Weepin' Willie - At Last, On Time (1999)

                                                                   Weepin' Willie
William Lorenzo Robinson (July 6, 1926 – December 30, 2007), known as "Weepin' Willie Robinson" was an American blues singer who began his career in the 1950s in Boston Area Clubs/Lounges, and performed with, among others, Mighty Sam McClain, Susan Tedeschi, Steven Tyler and Bonnie Raitt. Willie and Mighty Sam McClain did a number of shows in the Boston Area in the early 1990s and became good friends.
His only studio record "At last, On Time" was made thanks to the efforts of his fellow blues-man Mighty Sam McClain, in 1999, when Willie was 73 years old.

Robert Heft - The Days That Used To Be (2021)

                                                                       Robert Heft
Sometimes you have albums where not all of the songs are convincing, so you are left with a "nice album" feeling. And that's quite a shame if most of the songs are convincing.

I'm talking about the new fourth album from Robert Heft, a singer-guitarist who was born in Washington, D.C., and currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland.

Most of the songs on his album are in the rhythm & blues corner in a style that could appeal to fans of Delbert McClinton, for example.

Take, for example, the opener of the album All My Wrongs Are Turning Out Right. A soulful song with wonderful bluesy slide guitar playing and powerful soulful horns.

This is followed by the lazily pumping shuffle Another Bend In The Road with Robert on a fire-breathing hard guitar and with a nice soulful swinging organ. If It Wasn't For The Whiskey is a slightly funky shuffle with a sparkling swinging piano and howling pedal steel.

Secrets In The Dark is the award track of the album. A dazzling rocker with a fierce rhythm & blues sound.

Robert also scores well in the “ballads” sector. For example, The Days That Used To Be is a warm and intimate soul blues song and the closing track We'll See You Again Sometime has a vague Pink Floyd (Us & Them) atmosphere.

Unfortunately, there are two lesser songs on the album. Fruit Salad is an instrumental easy listening samba song, which sounds very soft and falls outside the rest of the album.
This is followed by the lightweight pop of If I Go in which you can hear nice piercing bluesy guitar playing.

So I am not yet completely convinced by this album, but I am convinced of the qualities of Robert Heft in his rhythm & blues songs. Peter Marinus

French Blues All Stars - New Flesh (2023)

                                                              French Blues All Stars
The French Blues All Stars is “Chicago blues” in the tradition of B.B. King, Albert King and Freddy King.

Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, who perhaps came to France more often, can also be cited as sources of inspiration for this orchestra.

It’s brash, electrified blues. It’s the blues that doesn’t give up, the angry blues, the blues which through its energy inspired Rock…but that’s another story!

Youssef Remadna

This charismatic singer, harmonica player and sometimes guitarist, will perhaps, if he is confident, go so far as to transform himself into a very funny storyteller.

Stan Noubard Pacha and Anthony Stelmaszack

They are two great guitarists, very recognized in jazz, but they have a pronounced taste for blues! Quite different, Stan is more direct, Anthony is more talkative, more ornamented. Their questions and answers promise intense moments.

Simon “Shuffle” Boyer

The drummer and leader of the group is also a jazzman recognized by his peers but his taste for the blues goes so far as to organize, every year in September, a blues festival at Mont Dore: Volcanic Blues Festival. His nickname “Shuffle” obviously comes from this typical blues rhythm. For this concert Fred Below should be his No. 1 source of inspiration.

Benoît Ribière and Christophe Garreau

Sensitive ears, rest assured, these musicians who for the most part have one foot in jazz and one foot in blues, never fall prey to excessive sound systems.

'Blues With an Attitude' is a collection of songs from the heart and soul of Jeff Cook. They are the result of love and lost love and the pain and anger that resulted from these experiences. Some of these stories have a little humor in them as well. Not all of these stories are true to life but the emotions are.

