Ally Venable Band - No Glass Shoes (2016)

                                                                  Ally Venable
The 17-year-old Texas female blues artist has a strong voice and a great range. We think she belts out impressively deep and powerful vocals, and her love for the blues totally shines through. Reaching over fifty years into the classic rock/blues past for inspiration and influence, Ally cites Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bonnie Raitt, and Joe Bonamassa among the blues experts she’s used to nurture her musical career. Latching on to the Fender Stratocaster as her instrument of choice will come as no surprise to any fan with the same influencers. Ally’s vocal characteristics make us think Debbie Davies a little bit. The guitar work is not on the Davies level yet, but clearly, she has a bright future as a vocalist and an instrumentalist.

Before the debut of No Glass Shoes, the talented young Houston native won the East Texas Awards Female Guitarist of the Year in 2015. For the last two years, she’s finished in the top ten of the under 20 categories at the Dallas International Guitar Festival. Barry Wallace on lead guitar/keys, 2015 Texas Bassist of the year Zach Terry, and self-taught drummer Elijah Owings makes up the rest of the band. They have been with her through much of her rising career.

Ally covers Bonnie Raitt with “Love Me Like a Man,” which is one of the only two covers on the album, the other being the Junior Wells classic “Messin with the Kid”.

The title track preludes with a bass melody setting the tone for the progression, and lends itself more toward the “rock side” of the blues-rock powerhouse that the Ally Venable Band is touted for.

The harmonica is prominently showcased in “Downhearted Blues,” which is one of our favorites on the new release. This one is sure to get the toes tapping with a euphonious rhythm, and a steady driving beat.

“Trainwreck Blues” picks up with a perky bass melody, leading into a classical blues chord sequence. Ally joins in with a sultry tone, and to us, it’s a pleasing vocal contribution that we think fans of female blues artist will appreciate.

It’s a quality body of work that offers inspiration and motivation for young, aspiring musicians. No Glass Shoes by the Ally Venable Band will not disappoint! americanbluesscene.com

Michael Katon - Rip It Hard! (1994) reposted

                                                                   Michael Katon

His fans call him 'The Boogie-Man From Hell'. Michael Katon from the village of Hell, Michigan USA stands for roadhouse boogie, a kind of rock and roll mixed with blues, rockabilly and country; actually he makes the kind of boogie that should be played with the volume on maximum.

Michael Katon started playing the guitar in 1965. After he had learned a few chords, he discovered and started studying the work of all great bluesmen and rock and roll pioneers and bought an old Telecaster with the loudest amplifier he could find. His greatest inspiration came from musicians like Otis Rush, Albert, B.B. and Freddie King, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elmore James.

From then on the young guitarist started playing anywhere people wanted to hear his brand of raw blues and rock and roll. In 1974, Michael moved to Los Angeles where he found that people were more into "disco-boogie" than into his type of boogie. He still managed to scratch out a living by playing in every "blues joint" he could find down the California coast line.

In 1977 he headed back home to the more fertile "boogie terrain" of the Midwest and formed a band for the purpose of recording songs for his first album. Various recording sessions were held in Chicago but the producer in charge could never capture the raw sound Michael was looking for. In order to capture that sound, he realized that he had to produce the recordings himself, so that's what he did. On a shoestring budget he bought some second hand recording equipment, assembled his own crude studio and set to work.
In 1984 Michael's first album "Boogie All Over Your Head" was released on his own Wild Ass Record label. The record received favourable reviews in a number of US music publications. A review by Cub Koda for Goldmine Magazine caught the attention of the Swedish record label, Garageland Records who released this pure boogie rock & roll album. In 1987 a second album "Proud To Be Loud" was released in Sweden. This hard edged blues and boogie album was well received and critical acclaim prompted British/French company Loop Records to offer a deal which paved the way for Michael's first overseas appearances. Michael Katon and his music survived his first 2 European record companies and signed to Provogue in 1993.

