Kenny Wayne Shepherd - Music Hall (2014)
Kenny Wayne Shepherd
Since his birth in North Louisiana, in 1977, Shepherd’s own life has never followed the script. Steeped in classic blues and rock ‘n’ roll from an early age by his dad – a respected Louisiana radio personality and promoter – the kid soon reached for his first Fender Stratocaster and found he didn’t require lessons to make it cry and wail. Long before Warner Brothers subsidiary Giant Records offered a deal, Shepherd had clocked up countless miles on a merciless touring schedule of clubs he was still too young to drink in. “For the first five years,” he says, “I was on the road non-stop.”

Janet Ryan - Mama Soul (2013)
Janet Ryan
I just received the new release, Mama Soul, from Janet Ryan and it's a mover! Janet has a powerful voice and her band is really terrific. Opening with He Burned That Bridge which features some great piano by Chuck Mabrey and crisp slide guitar work by Jerry Sartain backed by Steve Howard on trumpet, Terry Vieregge on bass and Lavell Jones on drums. A laid back jazzy tune, What I Like Best, shows some of the best facets of Ryan's voice. Mabrey takes a nice organ solo nicely balancing the track. On Tired Of Talking, Jeff Robbins (bari sax), Mike Sizer (tenor sax) and Howard on trumpet really fill out the bottom. Ray Chaput plays some funky guitar riffs on this track and Sizer takes a nice walk on his horn. Chaput takes a Santanaesque guitar intro on Mr Misery, a polished radio ballad. This is a bluesy track that really gives Chaput a nice stage to play some of the most blistering riffs on the disc. What Was I Thinking is a very solid ballad that should easily slip into radio airplay lists and also showcases a real nice guitar solo from Sartain. James Brown influenced First To Say Goodbye with horns, keys and searing guitar riffs. On Love Has Left The Building, another bluesy ballad, Joe Meo really blows the doors off with his sax. Say Goodbye is a driving blues track with solid keys and Sartain again on notable guitar work backing Ryan on vocals. Sippie Wallace's Women Be Wise, is a great track and done with a lot of great feel by Ryan and Elliot on piano. This is my select track from the release. The release is completed by Take Your Shoes Off, a powerful chugging soul track. Chaput steps up with another real nice guitar solo on this track over Elliot on B3. This is a mature soul/blues release that should have good radio success.

Tobacco Road Blues Band - Lis & Skull (2025)
Tobacco Road Blues Band
No, the four Carinthian blues rockers of the Tobacco Road Blues Band really cannot be blamed for a lack of diligence. With a concert on the 21st of March at the Eboardmuseum the gentlemen Diwald/Prammerdorfer/Egger/Sauli will release their fifth CD in the eleventh year of their band’s existence.
CD number 5. ‘Lis & Skull’ is the fifth studio production of the Tobacco Road Blues Band after ‘Tobacco Road Blues Band’ (2017), ‘Don’t Tread On Me’ (2018), ‘Papa Legba’ 2021 and ‘IV’ 2023. The DVD ‘Live At The Museum’ was released in 2019.
The TRBB is thus at least the most productive domestic rock band of the last decades. Performances took the band not only through Austria but also to Slovenia, Croatia, Italy and Switzerland.

Rosie Flores - Simple Case Of The Blues (2019) reposted
Rosie Flores
In "Simple Case of the Blues" brings Flores full circle, and takes square aim at a genre she has only touched on in the past. She lends her soulful voice and fiery guitar to songs by Roy Brown, Wilson Pickett, Heath Wilson, and a spate of new originals. Produced by songwriter/guitarist Charlie Sexton (Bob Dylan, The Arc Angels)., with an assist by guitarist Kenny Vaughan (Marty Stuart, Lucinda Williams), Simple Case of the Blues was, to hear Flores tell it, a long time coming: "I got infatuated with the blues in high school," says Flores. "It was the first music I ever played."
