Sunset Heights One band that Sunset Heights often found itself compared to in the late '90s was the Black Crowes, and that isn't a bad comparison. Like the Crowes, Sunset favors earthy, gritty roots-rock, and also like the Crowes, they come across as a rock band with a healthy appreciation of the blues, as well as the great soul and funk of the '60s and early '70s. None of the songs on this self-titled CD actually have a 12-bar blues structure, but you can't miss the tremendous amount of blues feeling the Houston band brings to melodic, down-home offerings like "Did I Let You Down," "Tangerine" (not the Led Zeppelin classic or the Jimmy Dorsey swing-era hit), "Medicine Hat," and "Memory Lane." Nor can you miss the soul elements Sunset brings to its guitar-powered rock & roll, which often gives the impression that its members are quite hip to the classic recordings of Ike & Tina Turner, Rare Earth, and Sly & the Family Stone. This album isn't innovative, but it's honest and often quite enjoyable.

Earl & The Agitators Rock n’ Roll, Blues and a dash of Country are being served “Shaken & Stirred” in the latest release by the ‘Earl and the Agitators All Star Band’. “Shaken & Stirred” (a follow-up to their 2016 self-titled EP) will be released on Friday, October 26th, 2018. Earl & the Agitators is the brain child of Foghat founding member/drummer Roger Earl, singer/guitarist extraordinaire Scott Holt (former 10-year Buddy Guy alum) and Foghat lead/slide guitarist Bryan Bassett. Rounding out the line-up for the live bonus tracks are Foghat bassist Rodney O’Quinn, guitarist Tony Bullard and percussionist Mark Petrocelli.
“This band was born out of a passion for American Music,” explains Roger. “Rock, Blues & Country. Scott Holt, who played with Buddy Guy, one of my musical heroes, for many years, channels this music with a joy and mastery of a seasoned pro. With his fireballing guitar and soulful vocals, we had a blast writing and recording! And since we are all big Johnny Cash fans we also included a couple of his songs for fun. I love making music with Scott!”
“So, you're in a band and you have some friends that are in another band,” adds Scott. “You get together and hang out, writing and recording music. You share a love for old rock n’ roll, blues and country, so you jam on a Tommy Tucker tune and even take a swing at a Johnny Cash cut from the Sun Records days. You're having so much fun that you give it a name and even take it onstage! The recipe is simple; take your Chess and Sun 45's, throw them in a blender with a dollop of thundering drums, thumping bass and searing electric guitars...I'm pretty sure that's the recipe for rock n’ roll!”
Bryan also realized that EATA were on to something special, straight away. “Over the years of playing professionally I have come to recognize and appreciate musical chemistry. When you meet someone that you just hit it off with, both as a friend and as a musical collaborator, special things happen. And so it was when I met Scott Holt. Our instant chemistry for writing songs and the way we just naturally blended as guitar players lead to us having many tracks recorded for no other reason than we loved writing, playing and recording together. Roger and I have been comrades in arms for many years and now we had all these songs recorded and ready to go. That left us with a conundrum...what do we do with them? Well what we did was come up with a *fun name, ‘Earl and the Agitators’ and we decided to put the songs out there so our friends and fans could listen, and I hope like what we've come up with. It certainly was a great musical experience for Rog, Scott and I and all our fellow collaborating ‘Earls’.”

Bob Margolin With each new album, guitarist, singer, and songwriter "Steady Rollin'" Bob Margolin continues to expand the boundaries of modern blues. Margolin, a sideman for Muddy Waters from 1973 to 1980, was born on May 9, 1949, and raised in Brookline, MA, became enamored with the recordings of Chuck Berry while still in high school and began playing out a few years later while attending Boston University in the early '70s. Working with a variety of Boston-area blues bands and one he called the Boston Blues Band, he elected to pursue music full-time. In 1973, he joined Waters on the road and in the studio for seven years, playing festivals and clubs around the U.S., Canada, and Europe with the legendary bluesman, who died in 1983. Highlights of his career with Waters' band included the taping for The Last Waltz on Thanksgiving Day 1976, and performing at the White House for Jimmy Carter in August 1978.
In 1980, two years after getting his nickname from a Boston DJ, Margolin began leading a band under his own name and did so for nine years before recording his first album for Tom Principato's Powerhouse label. He later recorded a second album for Powerhouse, but both are now out of print. He continued touring before getting his second big break in 1993, signing up with Bruce Iglauer's Alligator label, which by then had grown by leaps and bounds and had secured stable worldwide distribution. Margolin's albums for Alligator are superb recordings that advance the traditional boundaries of the music: Down in the Alley (1993), My Blues & My Guitar (1995), and Up & In (1997). Each one is a delightful mix of familiar blues covers and Margolin's idiosyncratic, insight-filled, and sometimes funny original songs. Hold Me to It followed in 1999. In 2003 Margolin released All-Star Blues Jam, his first disc on Telarc Blues, which featured former members of Muddy Waters' band: Pinetop Perkins, Carey Bell, and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith. The mostly one-man-band effort In North Carolina appeared from Steady Rollin' in 2007.

