Mike Hammar And The Nails - Raised In The Dirt (2024)

                                                                 Mike Hammar
Mike Hammar has been playing the blues up and down the state of California for the past 25 years. This Oklahoma born Native American was brought up on the blues by his father Mike Hammar, Sr. who introduced him to the music of Lightin' Hopkins, Gatemouth Brown, T-Bone Walker, and BB King. After years of being a sideman, Mike set out to create his own legacy. He put together a hard working blues band in 2001 and swore he would do his best to write, record, and perform his own style of blues. Mike Hammar and his band, The Nails, released their first album "Going Home" in the summer of 2004. Their album has received airplay on American Roots Music Radio in Norway, England, Germany, Belgium, Canada, and on the college radio circuit here in the United States. In 2009, Mike and the band won the prestigious Monterey Bay Blues Festival's Battle of the Blues Bands. They followed that up with the release of their second album "Recipe for the Blues" in the summer of 2010. This sophomore effort presented 12 eclectic blues tunes written and produced by Mike Hammar. One of the songs from this album "This Ain't Goodbye" was nominated for an an Independent Music Award. Blues for the Gulf selected another song from the album, "Before Miss Katrina", to be part of a national multi-artist digitally released album in 2010. Mike's music has been featured on Sirius XM Radio's BB King Bluesville station. Mike and his crew have had the honor of opening for some of the biggest names in modern blues. They continue to make their mark on the California blues scene with well crafted original music and heart felt performances. Mike's band consists of "Harmonica Jim" Pedersen, Sparky Gehres on the bass, Greg Merino on drums, and Allan "B3blues" Carroll on the Hammond organ. This unique blues crew offers a refreshing new feel to a traditional American genre of music. Influenced by many blues styles, their sound is eclectic, enthusiastic, and energetic.

                                                                      Jose Alvarez
I started playing guitar in my early teens after my mother picked up a nylon string from a person selling them on a street corner in Mexico City. Soon after, I started lessons with a couple of different people, but made little progress. Around the time I turned 14 I decided to give up skateboarding and dive head first into blues guitar - all after listening to a couple of Albert King records.

Khalif Wailin Walter - Phoenix Risin’ (2024)

                                                                  Khalif Wailin Walter
Khalif Wailin Walter, who was born in Chicago as Walter Malone, has already built up a considerable track record. He started out in the band of his uncle and mentor Carl Weathersby, and later joined Lonnie Brooks' band as a guitarist, with whom he would tour extensively for over 4 years. B.B. King's daughter Shirley King then approached Khalif to act as bandleader of her touring band. The fact that Khalif performed at the Chicago Blues Festival in 2001, 2003, 2007, 2013 and 2017, the largest and longest running blues festival in America, where more than 500,000 fans enjoyed this free music spectacle for three days, is certainly worth mentioning.

In 1999, Wailin Walter released his first CD under his own name. On his own Damnyalljamn label, the album Shimmy, Shake, Stomp, Shout is released, which he recorded independently with his band The Blues Screamers. The CD, which is well received, shows the many facets of Khalif's playing and gives him the opportunity to tour intensively through Europe and to perform as a headliner at festivals in Germany, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Croatia, England, Spain, Austria, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Italy, Poland, Estonia, Slovakia, Ireland, Romania, Belgium and even Morocco and South Africa. His second album Let Me Say That Again from 2008 also enjoys good reviews.

In 2012, this album is followed by She Put the Voodoo On Me. This CD is again released on his own label Damnyalljamn Productions. This shows that Khalif is an artist who prefers to keep everything in his own hands and does not want to make concessions to his music for the sake of all kinds of music publishers. We know Khalif Wailin Walter mainly as an electric guitarist who allows a large dose of funk and boogie in his playing and then knows how to deliver it with passion and conviction. His great examples Otis Rush, Freddy King and Albert Collins can always be heard in his playing, but Santana, Prince and even Bruno Mars also influence his way of playing. With the release of Man, Mic, Guitar in 2016, Khalif shows a completely different side of himself. He presents this complete acoustic album under the name K. Walters and with this album he shows his versatility as an artist.