In March of that year Provogue released Michael Katon's third album "Get On The Boogie Train". On the thirteen tracks the artist stays true to playing the blues with raw energy, straight from the heart. Because "Proud To Be Loud" had only been limited available, it was re-released by Provogue in September 1993. The album, containing high energy blues 'n boogie again was remastered for this purpose.
The 1994 album "Rip It Hard" was, if possible, even heavier than the previous albums and helped him to establish further as one of the leading names in heavy blues. Spring 1996 saw the release of the album "RUB". Rock and roll boogie, loud and intense as always but on the second part of his last studio album Katon can also be heard accousticly in the slow blues track "The Devil's Daughter" and the Zeppelinish "Back Water Moon", while he received great critical acclaim for the compelling "Attack Of Badness", a boogie that reminds one to Prince.

Michael Katon toured Europe in 1998 and 1999 in support of his live album "Bustin' Up The Joint-Live" which was recorded in Howard's Club in Bowling Green, Ohio,. "The Rage Called Rock'n'Roll" is Michael's previous instalment in the musical saga of Michael Katon, the boogie man from Hell.

Signature Katon style is what you got yet Michael headed into new directions. Check out "Two Angels Flying", "Runaway Train" or "Jesus Wears Adidas". A jagged thread of tradition while breaking new ground. Pure Rock'n'Roll that beats from a blues heart as straight up as they come. "Bad Machine" is Michael Katon's 2002, 8th and it's a traditional Katon album. Check out the blues song "The Lost TV Clicker Blues" to boogie tracks like "The Pierced, Tattooed and Twenty Somethin' Boogie" and "The Detroit River Dirty Blues", this is one smokin'album.

"MK" is Katon's latest album released by Provogue Records in February '06. It featured 10 new hard & heavy blues rock songs in vintage Katon style. His sound is raw, mean and spirited, combining lowdown blues and boogie with the amped-up approach of the highest energy rock 'n' roll band you'd care to name.

DC Carnes - Delta Crossroads - Vol. II (2022)

                                                                      DC Carnes
DC Carnes was a member of the original Robert Lockwood Jr. All-Stars. On Delta Crossroads – Vol II, he pays homage to the greats in blues, in particular Mr. Robert.

His tribute is meant to look like a follow-up to the Grammy-winning 2000 album, Delta Crossroads. Carnes covers nine classic blues songs, including one (“I Got to Find Me a Woman”) written by Lockwood himself. Delta Crossroads – Vol II will be released on July 15, 2022, by Fishhead Records, the label that brought you Sylvain Sylvain, Wallace Coleman, and Bobby Messano, among others.

With Delta Crossroads – Vol. II, Carnes decided to give some attention to the musicians who molded his music career. “I just wanted to give a nod to some of the people who influenced me earlier in my career, and the guy who gave me my chance: Mr. Robert.”

When entering Cleveland’s Superior Sound Studios to lay down his own renditions of the tracks that inspired him at the beginning of 2022, it came so naturally that the record was finished within a matter of two days. “There was no rehearsal. We came together the first day and we got almost half the album done the first day. And we came back the second day and it was pretty much a mop-up,” explains Carnes.

Geoff Hartwell - Hate To See You Go (2009)

                                                                     Geoff Hartwell
Geoff Hartwell is still an almost unknown name in our country, but that will change very quickly because this man has a track record to beat you.

This American artist played the stars of heaven in the N.Y.C Scene at a very young age, and in the meantime also did the necessary session work, which resulted in the Loft Records Studios. There he also met Debbie Davis and decided to support her album as well. In between he made a piece of music for Discovery Chanel, which was really praised at the time and a contribution to Saturday Night Life as well as the promotion of strings and instruments. This man also regularly gave workshops with Sonny Landreth, and he has another 200 performances a year.

When you hear all this, I am amazed that this man is still little known here, while Landreth is held in high regard. Commentary from Sonny- “This is my hope for the future”, and other critiques : “Geoff has all the chops, and a lot of Soul,” and last but not least- “The best blues rock slide player, so lyrics like this don't lie. I must honestly say that I am also quite impressed by this guitar miracle, who plays beautiful songs in this second album and plays a part of Slide that gives you the shivers. If you're still not convinced after listening to this great album, check out a live recording of him, that's 10 times better, because this man can play.