Tom Holland “As Advertised”…The title says it all. This is “Real Deal” blues from the first note to the last. A reviewer can get weary covering bands that purport to play the blues. Just because you stick a harmonica player in the band and make references to hard times, it doesn’t necessarily make it the blues. Tom Holland and his crew have obviously paid their dues and soaked up the dynamics of what makes the blues the blues. They create an authentic and original sound without mimicking. Familiar sounds and snippets of lyrics pop-up at times, but that is the nature of the blues. Being harmonica legend James Cotton’s choice for guitarist for some years now hasn’t hurt in steeping him in blues. Tom’s guitar styles draw from the well to create something fresh and new. Having a “bluesy” and warm-toned voice doesn’t hurt either. All of this over a tight rhythm section and a few assists from some top-of-the-line players. Strong original blues like what we have hear will keep the genre vibrant in the future.
Hey, what else would The Shuffle Kings start off with other than a easy-loping shuffle in “Waiting For The Other Shoe To Drop”. It’s easy to see that Tom’s voice is the right fit for the music these guys make. His regular and slide guitar skills liven things up here as well as over the entire CD. Big D lays down some heavy harmonica licks over Mike Scharf’s heavy bass line to compliment the greasy slide work on “Hurry Up & Wait”. Tales of returning to his sweetie after being out on the road are set against a breezy rhythm on “Easiest Thing I’ll Ever Do”. Tom’s guitar skills are given room to shine on the instrumental “Hey Pardner!”, along side tasty harp and a grooving rhythm section. Everything gels perfectly and sounds effortless.
Chicago stalwart John Primer contributes his masterful guitar playing to “More Things Change”, two masters doing what they do best. Marty Sammon makes his first of four appearances here, rounding out the sound. They both show up on the band’s theme song, “Shuffle King Boogie”. What a great show opener this one would make. Drummer Tino Cortes makes good use of his “crash cymbal” and is no slouch throughout the record. The band digs deep in the blues for the slow burner that is “Hardest Part Of Loving You”. Nice and bouncy drum rhythms move “Look Here Baby” along at an exuberant pace. The title track, another sprightly instrumental closes out the CD. Equal time is given for Big D to strut his stuff on harmonica.
WOW!…Ok let me finish this up so I can give this “puppy” another spin. This is the stuff that got me hooked on the blues way back when. Dang, these guys can play. Every note and beat just belongs perfectly where it is. The lyrics are basic, but heartfelt. If you are new to the blues or an old timer like me who is a sucker for this stuff, do yourself a favor and pick this one up. bluesblastmagazine

Jimmy Ley My late friend Tim Schuller was a Dallas-based blues scribe, but before making his way down to the Lone Star State, he grew up in Youngstown, Ohio, and spent time in Cleveland and Chicago. Tim had many stories about Cleveland-based performers like Robert Jr. Lockwood and Bill "Mr. Stress" Miller. While lesser known outside Northern Ohio, Jimmy Ley was an estimable performer who shared plenty of stages with both Lockwood and Mr. Stress, as well as legendary guitarist Glenn Schwartz (James Gang, Pacific Gas and Electric). Now intrepid indie Smog Veil, who've done yeoman work in documenting the late '60s-early '70s Northern Ohio musical underground (including releases by Stress and Schwartz) are releasing No Excuses, No Regrets, a compilation of studio, live, and home recordings that preserve the legacy of this exciting and expressive performer.