He does not limit himself to blues but gives space to Soul, Pop, Rock, Gospel, Country and Funk influences on this album. His penultimate release Nothin’ Left To Lose, which was released on Pepper Cake (ZYX) records, includes various blues styles but there is also enough room for his roots, the Chicago blues, which he learned at the ‘Blues University’, the school that Khalif underwent by going to jam sessions in the city 5 or 6 nights a week and thus earning recognition and respect from other musicians. On September 20th his new album Phoenix Risin’ will be released on the ever active Timezone Records label. The fact that Khalif Wailin Walter still wants to keep a tight rein on things is evident from the fact that he wrote, recorded, produced, mixed and mastered all the songs himself and that in addition to all the vocals, he played the guitar and bass parts and even percussion on a number of tracks. “Phoenix Risin’ is in many ways the cd I’ve always wanted to make. It took a lot of time and work for all of the circumstances to collide and assemble the right people to come together to make it happen the way I heard things in my head” he explains on the accompanying release sheet.

Khalif Wailin Walter kicks off with the shuffle Connie-Lee, on which the horn section with Tommy Schneller and Jurgen Wiechning on tenor and baritone sax respectively create a pleasantly sultry atmosphere. It is a pleasure to enjoy the beautiful solo by pianist Chris Rannenberg and after which Khalif himself briefly but powerfully whips things up with some spicy string work, the tone is set. In Baby, Please Lie To Me the band shifts up a gear. On the powerful slow blues The Streets keyboard player Jacek Prokopowitz comes to support Khalif, who shows what he is capable of with a nimble guitar solo.

And then it's time for the next guest, Gary Winters, who modestly adds to the rocker Phoenix Risin' with his wonderful trumpet and flugelhorn playing. After two wonderfully dragging shuffles I'm Through Cryinn' and Big Booted Woman, on which he expresses his preference for slightly plumper ladies, Khalif slows down in the slow blues I'm Your Love Doctor, on which bassist Marcis Kalnins, drummer Rolands 'Rolx' Saulietis and organist Artis Locmelis provide a steady accompaniment. Martin 'Tines' van Toor (tenor saxophone) and Evert Hoedt (baritone saxophone) complete the guest list on the shuffle Stone Cold Busted.

Khalif closes the disc with the instrumentally played Chi-Town Soundcheck with razor-sharp solid guitar playing by this test sympathetic blues artist. I still have to mention that the session drummer Barry Wintergarden from New Orleans is responsible for the solid drumming on the lion's share of the songs. With the switch to Timezone Records, Khalif takes another big step in his career, his music will be distributed even more widely. In short, an absolute must!

Brian Stoltz - Up All Night Live (2007)

                                                                    Brian Stoltz
One of New Orleans' premier guitarists, Brian Stoltz has defined the city's funk guitar sound for several decades as a longtime cohort of the Neville Brothers, The Meters, and Dr. John. He has, in equal measure, based his career on virtuosity, raw emotion and a funky, yet blistering signature style. Stoltz has gained a reputation as a masterful and progressive singer/songwriter/guitarist whose music has centered around his melodic and fluent fretboard mastery as well as a skill for powerful, emotional songwriting.

On Up All Night, fans get to hear the pure blues power and songwriting that crackles like fire in the live setting. Recorded at Alligator Alley in Oakland Park, FL in September of 2006, this double disc set finds the four-piece blues and rock band setting the night on fire!

Eric Clapton - To Save a Child (2024)

                                                                    Eric Clapton
Eric Clapton, once an essential part of the ’60s with his many bands that he performed with, and his ’70s and ’80s solo works that garnered plenty of attention. While his name, these days, isn’t as packed with the punch it used to be, Clapton still has an indebted group of admirers that enjoy listening to the classic guitarist in his natural element.