She returns to the blues now as a seasoned performer steeped in life's uncompromising lessons. At once torchy, soulful, heartfelt and yearning, Simple Case of the Blues "is the music you make when you've come through joy and heartbreak and back again," says Flores. "It's an ongoing process; I've mastered the life of a musician, but I'll be working on the guitar for the rest of my life."

Al Lukas - In My Soul (2011)
Al Lukas
Armed with a fiery guitar style, emotionally eloquent songs, and a gritty and powerful voice that’s drawn comparisons to Tom Waits and Howlin’ Wolf, Al Lukas is the complete package.
The choice of album title here is totally appropriate. On In My Soul, his third solo album, Al Lukas digs deep, exploring matters of the heart and soul with both passion and precision. The Toronto-based singer/songwriter includes his talented musical accompanists in the equation, stressing that "the title is not just about the music being in my soul, but in the soul of everyone who came in on this album and performed."
The recording method employed was a highly spontaneous one. "We had no music written out. The players came in and heard the track for the first time, and I told them 'we'll sit on you until we get something out of you,'" laughingly recalls Al. He and his co-producer/engineer, Dave Angell, did exactly that, then crafted the results into one highly compelling record.
The core of In My Soul is provided by Lukas' fluent acoustic and electric guitar work and powerfully soulful voice. "I always write from the perspective of the vocal and acoustic guitar interplay, and I focus on the arrangements later," says Al. "Then it's about finding instruments to help set the mood. We wanted that 'dark alley at night' feeling on 'Wolf Like Me,' so the trumpet came in naturally. James Langridge plays with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra, so he knocked it off no problem. For 'In My Soul,' we wanted a dramatic undertone suggesting a struggle. I find strings do that really well, so Anthony Bacon came in on cello." Other top-notch players featured on the album are Rob Bevegnu and BB Grattan (drums), Carson Webber and Dave Angell (bass), Justin Sillman (piano), and Jamie Smith (backing vocals).
The songs on In My Soul cover wide stylistic terrain, making a rigid genre classification of this genuinely original artist close to impossible. The album's sound reflects Al's strong passion for and talent in an eclectic range of musical genres. " I don't even really think about the genre of a song when I write," he explains. "I just write, and with my pool of influences it comes out the way it does. I've been fortunate enough to work under different genres of music onstage, from playing in a bluegrass band when I was starting out, to classic rock and even heavy metal, pop, some jazzy stuff, and the blues, even some Motown. I just try to portray the mood of the song as best I can."In the first single and video, "Tell My Mind," that mood is jaunty and upbeat, making it a perfect catchy summer song for AC radio. "That's about having a little bit of faith, telling the person in the song not to worry because they have my heart and I'll just tell my mind what to do," says Al. "Wild Child" is a heavier blues-rock song, featuring electric guitar work Jeff Beck would be proud to claim, while "Find Me" "One True Friend" and the sweet "Sara Jane" are sparser ballads. They showcase the authentic and subtle power of Lukas' voice, as does the atmospheric and epic title track.
If forced at gunpoint, Al would describe his style as "just something Al Lukas would sing." And can this boy sing! Giving In My Soul a coherent focus is his rich and resonant voice. It seizes your attention from first listen, and never relinquishes its hold. Believe it or not, Al actually had to be coerced into becoming a singer. As a skilled acoustic guitarist, he was touring northern Ontario in his family's bluegrass-based band while in his mid teens, and was soon playing rock 'n roll in the bars of his hometown of Kapuskasing that'd let him in under-age.
"Singing was never something I wanted to do, but my mentor and singing teacher told me 'you can't just play guitar. You need to at least sing backups, and a singer may want to take a break so you can do a couple of songs.' I couldn't argue with the logic so I said 'O.K., I'll learn how to sing.' As I started to sing and project more I noticed I had this rather gruff voice."