Do you like the Allman Brothers or also Landreth, then this is your disc, and also for the Bluesrock fans this is a big promise I think. I hope that he will soon be taken in tow in the Netherlands by friend Sonny.

The new album is called “Hate To See You Go” and is a very variable album I can tell you, filled with very nice guitar licks and also contributions from very special guests like Sonny Landreth, but also Cindy Cashdollar on Lapsteel Guitar, and furthermore on baritone sax Dana Colley, no little boys at all I would say. Geoff has a good and very pleasant voice and as said he has a lot of Soul in his thunder, both in vocals and in his guitar playing, which by the way is much more than just slide, but beautiful acoustic things don't exclude this man either.

In addition to Geoff, the band consists of J.J. Clarke-drums-percussion, Rich Kelly-Bass, Chris Burke-organ, piano, and of course Geoff Hartwell- Guitar, slide guitar-vocals.

Opener “Tumbelina” is a nice rock song with excellent guitar work from Geoff together with Sonny, and it's good!!. Then hit the gas with “Drinking Bourbon Whiskey”, a top-notch Blues rocker. “Hate To See You Go” a Slow Blues ala Jazz, with nice chords in it and the sax of course, nice title track if you ask me. Another piece of variation in “Bar Fungul”-Funk it Out, “Summertime” in a completely original arrangement. Are Yoy Happy now , Country rock at its best, and those beautiful harmony vocals again. And then high caliber Slow Blues in “Honest”, which is also one of your favorite tracks.

In short, what a beautiful album, which deserves the necessary attention, and if I can do that, I certainly won't let it. For the sake of completeness I will also mention that he has already made an album for this. You can listen to both albums on cd-baby.com. We will be hearing a lot more about this! The closing is oh so beautiful again with the very expressive title "Water is Wide" moooiiii

King Bees - King Bees feat. the Greatest Blues Stars (2020)

                                                                      King Bees
The King Bees are Penny “Queen Bee” Zamagni and Rob “Hound Dog” Baskerville. In 1985 this North Carolina couple felt the draw that so many white novice Blues lovers have felt before them, to learn about the Blues direct from the source. Unlike the ethnomusicologist wanderings of the Lomaxes, the Bees wanted to play! King Bees Featuring the Greatest Blues Star is a document of their adventures, friendships and jamming. A compilation of live tracks from 1990 to 2010 the 11 cuts present most of the classic electric Blues styles with many of the lesser known masters.

Harp superstar Carey Bell and gravel voiced local legend Nappy Brown anchor the list of featured Blues greats. Harpists Jerry Mc Cain, Chicago Bob Nelson and Neal Pattman all lay it down while guitarists Chick Willis and Beverly “Guitar” Watkins offer clinics in emotive Blues string bending. Mostly in back up playing difference and occasionally stepping into the spotlight Queen Bee Zamagni on bass and vocals and Hound Dog Baskerville on guitar are stellar in keeping things swinging hard.

This record is traditional, 12- bar Blues forms played with conviction, zest and joy. Nappy Brown’s rendition of the Howlin’ Wolf classic “Natchez Burning” leaves it all on the floor and almost matches the Wolf’s manic power. Carey Bell is inventive and dynamic with his harp work especially on the Queen Bee penned and sung funk hop “Alcohol and Blues.” Jerry Mc Cain is also strong and tart on harp on Zamagni’s other self penned showcase “Run Your Reputation Down.” Zamagni sings with gusto in an old timey Sippie Wallace style.

Beverly “Guitar” Watkins is the revelation of this record. On her medium-slow tempo burner “Beverly’s Guitar Blues,” Watkins exhibits ferocious technique. Singing with a husky voice that feels like a cross between Koko Taylor and Big Mama Thornton, Watkins is an engaged entertainer scatting and admonishing the audience she draws them in and seamlessly entwines her guitar riffs with her singing a la Albert Collins.