On July 12, Eric Clapton will release the audio portion of a December 8, 2023 concert established to bring aid to the children of Gaza. The show was filmed and broadcast from the RD Studios in Park Royal, London. The shows were broadcast on January 17 and 18 across the earth. There were 11 songs performed from Eric Clapton‘s vast catalog as well as a surprise visit from Dhani Harrison for a rendition of “Give Me Love” (Give Me Peace On Earth)”. To add even more value, a brand new Clapton studio track is included – “Prayer Of A Child”. The set is being called To Save A Child – In Aid of The Children of Gaza – An Intimate Live Concert.

Mighty Joe Young - Live At The Wise Fool’s Pub (1990)

                                                               Mighty Joe Young
There was a time during the late '70s and early '80s when Mighty Joe Young was one of the leading blues guitarists on Chicago's budding North side blues circuit. The Louisiana native got his start not in the Windy City, but in Milwaukee, where he was raised. He earned a reputation as a reliable guitarist on Chicago's West side with Joe Little & his Heart Breakers during the mid-'50s, later changing his on-stage allegiance to harpist Billy Boy Arnold. Young recorded with Arnold for Prestige and Testament during the '60s and backed Jimmy Rogers for Chess in 1958.

After abortive attempts to inaugurate a solo career with Jiffy Records in Louisiana in 1955 and Chicago's Atomic-H label three years later, Young hit his stride in 1961 with the sizzling "Why Baby"/"Empty Arms" for Bobby Robinson's Fire label. Young gigged as Otis Rush's rhythm guitarist from 1960 to 1963 and cut a series of excellent Chicago blues 45s for a variety of firms: "I Want a Love," "Voo Doo Dust," and "Something's Wrong" for Webcor during the mid-'60s; "Something's Wrong" for Webcor in 1966; "Sweet Kisses" and "Henpecked" on Celtex and "Hard Times (Follow Me)" for USA (all 1967), and "Guitar Star" for Jacklyn in 1969. Young even guested on Bill "Hoss" Allen's groundbreaking 1966 syndicated R&B TV program The Beat in Dallas. Late-'60s session work included dates with Tyrone Davis and Jimmy Dawkins.

Delmark issued Young's solo album debut, Blues With a Touch of Soul, in 1971, but a pair of mid-'70s LPs for Ovation (1974's Chicken Heads and an eponymous set in 1976) showcased the guitarist's blues-soul synthesis far more effectively. Young's main local haunt during the '70s and early '80s was Wise Fools Pub, where he packed 'em in nightly (with Freddy King's brother, Benny Turner, on bass).

In 1986 Joe began work on a self-financed recording that would finally allow him to have complete artistic control. At this time he also discovered surgery was needed on a pinched nerve in his neck. Following the operation, complications arose that affected his ability to play guitar. As part of psychical therapy he continued to work on the album sporadically until Mighty Man was finally released in 1997. Unfortunately health problems continued to plague Mighty Joe and he passed away on March 25, 1999 in Chicago. He was 71.

Greg Piccolo - Heavy Juice (1990)

                                                                     Greg Piccolo
At age nineteen, Duke Robillard recruited Greg as one of the earliest members of what became the Rhode Island based powerhouse, Roomful of Blues. The unifying magnet within the group in its early years, 1969 -1971, was focus on the rootsy, retro, danceable, swing sound of the ‘40s and ‘50s. This “new” sound to teenage ears and the recall of this music to the older folks, filled dance floors all over the band’s New England home-base and eventually on the global stage.

For the next twenty-four years, Greg Piccolo had amazing experiences playing with and/or recording with such music legends as Big Joe Turner, Earl King, Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson”, Pat Benetar, Red Prysock, Stevie Ray Vaughan, to mention only a few.

As Roomful players would come and go, Greg’s twenty-five year contribution evolved to lead singer and bandleader, all the while being noticed world-wide for his signature “fat” tenor sound, unique sax style, and distinguishable vocals.