Lukas quickly noticed its impact. "It's interesting to see how people react when I sing that first note onstage. I do see heads turn," he says. That's a natural response to a voice that is more a force of nature than an instrument. It has been compared to the likes of Tom Waits, Van Morrison, Howlin' Wolf, and Richie Havens, and Al is certainly comfortable with the Tom Waits reference. "As I grew up, he was always around and in the music I was hearing and playing, but I never knew I sang like him until later. I love his storytelling and dark sense of humour."
Al cites such guitar greats as Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, and Stevie Ray Vaughan as key inspirations, alongside the likes of Ry Cooder and bluegrass star Tony Rice. "I don't write bluegrass songs, but I sometimes still think that way on guitar," he says, as you can hear on the banjo-like picking that graces "Restless Flames." Lukas has distilled these diverse influences into a sound that is all his own, and his songwriting style is now equally original.
Honesty is the crucial and consistent ingredient of an Al Lukas song. "I don't invent stories," he explains. "I try to portray my thoughts and emotions. These songs are all personal interpretations of situations that have happened to me." In My Soul confirms the songwriting strides Lukas has made since his two previous albums, 2007's self-titled debut and 2009's Fall & Flight.
Fuelling many of the tunes on In My Soul was the remarkable experience of his Good Faith Tour. Beginning in the fall of 2009 and lasting seven months, this was far from your average cross-country musical tour. You see, Al didn't book any dates in advance, but instead relied on the barter system. "I'd heard a few things on CBC about people exchanging one service for another, like drywalling a cottage in exchange for a weekend getaway with their family," Al explains. "I then wondered what I could do with a tour. I didn't want to book one, but rather make it like a pilgrimage. I built a bed for my van and got some arctic sleeping gear 'cos I was going out in winter. I stopped in as many communities as I could and on the go I'd book my dates. I'd walk around town, go to the bars that had music and see what I could do. I had my rules. I couldn't rent a hotel room, it had to be bartered. If I was playing music, I couldn't ask for a price. All I could say was what I could offer, and by saying that it was then 'give me what you think its worth.' That could mean meals, or a place to stay, and some gave me money for gas.The generosity was quite striking."
The novel idea caught the imagination of fellow musicians and the media, and Al was able to tour from Windsor to Victoria and back, including a stop in Vancouver during the Olympics. A camera crew met him at different locations, and film footage of his extraordinary experiences is now being edited. This tour was a great leap of faith, but the gamble paid off handsomely, turning Al into a real troubadour and providing fertile material for new songs. "I feel the story is still unfolding as this album is a direct reflection of The Good Faith tour," he says.
The choice of Thunder Bay as a recording locale was a result of the tour, as Lukas met Dining Room Studio owner Dave Angell on his stop there. "I actually slept in the studio then," Al recalls. "When it came time to do the album, there was no question who I'd do it with."
The success of the Good Faith tour is partly attributable to Al Lukas' strength as a performer. He's just 25, but a decade of live performance has honed those chops to a sharp edge. Whether it's opening for Blue Rodeo in front of a large crowd in Kapuskasing, joining Jack deKeyzer onstage in Windsor, playing blues and roots festivals through Ontario, or participating in a jam session with some of Detroit's top blues and jazz players (including legendary trumpeter Marcus Belgrave), Al has never failed to impress.
Now he has come up with a superb record that announces the arrival of a formidable talent. It's time to give In My Soul a place in your heart.

Kenny 'Blue' Ray - Keep the Mojo Workin' (1999)
Kenny 'Blue' Ray
Guitarist Kenny "Blue" Ray has the kind of fat guitar overtones, complex chord changes, and lightning-fast chops that tend to draw rock fans into the blues fold. Not unlike Stevie Ray Vaughan, Ray's playing owes almost as much to his rock influences as to his blues mentors.
Ray's résumé includes performances and recording sessions with William Clarke, Little Charlie & the Nightcats, Charlie Musselwhite, Smokey Wilson, and a bevy of other West Coast blues stylists.