Foghat - Sonic Mojo (2023)

                                                                          Foghat
2023 release. Foghat continues to appeal to fans of all ages because their music is timeless. They are still touring relentlessly and playing with an energy that perpetuates youthful exuberance, no matter how old they may be. On Sonic Mojo, founding member, drummer Roger Earl is joined by guitarist, engineer and co-producer Bryan Bassett (Wild Cherry, Molly Hatchet), bassist Rodney O' Quinn (Pat Travers Band), and on lead vocals and guitar, Scott Holt (Buddy Guy). Three songs on Sonic Mojo have special meaning for Roger Earl, as they were co-written by Kim Simmonds, the man who gave Roger his first break back in 1967 as a member of Savoy Brown. Sadly, shortly after writing these songs, Kim passed away.

                                                           The Jeff Healey Band
“Live From NYC” continues the series of gems taken from the Jeff Healey Band archives. Recorded at The Bottom Line in New York on September 13, 1988, this show from the band's beginnings was performed shortly after the release of their debut album, “The Light”. Several tracks from that album, as well as some classic covers – like “Blue Jean Blues” by ZZ TOP and “White Room” by CREAM, are on it.

Mitch Laddie Band - Live In Concert (2014) reposted

                                                                  Mitch Laddie Band
Mitch Laddie & his band return with their third album, this time a ‘live’ affair.

Having seen Mitch & the band in concert, it’s great to have a release that reflects  not only the exemplary playing by Mitch, but the tightness of the whole band.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Mitch Laddie Band, they are primarily labeled a blues act, but that doesn’t accurately reflex the varying styles you find on the albums & live.

What you get is a combination of blues, rock, funk and jazz fusion which may sound a little mad, but far from it. What you get are punchy, foot tapping tunes and professionalism that doesn’t reflect how young they are.

And so, to the album itself. Kicking off with ‘Awakening/Time Is Running Away’ off the 2012 ‘Burning Bridges’ release, your straight away thrust into a tight  & well produced sound of the type I personally love. Too many albums these days seem to just have everything cranked up with no subtlety between instruments and acoustics.

Then onto ‘So Excited’ a track I’d say is very much a traditional blues riff & format. Defiantly one for you blues purists out there.

‘Getting It Right’ is another track off the ‘Burning Bridges’ release and very reminiscent of the sort of music that fellow British blues guitarist Oli Brown is releasing. And trust me, that ain’t a bad thing!

‘Linger’ is new to me, and has a slight jazz funk vibe to it. But as I said earlier if this don’t get your foot tapping then you ain’t got soul.

Next up we have a real favorite of mine, again off the ‘Burning Bridges’ album. The track in question being ‘Paper In Your Pocket’ With soaring guitar work by Mitch and a solid bass line, it’s a song to be played again & again.

‘Float on By (Butterfly)-What is Hip’ a fantastic title of a song and at 9 minutes 52 seconds  long not  a quick dip into the blues. A very complex song in terms of structure and one the band play without any hint of a problem live. Again I cannot emphasize how tight this band is.

‘Inner City Blues’ from ‘Burning Bridges’ is next, and presents us the listener with some wonderful soaring blues guitar, highlighting the skill and ability of Mitch Laddie.

‘What Are You Living For?’ is up next with a nice little drum intro to start us off. Leading us into a smooth, laid back kind of  vibe.

Well the funk style guitar is evident straight away on ‘This Time Around’ off Mitch’s first album of the same name, and the old foot starts tapping away as I listen. Just a great bass line once again, underpinning the whole song.

‘Mr Johnson (Revisited)’ is one of my favorite Mitch Laddie tracks. It is of course playing tribute to Mitch’s favorite guitarist, Eric Johnson.  Just love this song, a great laid back number which fans of Eric Johnson will easily see the connection.

‘Open Your Eyes (Take it Back)’ Oh the glorious funkiness of it. Love it!

And so, unfortunately, to the final track of the album. Unfortunately? Well because it’s the last track! But with ‘Them Changes’ being over 10 minutes long it helps ease the pain so to speak haha.