After nearly twenty-five years with Roomful of Blues, Greg sensed a calling to go back to his roots and develop his “heavy juice” sound. This “less is more” approach gave him the freedom to cover the gamut of his musical longings, which include traditional jazz, r & b, and rock’n roll. He had compiled a well of songs which demanded their own arrangements and band configurations outside of the classic “Roomful sound.” In 1994 he stepped away and officially formed his own band, Heavy Juice, which led to his first solo release, self-titled, “Greg Piccolo Heavy Juice,” on the legendary Louisiana-based Black Top label.

Following were two releases, Red Lights and Acid Blue, on the famous California-based Fantasy Label (now Concord), and his first all instrumental tenor sax release titled “Homage” on the Pennsylvania-based Emit Doog label.

His most recent release, “Who Did This?” is a tribute to his favorite sax recordings and includes an original recorded tenor instrumental.

Now at seventy years of age, Greg Piccolo is still practicing his horn every day, writing his own material, and traveling the world with Heavy Juice.

Piccolo is an example of someone who has always played from his heart.

Mr Hardearly - Mean Blues (2021)

                                                                     Mr Hardearly
In 35 years of career, Mr HARDEARLY has shared the stage with many internationally renowned artists such as ZZ Top, Status Quo, Bernard Allison, Les Commitments, Joe Louis Walker, Ten Years After, Georgia Sattelites, Andy J Forest, Van Wilks, Fred Chapellier, to name a few.
His new album "Redemption & bad habits" brings yet another dimension to his discographic and musical achievements, a maturity that he has achieved by traveling the roads, with more than 1500 concerts across Europe, which places him today among the essential blues artists in France!
Redemption & bad habits, Mr H's 6th studio opus is the one that most resembles him, allowing him to assert his place among the best French guitarists!

His rocking voice brings the extra touch to highlight the quality of this album released on February 9, 2024, still with the REBEL MUSIC label and a SOCADISC distribution.

The 15 tracks that compose it trace the news that we all live, that concerning his addictions of all kinds for example with "Bad sign, Before you make me going mad, Tightrope", the depression due to the loss of a loved one (Sure you're still around, I ain't got nothing but the Blues) but also the problems of relationship (Sending all my love, Good with my lady, I'll be killing you or Just got ten stones left from Le Havre) or the current economic crisis (Double bum, Looking for love) without forgetting some instrumental firecrackers of which he has the secret (Redemption & bad habits, The miracle (Tribute to Jeff Beck)).

This new album is a turning point in his career, much more accomplished than the 5 previous ones, reflection of 18 years of work that brought him a very personal sensitivity that raises him today among the greatest guitarists/singers of French blues.

But, rest assured! His White Urban Blues (Blues Urbain) remains more relevant than ever …

Mr Hardearly: an artist to (re)discover on stage too…….

At fifteen, Mr Hardearly took the path of truancy, his first guitar on his back, which he would tame by listening to legendary guitarists like J. Winter, J. Hendrix, S.R. Vaughan and Jeff Beck. He then recorded his first demos on a 4-track.

This very young Parisian Titi discovered England during language stays, and scoured the streets of London and Brighton in search of a Clapton vinyl or an effects pedal. The die was cast! Our young man became a guitar virtuoso and an esteemed sound engineer: Mr H plays music imbued with British Blues marked by the spirit of the great masters of the genre.

He plays throughout Europe, and in the wake of his previous CD Still alive & well (released at the end of 2009 and acclaimed by the specialist press), Mr H produces "White Urban Blues", a powerful album with energetic and chiseled guitars of which he has the secret.

Author and composer of 12 tracks on the album, Mr H explores the meanders of the so-called Devil's music, from the most roots to the most modern, from Muddy Waters to JL Walker, and mixes with this singular and explosive universe a subtle blend of power and softness, sublimated by his Stratocaster which screams on some tracks and cries on others.

Mr H's blues draws on his life, his daily life as a city dweller far from the cotton fields of origins. The sound of "White Urban Blues" is energetic, modern, and since you can never be better served than by yourself, Mr H recorded it in his El Grotto studio with its vintage decor, which he created about twenty years ago and in which Mauro Serri, Ron Smith, Juju Child, Slim Batteux, etc. have recorded, among others.