Ray first became interested in music via his father, who played guitars, harmonica, fiddle, and piano. Seeing Elvis Presley perform on the Ed Sullivan Show was a turning point for him, and later that year, his father bought him a guitar. As a youngster, Ray would listen to disc jockey Wolfman Jack at night, who played music by Jimmy Reed, Howlin' Wolf, and others. Ray often skipped school to play guitar with his friends. He made his amateur debut at a high school dance in the mid-'60s.
While in the Air Force, Ray was stationed in London from 1969 to 1972. There, he met Ferdinand Jones and began playing '60s-style soul and blues. After coming back to the U.S., Ray toured with the Paul Hermann Band until 1975, when he took a job as lead guitarist with Little Charlie & the Nightcats, then a regional northern California band.
In 1976, Ray left the Nightcats to head back to Los Angeles. There, he became part of the house band at a club run by guitarist and singer Smokey Wilson. On-stage at Wilson's Pioneer Club, Ray had the chance to back up legendary artists like Big Joe Turner, Pee Wee Crayton, Lowell Fulson, and Big Mama Thornton. A few years later, Ray made his recording session debut with the likes of harmonica player William Clarke and vocalist Finis Tasby.
After moving to Austin, TX in 1980, Ray joined the Marcia Ball Band, touring with her for four years around the Texas Triangle. Ray can be heard on Ball's 1985 album for Rounder, Soulful Dress. He befriended guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan and continued his career as a session man, recording with Ball, Mitch Woods, Charlie Musselwhite, Greg "Fingers" Taylor, Ron Thompson, and Tommy Castro, among dozens of others.
By 1990, Ray decided it was time to start leading his own band, and in 1994, he recorded Fired Up!, the first album for his own Blue Ray/Tone King label. Ray's releases helped broaden his touring base beyond central Texas and northern California. His other mid-'90s recordings include Cadillac Tone (1995), Pull the Strings (1996), and Git It! (1997), all for his own Blue Ray/Tone King label. Most recently, Ray recorded In All of My Life (1997) for the London-based JSP Records. He was accompanied by John Firmin (tenor sax), of the Johnny Nocturne Band, as well as Rob Sudduth of Huey Lewis & the News on baritone and tenor saxes.
On record and on stages around the U.S., Ray's guitar playing reflects his smorgasbord of influences: Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert Collins, and Aaron "T-Bone" Walker. His vocals are powerful and soul-filled. Ray continues to tour around the U.S., Canada, and Europe.

Todd Sharpville - Medication Time (2022)
Todd Sharpville
Todd Sharpville has been the face of the English Blues for 30 years already. His debut album “Touch Of Your Love” released in 1992 on Red Lightin Records won “Best Album” and “Best Guitarist” awards at the British Blues Awards, marking the start of his international career during which Todd and his band played on nearly every blues stage and festival around the world.
The long-awaited new album from British Blues/Americana stalwart Todd Sharpville. “Medication Time” explores a period in his life, 16 years ago, when a custody battle after a difficult breakup ended in a two-month hospitalization in a specialist institute in Wales. “I was not emotionally ready to be separated from my children after the divorce. Until now I was kind of 'control freak', then I realized that control is just an illusion after being hit with depression, suicidal thoughts and being committed to an institution run by the state. Men rarely discuss these kinds of emotions with each other and these emotions can often surprise us and prove to be far too much to handle. Being a musician, I was lucky enough to be able to manage my professional life around my complicated situation. I also have great friends. I managed to get back on my feet. Most people are not so lucky. Many fall to the side of the road and never get up. “Medication Time” examines and expresses many of these emotions that led to my depression, my stay in the hospital and this slow return to “normality”.
12 hard-hitting tracks (9 original songs and 3 eccentric covers) recorded in West Greenwich, Rhode Island and produced by Duke Robillard, 2-time Grammy nominee and multiple BMA winner. As well as 2 duets: one with Detroit artist Larry McCray and the other with Sugar Ray Norcia from Rhode Island.

