Louise Phelan and Octavio Herrero
Luisa Phelan (an Irish jazz singer from Mexico) and Octavio Herrero (guitarist of the blues band Las Señoritas de Avignon) are releasing a blues album independently. The recording took place in 2021 in Mexico City, wearing masks and observing social distancing.
It is a palette that moves boldly between the traditional and the eclectic,” says Octavio. The album consists of six original songs and six classics of the genre, interpreted with a very personal vision, adds Luisa.

Scott Boyer and the Decoys - All My Friends (1991)
Scott Boyer
You remember Scott Boyer, don't you? The mellow half of Boyer & Talton and key Cowboy conspirator? Okay, the guy who wrote Please Be With Me, a song Eric Clapton took to the bank in the mid-70s (I wish I had a nickel for every time I played the original Cowboy version and someone said, hey, isn't that an Eric Clapton song?). Well, It turns out ol' Scott is still around and still cranking out music and for those of us who revered Cowboy, that is good news.
The thing is, Scott never stopped. After the original Cowboy lineup went separate ways, Scott stayed with Capricorn Records, backing many of the acts in the studio between the occasional Cowboy/Boyer & Talton reformations. And when Capricorn crumbled, he plugged his guitar in whichever amp was electrified, most notably with the Convertibles and the hard working and always employed Locust Fork Band. And, of course, the Decoys.
If you've not heard of the Decoys, you're obviously not from the South. Some of the best musicians living there have passed through or sat in with them including Johnny Sandlin, Kelvin Holly, N.C. Thurman, David Brown and Randall Bramlett, to name only a few. Most recently (2005) they released a cd titled Shot From the Saddle on the rejuvenated Muscle Shoals label, but few know that they had a record out in 1991. Even fewer know that it is still available. That's right. A handful of Scott's (with the Decoys) All My Friends CDs have fallen into the hands of the fine folks at CDbaby and are at this very moment aching to reacquaint old fans with Scott's music. Maybe make a few new fans as well.
Few Cowboy fans will recognize the Boyer contained within, though. Cowboy's Scott Boyer relied upon his folk and country roots for inspiration and while that worked then, this is now. Years of playing bars and honky tonks have taken him in new directions, most notably through the world of blues and R&B. The first track confirms it as Scott's now gravelly and more travelled voice (the result of a couple decades of cigarettes and whiskey, I'm betting) busts into a smokin' bar boogie original, “The Sooner That I'm Dead”, bolstered by walking bass, piano and organ as well as brass. With a nod to a failed marriage (Scott called these the Trauma Sessions), he wails “The sooner that I'm dead/The better off we'll both be/The sooner that I'm six feet under/The sooner you'll be free/'Cause I don't want to live without you/And you don't want to live with me”. Therapy for the heartbroken in the key of bar boogie. “All My Friends” is next, a nod to the past along with a remake of the classic “Please Be With Me” later on the CD. Both basically the same songs as earlier versions, they are given new treatment by the more mature Boyer. More soulful, if you will.
Boyer reaches into the church a bit with the upbeat “My Love Will Follow”, a hand-clapper for sure, and though his voice strains a bit, it actually adds to the effect. “I Won't Give Up” has a solid Grayson Hugh groove and I don't care what anyone says, Hugh put out a couple of great albums in the '80s with soulful Sam Cooke harmonies and light R&B touch. Boyer does the same here. Traditional country is next, an acoustic back porch track arranged by Boyer called “Born In the Country”, elevated by Topper Price's always great harmonica.
Slow syncopated rhythm drives “Fatten Me Up For the Kill”, a track that James Montgomery or the Nighthawks could have played during their runs at the top. Bluesy, sultry, it allows Price to show his worth. The New Orleans style “I Ain't Got Nobody To Love” works very well (so does the brass) and “Honeysuckle On the Vine” is vampish in its lounginess.
Probably my favorite, though, is the upbeat rocker, “Papa Come Quick”, which would make me laugh every time but for the great shuffling rhythms and slide guitar. I mean, “What we gonna do now that Jody is gone” pretty much sums it up when some guys don't have a woman around to do their laundry and cook their food. Great track.
When Scott was approached to do this, he said he would record, but only with the Decoys, so essentially this is a Decoys album. Maybe Scott wrote most of the songs and maybe he sings them, but without the band, it would sound waaaay different. During this period, they were one smokin' band. And they brought in some of the best to help out. Topper Price, of course, and there is stellar work from Randall Bramlett (as always) and Chuck Leavell, who plays some really fine piano on “The Sooner That I'm Dead”. I mean, really fine. Did I mention Kelvin Holly? Wow!
Once again, this isn't Cowboy, but in this case, it is a good thing. Scott Boyer got a chance to lay down where he was at the time this was recorded (again, 1991) and that will be good enough for those of us who have followed him over the years. And what the hey? CDbaby has samples available for listening, so check it out. It's a hell of a deal and these days, you can't beat that with a stick.

