. But all of the material is interesting, and Paddy’s play comes with bite throughout. And despite the accompanying warning to play this one loud, this definitely doesn’t deliver an unrelenting wall of sound. Even if you’re not a fan of blues-rock, you’ll probably find something to like with this one.