Scarlet Runner - Groove Thang (2007)
Scarlet Runner
The Jason Leroy Band Formerly Scarlet Runner
In 1994 at the tender age of fifteen and thirteen, brothers Christensen, Jason on guitar and Jack on bass, formed the blues/rock Power trio Scarlet Runner with their next door neighbor Luke Rathe (15) in the small town of Gilbertville, Iowa. Jason and Jack were inspired by their father John who had a large blues and rock record collection, and they grew up with their father’s love of the music.
It was evident early on that Jason was very gifted as a guitarist and vocalist, and he led Scarlet Runner on the road to national acclaim.
During the first year, Scarlet Runner played in front of large festival crowds and opened outdoors for the likes of The Fabulous Thunderbirds, The Wadena Rock Festival, and King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, AR, playing in front of thousands. The next year Jason entered the Jimi Hendrix Electric Guitar Competition sponsored by the Hendrix estate via a demo of Manic Depression. He was selected for the Midwest regional competition held at Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago, where Jason won to a standing ovation and was presented a guitar from Jimi’s father! He then went to the national competition in Seattle (Hendrix’s hometown) and was national runner up! All this at the tender age of 16!
Back in their home state of Iowa during the next couple of years
Scarlet Runner won the Dubuque Thunderfest Battle of the Bands in which over thirty bands from a tri-state area competed! They were voted three years in a row best rock and blues band in the “Cedar Valley” by readers of the Waterloo Courier. In this time they put out two CD’s, South Chain Gang and Departure. These albums got extensive air play regionally, as well as on the nationally syndicated Blues Deluxe radio program with over two hundred stations subscribing to it across the country at that time! Scarlet Runner was also Musicians Magazines semi-finalist “Best Unsigned Band in America” two years in a row, and held similar honors with Mars Music “Big Deal Search!” They performed Rock Fest in Wisconsin with the likes of ZZ Top, REO Speedwagon, Loverboy, Boston, Kansas, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the Guess Who! They opened single concerts for the likes of B.B, King, Koko Taylor, Pat Benatar, and Storyville, just to mention a few.
In 2002 Scarlet Runner disbanded, but not before playing in 22 states at such world famous night clubs as The Grand Emporium, Kansas City, The Green Parrot, Key West, The Cabooze & Blues Saloon, Minneapolis, The Zoo Bar, Lincoln, Freebird Café, Jacksonville Beach, and The Cubby Bear North, Chicago, were just a few among many.
After disbanding, Jason Christensen spent three years on the east
coast touring with drummer Jason Patterson of Cry of Love (Warner Bros)
and Chris Duarte. Patterson then got the drummers spot with
Corrosion of Conformity and left for a world tour supporting Motorhead. Jason then decided to return to Iowa and his roots. He reformed Scarlet Runner with his brother Jack and drummer Jeremy Ackley. News of their reunion has spread fast, as the amount of dates and fan excitement over their reunion has been escalating at a
tremendous pace!
In 2012, Jason Leroy Christensen entered "the Guitar Center Battle of the Blues." This was a competition held in 231 stores nationwide, with over 7000 contestants entering. Jason won the local Cedar Rapids store competition, then went on to the Twin Cities & won the regional. He then went to Chicago to compete in the "North Central Division Championship," and won that. He went on to be one of six grand national finalist in Los Angles at Club Nokia!
Scarlet Runner has put out a third CD on Grooveyard Records, "Groove Thang," to national and international acclaim! There are plans for a new Grooveyard Records Release in 2012 or 2013, under the Jason Leroy name! Jason Leroy Christensen has years and miles of experience behind him, much more so than his young age belies, and is ready once again, to tackle the blues/ rock music world!