The music of King Bees Featuring the Greatest Blues Stars is fun and consistently high quality. An important document of some inspired musicians and performances, this is a traditional romp through the foundations of electric Blues. We are lucky to have tour guides like the King Bees sharing their adventures and honoring these Blues Greats.

Bill Stuve - Say Man! (1996)

                                                                         Bill Stuve
AFTER 20 YEARS as the bass player for one of America's hardest working blues organizations (The Mighty Flyers) Bill Stuve needs little in the way of an introduction to followers of that musical genre. Stuve's unique "Dog House" String Bass Style has been on display in thousands of venues throughout America and the world. From smokey jazz clubs in every corner of the globe to world class appearances at the European sites like The North Sea Jazz Festival (Holland). The Stockholm (Sweden) Jazz Festival, The Belgium Rhythm & Blues Festival (Peer, Belgium), as well as major venues in Japan and Australia.

At home in the states, Bill has used the hectic touring schedule of the Mighty Flyers (Mention a blues club, blues concert or festival, and The Flyers have played it) to fine-tune his musical skills as a player, singer and songwriter. In 1990 he formed his own Upright/Allnight Productions and recorded his first solo album "Big Noise" (Tramp TRCD 9906).

Six years later, Stuve's “Say Man!” is a package of 14 jump and R&B tunes (five of which are Stuve originals). This album has an all star line up of west coast blues favorites including fellow Flyer Rick (L.A. Holmes) Holmstrom (guitar), along with appearances by harmonica ace Johnny Dyer sax players Big Jay McNeely, Jeff Turmes, Louis Taylor and Dave Moody, along with guitarist Joel Foy, and drummers Richard Innes and Jimi Bott. The vocals, string bass, and executive production chores were taken care of by Stuve himself along with producer Eddie Reed. The entire project was recorded in the “Live in the studio style of the early Chess and Sun Records” days. While he has no intention of giving up his “Day Job” with The Mighty Flyers, with “Say Man!”, Stuve has stepped back in the “Solo” spotlight for another minute or two.

An out of sight contribution from the West Coast, sure to get some bodies out there movin’

-- Robert Pierce Mercer, 1997

Just like his previous effort, Stuve continues in the same style of blues that's for partying and jiving. Standouts for honorable mention are from former William Clarke alum Joel Foy and Rick Holmstrom with their guitar support and Johnny Dyer with his Delta spun harp. Steve F'dor shines like newly polished furniture, especially on "Abracadabra" and "Your Love Burns Clean."

Hackensack - Give It Some (1996)

                                                                       Hackensack
Hackensack formed first in 1969 and its origins and ancestry are obscure, but by ’71 founder Nicky Moore (who later replaced Bruce Dickinson who had moved on to Iron Maiden as frontman in Samson) felt he had put the right band together and started touring heavily.

By 1972 they were playing well over 250 concerts a year non-stop across Britain and Europe. That year, Island released their first and only single, the non-album Moving On / River Boat. The single was produced by Muff Winwood, older brother of Steve (both ex-Spencer Davis Group), who later produced Dire Straits’ debut (’78) and the first hits of Sparks. He was also working as A & R at Island. Hackensack also supported label-mates Mott The Hoople on their Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus tour a few months earlier.

Polydor eventually released the first and only album in 1974: Up The Hardway. The LP is a mix of straight heavy boogie and ballads with quality vocals and guitar. The line-up was Nicky Moore (lead vocals, guitar, electric piano), Ray Smith (lead guitar, vocals), Paul Martinez (bass), and Simon Fox (drums, percussion). Smith was soon better-known as Ray Majors, changing his name to avoid confusion with the guitarist of another Island band, Albert Lee’s Heads, Hands & Feet. The album’s first CD release, allegedly under licence, was by the French re-issue company Red Fox Records in 2002.