Imagine Mose Allison's gift for lyrical rumination wedded to the groove and improv facility of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band when Butter started employing jazz veterans for his horn-driven lineups and you'll get some idea of what's going on here. Jimmy was an entertainer first, and his bands -- most notably, Blues Idiom and the Coosa River Band -- were less raw than Mr. Stress's Chicago-styled outfit and less idiosyncratic than 15-60-75 The Numbers Band, who were evolving their own unique take on blues-based music in nearby Kent.
This isn't a museum piece; it's sweaty party music for working stiffs to drink and dance to. Just listen to the relentless propulsion behind Jimmy's extended harp solo on Tommy Brown's "Southern Women," or Rodger Collins' "She's Looking Good," which is tight as a patent leather shoe, with guitarist Alan Greene filling in for a full horn section. Jimmy's ear for obscure R&B gems also unearthed Johnny Fuller's "Mercy Mercy," which sports a topical lyric atop the deepest groove imaginable. The four-piece Coosa River Band also applied their stripped-down attack to a modern, "downtown" take on Don Nix's "Going Down" (which audiences of the time would have known via Freddie King or Jeff Beck's versions).
There's even an unlikely commercial appeal to some of the original material. Ley's signature song "Deborah" sounds, as its author admits in Nick Blakey's always exemplary liner notes, incongruously appropriate for Tom Jones, with plenty of guitar ornamentation from Greene. (Jimmy Ley spins a great yarn and has a phenomenal memory for detail. He's also brutally honest in his own self-assessment, owning up to the problems with ego and alcohol that eventually led to his departure from the music business.) "Something's Crawling" is a jazz-tinged statement of determination in the face of adversity, while the late night lament "Thank You" was inspired, Ley says, by seeing soulful Brit psych rockers Procol Harum at Detroit's Grande Ballroom.
My own favorite stuff here is the old-timey, "Down Home Jimmy" material: the rollicking original piano stomper "I Think Your Time Has Come," the raucous train song "The 413," and the one-man boogie-woogie band version of Gatemouth Brown's "You Got Money" that Ley cut for a WMMS "coffee break concert." Even the straight-ahead blues tracks here -- a long version of Otis Rush's "Checking On My Baby" that features guitarist Al Silver to good advantage, a take on Muddy Waters' "Tiger In Your Tank" with Jimmy on slash-and-burn slide, and Willie Dixon's "Spider In My Stew" with Jimmy playing both piano and harp -- posses an energy and spark that'll transport you from wherever you're hearing this music to a table in front of the bandstand of some '70s Rust Belt dive. And that's a compliment.

The Jeremy Edge Project For fans of Joe Bonamassa, Crobot and Candlelight Red! Former Candlelight Red guitarist Jeremy Edge is set to launch, The Jeremy Edge Project. Featuring guest performances by Brandon Yeagley (Crobot) and Brett Hestla (Dark New Day). After 4 top 50 Active Rock singles with Candlelight Red, he is breaking a long hiatus by releasing an album that is a departure stylistically with more blues based, guitar based rock. According to Edge, this project has been brewing for a while and came by accident as personnel changes mid-recording session prompted him to make some tough choices about moving forward and finishing the record as a solo artist. To get the album over the finish line, he decided to do some of the vocals himself for the first time, and enlist the help of some friends. "I always liked what Santana did years ago with using different singers and I love collaboration projects like ‘Postmodern Jukebox,’ so this was a fun an exciting idea for an album.” This album was recorded and mixed by Grammy nominated engineer Mike Feretti (Sevendust, Warren Haynes) in Ringwood, NJ - who has also worked with him in the past with Candlelight Red. On the stylistic direction, Jeremy says, "I have for years wanted to do something that puts me back in touch with my early influences - SRV, Hendrix, Billy Gibbons, Blackmore, Iommi, Page etc. But I did not want to do a retro album per se. I wanted this to be a melting pot of influences so there is some classic rock, blues, classic metal, and alternative. It's all there - along with Brandon and Brett bringing their unique vocals styles.”

Ike White “Ike White was a musical prodigy. Don’t worry if you haven’t heard of him: he slipped into obscurity as suddenly as he found fame. Eelco Gelling Eelco spent his childhood in Loosdrecht (where he moved in his first year of life). When he was eleven, his parents moved to Assen. Gelling became an apprentice photographer at the Asser Courant, where he was subsequently fired because of his long hair. He formed the Rocking Strings in the early 1960s with Nico Schröder (bass), Hans Kinds (rhythm guitar) and Wim Kinds (drums). After recruiting Harry Muskee (ex-double bassist of the Old Fashioned Jazz Group) as singer, the band name became Cuby + Blizzards. Muskee lived in a small farm in Grolloo, Drenthe, which the band used as a practice space.
C + B's first recordings did not contain blues but beat music (the band played in a style similar to the early Rolling Stones, and which was also referred to as R&B in the years 1964-1965). Gelling's guitar talent quickly stood out. On the fourth C + B single You don't know (1966), the band emerged as a real blues group with Gelling as an excellent soloist. Eelco's guitar playing also stands out on the first LP Desolation. At that time he played a Gibson ES 330. In 1967 he exchanged this guitar for a sunburst Gibson Les Paul guitar from 1960 (or 57/58) as also used by English blues guitarists such as Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor. Gelling's guitar sound changed immediately, as can clearly be heard on the LP Greetings from Grollo: the somewhat woolly tone of Desolation makes way for the razor-sharp Les Paul sound. A wonderful example of this can also be found on the b-side of the single Distant Smile, a cover of Don't know which way to go by Buddy Guy.
