More bluesrock! On this occasion we repeat group, the best duo say. We are going to comment on Double Feature, the first album of the Ukrainian bluesmen pair composed by Freeky Cleen and Dickey F. Here we will comment on their last release, the magnificent South Of Pearly Gates of 2012, which joins four that in total make up your discography counting this debut album that now we betray them.
You are curious there is the derivation of these from the Hachas. His first disc was shared completely freely with BY-SA, although with the second and third they turned to BY-ND to, in his last commented work, opt for the more restrictive BY-NC-ND. Perhaps we are not surprised so much now that we know them, but the first thing that I thought was when I discovered that these people came from some remote place in Mississippi, but in, no less than from Ukraine (if frivolous to say, The cover of the disc raises the suspicions that Dickey F. is actually Chuck Norris in his texan journey).
To start dancing we have very energetic blues rock on songs such as Had My Share or Gambling Woman, with the opening disco, in which all the cards on the table are ponen: excellent quality, mix of country, southern, seventies hard and blues for the tube.
The slides change and I like the whole disc, taking all the party out, especially the more traditional and delicious cuts like Gone Train Blues, Walking Cane or Once (this one in particular takes me a high of three pairs, in the can i stay in the chair listening to it).
But for the south, it's a marvel that Feels Like Rain, a ballad that didn't get out of tune on any of Lynyrd Skynyrd's first albums, and on those that later hit hard groups like Cinderella or Guns n' Roses. Simply incredible; in the I can get out of my head this sentence: “Take me to the places, I used to love to be, nothing ever changes, all but you and me”.
By the way, we have space for hard-blues with boogie touches, as is the case of Monkey Cage, whose chorus recalls the Aerosmith in its good times (let's say, all but the post-Nine Lives, what is it, is it right ?) These same reminiscences appear in the following cut clearly, a Jellyroll Loving with a sticky and cheerful stribillo to lift your worst day.
In Writing on the Wall, in addition to all that, there are wind arrangements, pianos and accompanying keyboards that come as an anillo al dedo for this style. Of the guitars is better in speaking because they are sold throughout the record in the rhythmic and soloist facets, although in this song in concrete we have some very good wah wah phrases.
But they are not all American influences, because we also have songs that are more oriented towards English electric blues (although it always has an American influence, of course, that's the origin of all this). For example, Many is The Time for its ledzeppelineros touches or In The Mood, which clearly recalls Cream, especially because of this sticky and lazy chorus achieved.
And finally, you can Pray For Me, a very good blues slow acoustic to put the point and final to what has been an essential record for all rock lovers.
At the end, I am practically sure that we will end up reviewing one by one all the records of this pair of hachas del blues rock. At the moment, I have this “blue shit” that is Double Feature. I have no bad words of praise.