Johnny Jenkins - All In Good Time (2000)

                                                                  Johnny Jenkins
Guitarist, singer, and songwriter Johnny Jenkins may have had a long pause between records, but his heart, ears, and mind were always close to blues music. Jenkins never wanted to be a professional musician, and always worked day jobs, including digging wells, logging, and mechanical work. Jenkins' style is, at times, reminiscent of , and at other times one can hear echoes of  in his guitar playing -- probably because Jenkins was a seminal influence on .

Born in Macon, GA in 1939, Jenkins grew up in a rural area called Swift Creek. He listened to a battery-powered radio and first heard the sounds of blues and classic R&B artists like , , and others. Jenkins built his first guitar out of a cigar box and rubber bands when he was nine, and began playing at a gas station for tips. He played it left-handed and upside down, and this practice continued after his older sister bought him a real guitar a couple of years later.

founder Phil Walden first heard Jenkins on a local radio talent show in 1959. Walden began to book Jenkins' band, the Pinetoppers, which included  on lead vocals.  got his first big break in 1962 when he drove Jenkins to Stax Studios in Memphis to record a follow-up to Jenkins' regional hit, "Love Twist." The producer encouraged the young  to take a turn at singing in the studio, and he recorded "These Arms of Mine" with some extra studio time. 's career began to take off and Jenkins was asked to become part of his band but he refused, ironically, because of his fear of air travel.

Following 's untimely demise in an plane crash, Jenkins stayed close to home, playing regionally and working day jobs to support his family. His unorthodox guitar style left lasting marks on the young, impressionable , who came out to see Jenkins play while visiting relatives in the Macon area. Later, in 1969, Jenkins and  teamed up to play together at The Scene, a club owned by Steve Paul in New York. In 1970, Walden put Jenkins into the studio with several members of  to record his debut album, Ton Ton Macoute, one of the fledgling  label's first releases. Although Ton Ton Macoute was finally released to high critical praise in 1972, the then-small label had other priorities to deal with, including the newly successful .

In 1996,  founder Walden convinced Jenkins to record a "comeback" album, Blessed Blues. He's backed by a stellar cast of musicians, including  on keyboards and Muscle Shoals percussionist Mickey Buckins.  also reissued Jenkins' now-legendary Ton Ton Macoute on compact disc in 1997. ~ Richard Skelly, Rovi

Big Rude Jake - Big Rude Jake (1999)

                                                                    Big Rude Jake
Like most neo-swing bands who gained a greater measure of commercial popularity in the late 1990s, Ontario's Big Rude Jake and his band had been living the style long before Swingers and Gap commercials. Like The Brian Setzer Ochestra, Cherry Poppin`Daddies, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Jake had been playing small clubs and bars for years, shaking up the swing with jazz, Cajun, rockabilly, and poetry.

Big Rude Jake (frontman, founder, and soul of the band) was a self-styled hepcat and a boisterous and entertaining live performer who espoused the cool cat aura of a true swing man. Hoping to ride the wave of rising Canadian bands in the 1990s, the group cut their first CD, Butane Fumes and Bad Cologne, in 1993 and toured all over Canada on the strength of their live shows. Despite their loyal following and regional notice in the American Midwest with the single "Swing Baby," the band quit the Canadian music business in 1997 and moved to New York, where the band quit on Jake.

With a new set of bandmates and a new record deal, Big Jake continued to tour with neo-swing headliners like Brian Setzer, and released a self-titled album in 1999. Mixing a variety of jazz-influenced styles from jump blues to swing to ragtime, the band boasted a crackerjack set of musicians, including Jake on acoustic guitar. Truly a student of jazz and its related folk and literary traditions, Jake infused his musical creations with vivid stories of imperfect cats and kittens tinged with dark irony, humor, and contemporary heartache. Big Rude Jake (aka Andrew Jacob Hiebert) died on June 16, 2022 from cancer of the bladder. He was 59 years old. Theresa E. LaVeck, Rovi.