Rod Piazza - Harpburn (1986)
Rod Piazza
Rod Piazza, considered one of the preeminent harmonica players around, has become a commanding presence at the forefront of today's blues scene. Billboard has also called him "a star contemporary blues songwriter, as well as the star musician verging on a broader breakthrough." Though he isn't quite comfortable with the term "virtuoso," his skills certainly merit placing him in that company. Piazza's harmonica technique borders on astonishing - a delicate combination of power and grace that maintains the fattest of tones while alternately evoking classic Chicago styles, interpreting R&B horn lines, or playing his own signature licks.
Although it's true that, as the New York Times said, "Rod Piazza has perfected the rough drive and edgy tone that characterized the classic Chicago blues sound of Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson and others in the 50's," he's also a master of West Coast jump blues, incorporating elements of Los Angeles' postwar jazz, swing, and R&B combos.
His band for the last quarter century, Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers, has won the prestigious "Blues Band Of The Year" W.C. Handy Award three times, regarded as the equivalent of the Grammy in the blues field. Piazza has also won the Handy Award for "Blues Instrumentalist-Harmonica," and the band's ability to keep the blues vibrant, fresh and alive has led to countless accolades, awards and nominations over the years. California native Piazza began his musical career in Los Angeles in 1965, when he formed the Dirty Blues Band at the age of 18. They released their first record in 1967, which was quickly followed up by a second album in 1968 on ABC/Bluesway Records. At the same time, he was cutting his musical teeth on local club dates with blues pioneers such as Big Mama Thorton, Big Joe Turner, and T-Bone Walker.
Rod then joined his long-time mentor, George "Harmonica" Smith, Muddy Waters' former harmonica player, to form the double harmonica outfit called Bacon Fat. It was through George that Rod learned the power of a dynamic stage performance and developed his prodigious harmonica talents. "He taught me to always have a plan, to always know what you were going to play before you hit the stage," says Piazza of his mentor. "He would listen closely to whatever you played, then he'd say, if you're not going to say anything different, you shouldn't be up here. He didn't want me trying to mimic him, or anyone else. Be yourself, he'd always say."
Rod released two Bacon Fat albums in 1969 and 1970. In 1973 Rod hired a talented young piano player and Otis Spann disciple named Honey Alexander, who was later to become his wife. In 1976 Rod and Honey began to perform regularly together as the Rod Piazza Blues Band and the Chicago Flying Saucer Band.
In the 1980's, Rod assumed the role of producer, often using the Mighty Flyers as the backing band, for a number of LPs for the local Murray Brothers label. These recordings of important but somewhat overlooked blues artists such as Jimmy Rogers, Johnny Dyer, Pee Wee Crayton, Smokey Wilson, and George "Harmonica" Smith have been reissued in recent years by Blind Pig.
In 1980 Rod and Honey formed Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers with long-time bassist Bill Stuve. The group has earned a reputation as one of the hardest working bands who consistently push the boundaries of the blues while still staying vital and true to the spirit and soul of the music. As Blues Revue put it, "Rod and Honey front one of the most popular blues bands in the world. Whether they play at an intimate club, a packed rock room or a huge festival, the Mighty Flyers share with the audience their passionate love of the blues in every show.'
For well over two decades, Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers have solidified their position in the top ranks of blues acts by maintaining a busy touring schedule, playing to every manner of club, concert hall, and festival. They've also been prolific recording artists, releasing nearly a dozen albums. They mix earthy originals, rousing jump tunes, earnest boogie and slow blues ballads, even an occasional animated instrumental, and remain among the most consistently appealing, enjoyable contemporary units.