To sum up, a fabulous live album. Dan Mann

Scott Weis Band - Raise Your Hands (2023)

                                                                Scott Weis Band
Pennsylvania Blues Hall of Fame artist Scott Weis grew up in North Jersey and was quickly fascinated by the guitar and blues sound. He became a guest at the legendary House of Music and did odd jobs and guitar parts for major artists in order to earn some studio time with Charlie Conrad. Scott made his way as a guitarist for several local bands before joining Premier Talent Agency NYC as a touring guitarist for many blues and rock artists. Towards the end of the 90s he took a break from touring. In 2011 he had the release 'Almost There'. While the album was flying high in the charts, Scott was recovering from a broken neck, not knowing if he would make a full recovery. A year later he was happily on stage with Dickie Betts. Many solo CDs followed and the Scott Weis Band has also undergone many line-up changes over the years. Now the new long player is 'Raise Your Hand' and it opens with the Delta blues and slide guitar inspired 'Motherless Child', with guest singers Cindy Mizelle, and quickly continues with the heavily charged slow blues 'Shine Down'. From the swamp boogie 'Judgment Day' it goes to the dark 'Raise Your Hands' and 'With a Little Help from My Friends', an original by The Beatles, completely adapted to Weis's will with a big nod to Joe Cocker. The track 'Mindless' nails itself between the harder genre, just like the funky 'Bitch Please' and 'Lost Myself'. The radio-friendly 'Stay' is perhaps the most accessible song, and then the Hendrix-inspired 'Have You Ever Loved a Woman' and the acoustic Delta blues song 'Bring Me Home' come blasting through the woofer. Good looking! Philip Verhaege

Papa George Band - Down At The Station (2004)

                                                                Papa George Band
Internationally acclaimed London bluesman Papa George is admired on the UK blues circuit as an extremely well respected musician. Since the mid-70s Papa George has forged Papa George, born in London from Greek Cypriot parents, is no stranger on the UK & European blues scene. Four decades of playing “live electric and acoustic blues” and now has reputation to be reckoned with. A quote from Muddy Waters guitarist, Bob Margolin, described George as being “A powerful Deep Blues player…a spectacular blues artist. He’s got power and nuance as a master entertainer”.

Inspired by The Beatles and Rolling Stones in the early 60s paved the way for George’s introduction to other British & American Rhythm n Blues greats such as, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf and many other legends, providing George with a tantalizing driving force for developing his musical styles as a rock/blues performer.

George started his professional career as a guitarist/vocalist playing in clubs and bars in London. During the 70s, whilst developing his guitar & vocal skills, he formed the Papa George Band. Since then he has toured the UK and many countries in Europe the USA.

Ксения Федулова - Блюзорукость (2013)

                                                                 Ксения Федулова
Ksenia Fedulova is perhaps the best blues guitarist in Russia. Despite her young age, Ksenia has long established herself in musical circles and continues to delight those who are partial to sincere performance and positive energy.

Impressively powerful vocals, uncompromising guitar playing, delightful instrumental improvisation, an abyss of charm and a flurry of positive emotions - she lovingly sends all this to the audience. And at the moment, Ksenia Fedulova is the leader of the FEDULOVA project (Ksenia Fedulova & JAM DUET), where she teamed up with a first-class Moscow rhythm section. This is bass guitarist Anatoly Smirnov and drummer Alexey Tsyganov, well known in Russian blues circles as a well-coordinated and solid rhythm section with a powerful groove and thick sound. The first performance of this project took place on May 19, 2012. at the V.V.King club (Moscow) with a program of Ksenia’s original compositions. Now, performing in the best clubs in the capital and in other cities, this allows them to conquer and win an increasing number of loyal fans of their talent. In addition to original material, the group’s repertoire includes world blues, blues-rock, and rock and roll hits.

It is not for nothing that Ksenia Fedulova & JAM DUET are invited to take part (and already more than once) in the most significant musical all-Russian and international events: the “LIVE” festivals (Moscow) and the famous “Invasion” in Zavidovo, the International Festival “Arkhangelsk Blues” and All-Russian Rock -festival "Belomor-Boogie" (Arkhangelsk), International Festival "Blues on the Veranda" (Vologda), All-Russian Festival "ROCK-LINE" (Perm), Andrey Baranov Festival "Baranka" (Volzhsk) , International festivals “JAZZ-MAR” (Naryan-Mar) and “Eurasia” (Orenburg), unique gala concerts “Night of LIVING Musicians” (Moscow), as well as live broadcasts in the “LIVE” program on radio "MAYAK" and "NASH" radio and in many, many other events!