Eric's Bluesband - Rolling Avenue (2022)

                                                                Eric's Bluesband
What does it take to stand out if your chosen field of music happens to be the blues? Couldthe answerbe as simple as; Great songs, a truckload of experience and a passion that goes way beyond what you’ll find in your regular blues trio performing in the neighborhood bar every weekend?
In the case of Swedish blues veteran Eric Hansson that IS the simple answer because he’s got all of that and more. With 25 years of experience playing clubs and festivals in Scandinavia, US and the European mainland and releasing records Eric has learned his craft the one and only way possible: The hard way.

Those who have experienced Eric’s Blues Band on a stage know that this is a man who always means business no matter if he’s performing on a small stage in a “one horse town” oron a big stage playing for thousands of people.

No wonder that he has shared the stage with legendary artists like Alan Haynes, Claes Yngström, Jimmy Zavala, Mats Ronander, Rockin’ Johnny, Dave Potter, Aki Kumar and Slidin’ Slim because when he digs down into an intense solo his playing is second to none. Eric`s Blues Band has also played as warm up act to artistssuch as Joe Bonamassa, Dave Hole and Nationalteatern.

On the new album “Rolling Avenue” Eric has gathered a stellar line up of the best possible musicians from the Swedish blues scene as well as prominent guests like Jerry Portnoy (Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton) and Alan Haynes (legendary guitarslinger from Texas).

Prepare for a fabulous mix of the best rocking blues you’ve heard in a long time.

Screamin' Jay Hawkins - Lawdy Miss Clawdy (1979)

                                                               Screamin' Jay Hawkins
Screamin' Jay Hawkins was the most outrageous performer extant during rock's dawn. Prone to emerging out of coffins on-stage, a flaming skull named Henry his constant companion, Screamin' Jay was an insanely theatrical figure long before it was even remotely acceptable.

Hawkins' life story is almost as bizarre as his on-stage schtick. Originally inspired by the booming baritone of Paul Robeson, Hawkins was unable to break through as an opera singer. His boxing prowess was every bit as lethal as his vocal cords; many of his most hilarious tales revolve around Jay beating the hell out of a musical rival.

Hawkins caught his first musical break in 1951 as pianist/valet to veteran jazz guitarist Tiny Grimes. He debuted on wax for Gotham the following year with "Why Did You Waste My Time," backed by Grimes & His Rockin' (they donned kilts and tam o' shanters on-stage). Singles for Timely ("Baptize Me in Wine") and Mercury's Wing subsidiary (1955's otherworldly "[She Put The] Wamee [On Me]," a harbinger of things to come) preceded Hawkins' immortal 1956 rendering of "I Put a Spell on You" for Columbia's OKeh imprint.

Hawkins originally envisioned the tune as a refined ballad. After he and his New York session aces (notably guitarist Mike Baker and saxist Sam "the Man" Taylor ) had imbibed to the point of no return, Hawkins screamed, grunted, and gurgled his way through the tune with utter drunken abandon. A resultant success despite the protests of uptight suits-in-power, "I Put a Spell on You" became Screamin' Jay's biggest seller ("Little Demon," its rocking flip, is a minor classic itself).

Hawkins cut several amazing 1957-1958 follow-ups in the same crazed vein -- "Hong Kong," a surreal "Yellow Coat," the Jerry Leiber/Mie Stoller-penned "Alligator Wine" -- but none of them clicked the way "Spell" had. DJ Alan Feed convinced Screamin' Jay that popping out of a coffin might be a show-stopping gimmick by handing him a $300 bonus (long after Feed's demise, Screamin' Jay Hawkins was still benefiting from his crass brainstorm).

Hawkins' next truly inspired waxing came in 1969 when he was contracted to Philips Records (where he made two albums). His gross "Constipation Blues" wouldn't garner much airplay, but remained an integral part of his legacy for quite a while.

The cinema was a beneficiary of Screamin' Jay's larger-than-life persona in later years. His featured roles in Mystery Train and A Rage in Harlem made Hawkins a familiar visage to youngsters who never even heard "I Put a Spell on You." He died February 12, 2000 following surgery to treat an aneurysm; Hawkins was 70. ~ Bill Dahl, Rovi