On stage and in the studio, Mr H is accompanied by a soul & groove bass/drums rhythm section that has been following him for several years now.

At the start of the 2016 school year, Mr H released the album X-perienced, a reflection of these 3 years of incessant touring (more than 250 dates since 2013), recorded live at the El Grotto studio and which sets the bar even higher than the previous album with more accomplished and more mature compositions. The album contains more than an hour of Blues (15 tracks including 2 instrumentals and 2 covers) in a guitar register that the greatest masters of the style would not deny with lyrics firmly anchored in the reality and daily life of our time. The programmers are not mistaken either since the group already has dates planned until 2023.

In 2018 the group celebrates its 10th anniversary with the release of the 4th album "I'm a Bluesman" on which Fred Chapellier records some burning solos. The 12 tracks of this opus are firmly anchored in the music of the devil and resonate to the sound of the maestro's Stratocaster. The tone is set: Blues, Blues, Blues !!!!!

The compositions follow one another with equal happiness as well as the 2 covers (Deep Purple and Junior Wells) that this CD contains. Also released is a Live album (One more from the road), an excellent reflection of the energy that the group has on stage.

In 2021, the album "Mean Blues" was released, recorded during the Covid health crisis with themes still rooted in current events but also more serious subjects such as drug addiction, suicide, the destruction of our planet or the mistreatment of women. We also discover some rather Funky compositions, with brass, a style in which the maestro had not ventured since his Live DVD in 2010. The guitars continue to cry and move us throughout the very inspired solos of the virtuoso guitarist. Mean Blues, a strong, intense and punchy album!!!!

His new album "Redemption & bad habits" (2024) brings yet another dimension to his discographic and musical achievements, a maturity that he has achieved by traveling the roads, with more than 1000 concerts across Europe, which places him today among the essential blues artists in France!

Redemption & bad habits, Mr H's 6th studio opus is the one that most resembles him, allowing him to assert his place among the best French guitarists!

The 15 tracks that compose it trace the news that we all live, that concerning his addictions of all kinds for example with "Bad sign, Before you make me going mad, Tightrope", the depression due to the loss of a loved one (Sure you're still around, I ain't got nothing but the Blues) but also the problems of couple (Sending all my love, Good with my lady, I'll be killing you or Just got ten stones left from Le Havre) or the current economic crisis (Double bum, Looking for love) without forgetting some instrumental firecrackers of which he has the secret (Redemption & bad habits, The miracle (Tribute to Jeff Beck)).

This new album is a turning point in his career, much more accomplished than the 5 previous ones, reflection of 18 years of work which brought him a very personal sensitivity that will touch the lovers of authentic Blues.

These three never leave the stage and the "Redemption Tour 2024" has already started, impatient as they are to share their new compositions with their audience.

Don't miss them! It is in concert that they give their full dimension.

Guitar-slinger Wildcat O'Halloran has been thrilling audiences in Western Massachusetts for over thirty years, and is currently promoting his 18th album “Lead Me Not Into Temptation….I can Find It Myself",already described as “a Masterclass in tone and grit”... building on the success of the previous:   “Here Lies A Fool”,"Can't Fall Off THe Floor" "Deck of Cards" " NYC Chill", "Hot Pulldown", "Midnight Service Call","Party Up In Heaven", and “Drinkin' With the Harp Girls” each of which was played on over 200 stations, and called “crazy-fun” by the Boston Blues Society and “a great release” by the UK's Blues Matters. Living Blues Magazine wrote: “Wildcat emerges as one of the most entertaining songwriters in contemporary blues...and his band doesn't know the meaning of dull!”

The band has opened for just about every major blues artist to visit Massachusetts, from Greg Allman to John Lee Hooker to The Stray Cats, and has been backup band for Bo Diddley and James Cotton. Recently, they opened for Duke Robillard at Greenfield's Hawks and Reed Music Hall.

Often featured at Millennium Music Conference, and  longtime host of the  Sunday Blues Jam in Northampton, the Wildcat (guitar and vocals) will often be accompanied by "Dr." Kathy Peterson(Bass), “Ottomatic Slim" (harp),  and drummer Randy Vaughn.