In 2013 Their album “Bluehandedness” has been released, which pleases numerous fans of the explosive mixture of rock and roll, boogie-woogie and blues-rock, and we have quite a few of them!

And in the fall of 2014. Ksenia Fedulova had the opportunity to show herself on one of the main TV channels in Russia in the TV show “ARTIST”. Participation in the project and performances on television in front of the whole country served as a means for Ksenia to overcome another milestone and gain countless new listeners and devoted fans of her work.

Ksenia has everything to continue to win the hearts of the public and decorate any holidays, especially if all this is based on a reliable and strong rhythm section, her inimitable “JAM DUET”. Because together they are an all-crushing electric guitar tornado, a stunning voice that breaks through any obstacles, an irresistible and impeccable rhythm, a clear sound of each instrument, an “outspoken” and carefree behavior on stage, showing with all their appearance that music is the meaning of their life!

Geoffrey Chaurand - Chill Out (2021)

                                                               Geoffrey Chaurand
France definitely has incredible talent! Geoffrey Chaurand has long forged a solid reputation as a sideman (Sophie Tapie, Keziah Jones, Thomas Boissy), demonstrator (for Fender), session guitarist and pedagogue, and his first instrumental solo album Chill Out arrives at just the right moment to reveal to us his real artistic scope, well beyond his pure know-how as an instrumentalist. Geoffrey is inhabited by blues, jazz, country and rock'n'roll. This music vibrates in him and tends to mix very naturally within his universe, always with this resolutely funky way of playing, a legacy of his many road trips across the USA. He fed there directly at the source, with precious stopovers in Nashville, during which he was able to sharpen his Telecasters by rubbing shoulders with the local gratin (Brent Mason, J.D. Simo, Guthrie Trapp, Steve Trovato). A stint at the GIT in Los Angeles allowed him to crystallize all his experiences. Taking advantage of a season at half mast (because of the Covid), Geoffrey transformed the garage of his Breton home into a home studio and invited his fellow drummer Stéphane Boutinaud, specialist in New Orleans shuffle and swing, to box eight of his tracks in the most direct and uncluttered way possible: a Telecaster plugged into an overheated Twin Reverb which twists cheerfully, a Fender bass (handled by Geoffrey himself), a rudimentary drum kit, some good microphones and above all an immoderate dose of energy and fun. No need to cross the Atlantic to appreciate the quintessence of "American sound": it is encapsulated in this Chill Out, a concentrate of groove, very catchy melodies and good vibes, traditional in its substance, but modern in its interpretation. . Of course, Chill Out will be a blessing for all lovers of good scratches and vocabulary, friend Geoffrey has something to keep them in suspense, since from Steve Cropper to Leo Nocentelli, via Jerry Donahue, Les Paul, Danny Gatton or even Brad Paisley, he passed them all through his guitar prism. An excellent introduction, so can't wait for the sequel! Ludovic Egraz

Diesel - Alone With Blues (2021)

                                                                         Diesel
Alone with Blues is the fifteenth studio album by Australian rock musician, Diesel. The album was announced in May 2021, alongside the release of the single "Six Steel Strings", and was released on 16 July 2021. the album was supported with the Greatest Hits & Alone With Blues Tour. The album was recorded during the 2020 Covid-19 lockdown in Australia and Diesel played every instrument on the album.

"Six Steel Strings" was released on 19 May 2021 as the album's lead single. The song was written 30 years ago by Diesel and Ross Wilson. Diesel said "It was 1991, I think Ross saw me as a young bluesman in a long tradition. He asked about my background and put details into the lyrics, a tongue-in-cheek take on my life story in demo form that we knocked up together in an hour. It was only rediscovered when he moved house last year, and the timing couldn't have been better because it's such a perfect fit."
"Lost and Lookin'" was released on 18 June 2021 as the second single. A song originally performed and made famous by Sam Cooke. Diesel said he heard the song "a couple of years ago" and was "mesmerised" by it.