Colin James - Chasing The Sun (2024)
Colin James
This is the Vancouver-based blues-rocker’s 4th decade as a performer & with that, some respective guests have joined him on his 21st LP. The new recording’s song stack of 11 Chasing The Sun (Drops Aug 23/Stony Plain Records/51:12) servings was produced & arranged by Colin James & Colin Linden with songs recorded in Nashville, TN & Vancouver, B.C.
The Album is steeped in the blues but there are dashes of gospel & with Lucinda’s unmistakable & raw Americana voice added to the mix it makes for an interesting listen. The great Canadian singer-songwriter Tom Wilson of Junkhouse (“Shine”) & Blackie & the Rodeo Kings adds some songwriting & there are also songs by blues greats John Hammond & Paul Butterfield. Quite many variants make this an attractive endeavor.
This genre because it has been around for decades isn’t as easy to interpret as many would assume. Its simplicity indeed lends itself to any marginal musician who understands the blues structure. But what’s lacking at times is the soul of the genre. Many artists manage these curves without going off the cliff of pretentiousness. Colin James has always had scales to keep his blues balanced but he also had the right forefinger to tip the scales & challenge the form to create a distinctive blues he made his own.
Sometimes the tip of the scales comes from a solo or riff, or the intonation of the voice. Opera doesn’t allow for missteps; It must be sung to perfection. The blues voice needs to project the pain of being done wrong, longing, loneliness & desperation. Something opera & easy listening singers are too learned & trained to understand. Listening closely to Colin you hear certain words acutely emphasized & therein lies the secret, therein lies the magic.
Taking a page from Woody Guthrie’s slogan on his acoustic guitar “This Machine Kills Fascists,” James puts forth a fiery rocker in “This Song Kills Hate,” a fairly good update.
Highlights – “Protection,” “Devilment,” “Star S

Dave Duncan - I'm Not Made Of Stone (2010)
Dave Duncan
In the 10 years since his 1st record (I Don't Know if its True but It Happened To Me), Dave Duncan ("Double D" to his friends and comrades) has been pounding the pavement relentlessly..playing gigs from Memphis to Belfast and writing songs with legends about life & love, harleys and drivin'rain, BB King and Harmonica Lewinsky. In addition to killer grooves and blistering guitarblues, the album features great songs.. 2 of the 12 original songs here are written with Nashville legend Craig Wiseman (who wrote "Live Like You're Dying" for Tim McGraw). The blues classic " 20 Years of BB King" was written with Curtis Salgado, who was recently recognized as "Soul Artist of The Year" by the Blues Foundation in Memphis . In addition, this minor key gem was nominated for Blues Song of The Year 2009. Guests on this record include the legendary Delbert McClinton on harmonica, former Allman Brother Jack Pearson on slide guitar and the irrepressible Jonell Mosser ("Nashville's Most Soulful Singer") in wonderfully supporting roles for Duncan's bluesy stories and ironic twists.
Produced by piano/B3 genius Kevin McKendree, this album was recorded in 10 days at The Rock House with Kenneth Blevins on drums (John Hiatt, Sonny Landreth) and Steve Mackey (Delbert's band) on bass. Dave Duncan has 35 years on the road under his belt, 2 Gold Records(as a songwriter) and the above mentioned Song of the Year nomination... as well as many other cuts, scars, tattoos and awards. Duncan states " I waited all my life to make this record and I am really proud of it. Kevin did an excellent job in getting my best efforts on tape and my friends played so soulfully on here..I am just feeling really blessed to have captured the feeling we all enjoyed making this record...it was really fun. My goal is to sell a mess of 'em so I can make another record.. or three..."

Mireia Vilalta - Apnea (2016)
Mireia Vilalta
Mireia Vilalta i Soler, from Girona, I started in the world of bands, with a lot of passion, from a very young age.
Currently, I am with Pinten Bastos, collaborating with FINA. From 2014 until now, I have committed to my own project Mireia Vilalta, releasing in 2016 my first solo album, "APNEA". A concern that I had had for years, and that has finally come to light.
I have always been a restless woman with a desire to learn and improve at all times, always looking to my musical influences such as Carlos Santana, Gary Moore, Steve Ray Vaughan, Joan Baez, Janis Joplin, among others.
I have been so passionate about music, that I have been part of different formations, Tant De Bo, Crossroads Blues Band, The Maria's, Capital S, Gir, doing intense learning, surrounded by music.

Peter Veteska & Blues Train - Full Tilt (2023)
Peter Veteska
Peter Veteska and Blues Train, formed in 2013, is led by New York Blues Hall of Famer Peter Veteska on guitar & vocals; B3 legend Jeff Levine on keyboards; and top-flight Jersey Shore musicians Alex D’Agnese on drums and Coo Moe Jhee on bass. Marty Gunther, Blues Blast Magazine, describes Veteska as "one of the most talented but overlooked artists in the blues world today."
Recorded live with minimal overdubs with the goal of producing a finely-tuned studio album without sacrificing the vitality and spontaneity of the band's live performances, Full Tilt opened a pathway to honing the Blues Train sound. The twelve tracks, eight of which are originals, are a distinct and exciting departure from the band's previous releases. The excellent work of recording engineer, Joe D’Maio, and the exceptional musicians involved keep the Train rolling forward, full steam ahead, on this sophomore Blue Heart Records release.