Living Blues added these kudos : “the grooves are so damned infectious, and the guitar playing so stirring....The Wildcat O'Halloran Band can make you dance and make you laugh if you let it...irresistible”

Described as "a Masterclass in tone and grit", the 2024 Wildcat release has brilliant harp and guitar, witty lyrics and a range of blues from the traditional to the adventurous. People wonder why the Wildcat isn't more famous.....that mystery is addressed!

Roadhouse - Gods & Highwas & Old Guitars (2013)

                                                                      Roadhouse
That the sturdy blues/rock/Americana sound of London area band Roadhouse travels has been evidenced time and time again by the international airplay that the ensemble garners with each successive album release. Thus far this new set seems to be gathering traditional attention and then some.

Driven, as ever, by the power house rhythm section of Bill Hobley and Roger Hunt, the group sounds utterly focussed from the off as ‘Hell on Wheels’ punches out of your speakers. The more you listen to the current edition of Roadhouse, the more you realise that main writer and proprietor Gary Boner and ace guitar man Danny Gwilym have distinctively different guitar styles. However this works in favour of the group’s dynamic attack with Boner’s chiming arpeggios and buzzing solo runs weave in and out of Danny’s classic rock edgy chords and pokey leads. It is pleasing that they have collaborated on some of the selections here. Somehow the classy Martin Cook artwork, evoking heartland America in the Depression, exactly suits the gritty music on the album and none more so that on ‘Skinwalker’ with its harsh Boner vocal and tuneful vocal work by Mandy G and Sarah Harvey-Smart. Also appearing on the record here and there – Suzie D, who has sung many times at the band’s shows.

When a new album is released it is always interesting to the Roadhouse follower because Boner tends to put compositions into the set list as they are readied. Therefore familiar songs are mixed with material one has not heard.

Highlights of this record – the emphatic title cut ‘Gods & Highways & Old Guitars’ with fine Mandy G reading of the lyric against a prairie chug; the Who-like chordal intro and film noir lyric of ‘Katrina’. As ever Boner’s lyrical writing reeks of vintage Robert Mitcham and Lee Marvin films and this is a key element in his muse, not to mention supportive factor in his vocal delivery. Probably more than other recent releases this album plays up the gritty male/sweet female contrast. The guitar runs here are a curious mix of fluidity and stutter, with the chorus having more than a tinge of middle period Fleetwood Mac.

‘Slow Down’ is a nimble boogie with Sarah sounding confident and the rhythm section sharp as a tack. Mandy G sings ‘Blues Motel’ as only she can, bringing a mixture of world weariness and pure soul against a lively guitar arrangement. Closer ‘Sinner’ has a tinge of The Band in its dark-cloud setting moving into a fleet axe weave and a precise vocal arrangement, that GB ache present and correct. He does sound as though he has much to get off his chest.

And so Roadhouse fly the flag for punchy music with sophisticated elements and long may they continue to deliver.

Dillion James - Heavy Keys (2024)

                                                                   Dillion James
New Orleans piano, funky Hammond Organ, and raw bluesy vocals
With roots firmly embedded in New-Orleans piano & funky Hammond Organ, Dillion James has re-birthed the sound of an earlier era.

Dillion's new album 'Heavy Keys' reached #1 on the Australian Blues and Roots Airplay Chart, and is currently still at #2.

His ability to tickle the ivories has long been recognised within the music industry. Whether holding the spotlight in his own right or slotting in as a session musician, if you can dance to it, the 2010 BASEQ blues performer of the year can play it.

The album features Melbourne drumming legend John Watson behind the kit and Mississippi based saxophone legend ‘Buddy Leach’ (long-time member of George Thorogood & The Destroyers) who played most of the sax on the recording. It was co-produced with his string shredding older brother 8 Ball Aitken, who also co-wrote four of the new songs. A hand-picked cast of Brisbane’s finest blues musicians also played on the album.