Mark Diggins from The Rock Pit said "This is a wonderfully clean Blues album, precise and purposeful and it sets the standards in wonderful stead, it's eschewed the gritty feel of the originals and instead taken a look under the hood, seen what makes the tick, polished them up and delivered them with fresh eyes and ears… And it works beautifully."

Jeff Jenkins from Stack Mazaine said "Here [Diesel] celebrates some of his heroes... What could have been an unnecessary indulgence is instead fun and inclusive, with Diesel delivering short, sharp takes on his favourite blues songs."

Manoucheri - The Blind Leading the Blind (2002)

                                                                     Manoucheri
Dave Manoucheri is one Midwestern boy who had a previous life as a musician he was inspired to dive back in, head-first.  Not by a label or musician but his daughter.

In 2011, Dave's wife, Andrea Manoucheri, passed away, throwing his and his kids' life in a spiral.  He took to the one thing that he knew would heal him, the one thing that was something he brought to a relationship and his alone: music.  Dave began writing, honing and playing material mainly for himself and to get through the stages of life as a single dad.

When Dave's oldest daughter headed to college she followed his advice: find what you love, do it well, work hard, and you may not be wealthy, but you'll be fulfilled.  You will love what you do.  She threw those words back in his face, asking when he'd record a record, go into the studio, and stop using being a single dad as an excuse.

The result is the fact that in 2016 he's entered the studio.  The first single, "When the Morning Comes" will drop on all digital platforms (iTunes, Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, hell if he could get the wires over the streetcars in San Francisco to transmit it he would) on April 22nd, 2016.

Dave entered the studio with AGNTB: The Ain't Go No Time Rock and Blues Band.  Featuring Matt Retz on second guitar and vocals; Eric Rosander on Bass and vocals; Kevin Mooney on drums and Rob Sabino on keys and vocals; it's an amazing band who more or less helped arrange and produce Dave's upcoming material.  They asked him to join their band, which Dave did and he plays with them...when they have time.  (Thus, you see, the name!) When Dave asked them to be his backing band on a solo record they simply asked "where and when?"

Dave Manoucheri has a history with blues, rock, southern-tinged music and storytelling.  A journalist by trade he's a musician by necessity.  (In other words, he plays because he can't fight that urge to make music)  In the late 1980's he began his career with an Omaha, Nebraska band called Drastic Measures.  Their biggest claim to fame was opening for Foghat, who never paid them for the gig. (Don't ask Dave about Foghat.  Those scars . . . they run deep, man. It was only $150, guys!)

Eventually, in a scene like a movie, Dave met with drummer John Wells after a Drastic Measures gig in the back of a car in the middle of a thunderstorm and wrote out a future set list.  They recruited his then teenage brother, Adam Manoucheri to join The Nine O'Clock Blues.  The band recorded their first release, Timeframes shortly thereafter.

Eventually, sparked by the urge to create and write, Adam and Dave created their own band, Manoucheri, with Wells on drums, recording only one release: The Blind Leading the Blind in 2001 to good reviews.  A job that took Dave out of state eventually led to the band...umm...disbanding.  Adam has a solo career with his band Aquadog which released their first disc in 2015.

Now Dave has decided to inspire (or is that annoy?) another set of listeners in another time zone.  His forthcoming release When the Giants Fell will feature songs inspired by the years after losing his wife, the drive to move forward, and the joys that came to Dave and his family.  A single dad of four kids (two girls and twin boys...again...wonder why they're called the Ain't Got No Time Band?) he somehow finds the time to play and sing every day.

Kirky TG & Sinkin' Down - Kirky TG & Sinkin' Down (2023)

                                                                       Kirky TG
Kirky TG is a Houston-based Blues singer, guitarist, and composer with an expressive voice and guitar style. Blending the traditional and modern, TG is about groove, tone, and feel.

Inspired by diverse genres of blues, including urban electric, delta, and hill country, Kirky also has jazz, grunge, classical, and hip-hop influences.