Chris Aaron Band - Freedom 5 Miles (2005)
Chris Aaron Band
The Chris Aaron Band, Corey Sterling with CAB, and American Standard are all different names for the same band but I will always think of The Chris Aaron Band when I listen to their music. The setup of the group is fairly standard for nineties - guitar and vocal driven with loud supporting bass and drums. However, there are a few things that set the Chris Aaron Band apart from their nineties peers. One, Chris Aaron is a very talented guitarist. Pulling from Stevie Ray Vaughan's rich guitar tone and technical chops, Aaron sounds fantastic in both supporting and soloing roles. Don't expect a reincarnation of SRV but he is very good. Second, they have in my mind, the best blues vocalist of that decade in Corey Sterling. An extremely underrated blues singer, Sterling has incredible power in his voice which is matched by his range and he is able to sing in way that is part screaming. Sounds a bit unbluesish but it works. Given that the group delivers a loud, blues bar brand of blues, Sterling is a perfect fit. Third, the songwriting is incredibly strong for an under-the-radar group. They do a nice job of mixing slow with fast, soloing with vocals, and not sticking to a common theme like so many average blues groups do.
I have had the privilege of seeing the group play live a number of times before Chris Aaron passed away. Given their style of blues, they are certainly a stronger group live than they are in the studio. As such, the few live albums that exist for this group trump Freedom 5 Miles. However, this album is still quite good and earns them the title of best blues group to emerge out of Wisconsin in the nineties (perhaps ever?). "Pick Em Up Truck" is a crowd favorite here and showcases the unique blend Sterling and Aaron have between vocals and guitar. Each are powerful and talented and without the other, I am not sure the group would function as well as they do. The album's slowest track matches what one might expect from a down-and-out smoky blues bar. Aaron's slow, tone-drenched guitar opens the track and transitions to Sterling's best vocal performance on Freedom 5 Miles. This is easily one of the best tracks on the album. "Abigail" is the album's instrumental track and here is where we hear the SRV influence really come out similar to Vaughan's "Lenny."
Freedom 5 Miles is not only a great under-the-radar album, it is a great album, period. The Chris Aaron Band delivers a passionate album that is the perfect blend of vocals, guitar, and supporting cast. After their live material, this is the group's best work.

Ray Beadle
Ray's guitar and vocal styles evoke numerous blues legends, whilst concocting a breathtaking style all of his own. It is not by chance that Ray has become a favourite amongst Australian blues and music fans. ZZ Top - Fuego A El Paso (1990)
ZZ Top
ZZ Top is an American rock band formed in 1969 in Houston, Texas. For 51 years the band consisted of guitarist and lead vocalist Billy Gibbons, drummer Frank Beard and bassist and co-lead vocalist Dusty Hill, who was replaced (at his request) by the band's bass technician Elwood Francis after Hill's death on July 28, 2021. The band were formed by former The Moving Sidewalks members Billy Gibbons and drummer Dan Mitchell with bassist Lanier Greig, which form they recorded debut single ZZ Top - Salt Lick / Miller's Farm. Mitchell and Greig were then almost immediately replaced by former American Blues drummer Frank Beard and Billy Etheridge respectively, finalising their classic line-up when Dusty Hill, another former member of American Blues, replaced Etheridge in February 1970, shortly before the band was signed to London Records. Etheridge's departure issued primarily from his unwillingness to be bound by a recording contract.
Since the release of the band's debut album in January 1971, ZZ Top has become known for its strong blues roots and humorous lyrical motifs, relying heavily on double entendres and innuendo. ZZ Top's musical style has changed over the years, beginning with blues-inspired rock on their early albums, then incorporating New Wave, punk rock and dance-rock, with heavy use of synthesizers.
ZZ Top was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. As a group, ZZ Top possesses 11 gold records and 7 platinum (13 multi-platinum) records; their 1983 album, Eliminator, remains the group's most commercially successful record, selling over 10 million units. ZZ Top also ranks 80th in U.S. album sales, with 25 million units.