Playing from California to Texas over the last 15 years, TG has performed alongside Teddy Lee Hooker, Jeff Chaz, Richard Trace, and other talented Blues artists. He soaked up the Blues by watching and learning from inspiring musicians in and touring through Southern California. Jeff Chaz, an award-winning original stylist and mentor, once advised him, “When you play the Blues, don’t hold back!” — TG holds this directive dear.

30+ years of musical experience, including training, college education, and jazz studies, contributed to his approach. He started out on piano and voice as a child, studied harmony and composition, performed in choir, and picked up and studied guitar and Blues along the way. His earliest inspirations were soundtracks, classical music, and classic rock. As a late teen, he got turned on to Jazz, a big influence on his style. Later, he explored grunge, heavy metal, hip-hop, reggae, and other styles.

He discovered the Blues 20 years ago after finding the posthumously released live album, ‘In the Beginning,’ by Stevie Ray Vaughan. It’s still his favorite album today, alongside Magic Sam’s, ‘Live at the Avant Garde,’ B.B. King’s, ‘Live in Japan,’ Howlin’ Wolf’s, ‘Live at Alice’s Revisited,’ and numerous other live albums. A student of the art of live performance and recording, Kirky loves the raw, immersive, organic tone and the spontaneous vibe of live recordings. He’s working on the planned release of his first live album.

What drew him to the Blues was the direct, cathartic, and minimalist nature of the music. His favorite reading subject is Blues; he has a substantial collection of in- and out-of-print biographies and sociological books on the genre.

Born in Santa Monica, California, Kirky grew up in Quartz Hill, CA. After high school, he briefly moved to San Diego and then San Bernardino, where he spent 15 years getting educated, starting a family, developing his businesses, and performing. He moved to San Diego in 2016, Austin in 2019, and Houston in 2022.

Kirky started his first Blues band in 2011 and performed for several years before putting it on hold to focus on family, school, and business. From 2017 onward, he contributed guitar and compositions to four electronic albums produced and composed by Zia Seren as ‘sinkindown.’ He became active as a performer again after moving to Austin.

He got his associate’s degree in 2006 in University Studies while also working toward an associates in Harmony and Composition, which he was unable to complete as the final course wasn’t available. Kirky went back to school in 2009 after his children were born and earned a B.S. in Small Business Management and Entrepreneurship, an MBA, and a second bachelor’s in real estate.

He worked for 17 years as a courier, spending his days listening constructively to music between deliveries and while cruising the highway. During that time, he also had side hustles as a digital marketer and real estate agent-investor. After finishing school, he built a successful PR and marketing business which he owns and operates today.

Passionate about supporting the Blues community, he serves as President and Marketing Committee Chair of the Houston Blues Society. He previously contributed to the San Diego and Austin Blues Societies and was a founding member of the Inland Empire Music Society.

A guitar tech who assembles and wires custom guitars, Kirky loves to envision new builds and tinker with electronics. His primary guitar, ‘Discovery,’ is his latest natural-finish Warmoth strat build, with a bubinga neck and black korina chambered body, that incorporates the tone and playability preferences he’s developed in two-plus decades of experimentation. TG’s secondary guitar, ‘Voyager,’ is a custom orange sparkle strat with identical wiring but a different tonal character.

Kirky is an advocate of DEI, peace, sustainability, and a plant-based lifestyle.

Kirky’s inspirations include Albert King, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Magic Sam, Stevie Ray, T-Bone Walker, Kurt Cobain, Hubert Sumlin, Jimi Hendrix, Daft Punk, Jimmie Vaughan, B.B. King, Albert Collins, Dave Brubeck, Big Bill Broonzy, Willie Dixon, Gatemouth Brown, Lonnie Johnson, Howlin’ Wolf, Guitar Slim, Robert Johnson, Louis Jordan, Mississippi John Hurt, Little Walter, Johnny Burnette, Hop Wilson, Son House, Brownie McGee, Sonny Terry, Otis Rush, Bobby Bland, Freddie King, RL Burnside, Alan Haynes, Sue Foley, Tab Benoit, Bing Crosby, Sinatra, Chopin, and more.
