Chick Hall Jr. - Nuke the Juke (2010)

                                                               Chick Hall Jr.
The Washington DC Area has always had great guitar players for as long as I can remember. We have been spoiled, really, to be able to walk around the block to the local Legion Hall, teen club, or bar and have our minds blown by Danny Gatton, Roy Buchanon, Bobby Parker, Bill Kirchen, Bo Diddley, Link Wray, Roy Clark or Chick Hall (both Senior and Junior). More than just great players, they were/are stylists, innovators and risk takers. Some of them shaped and changed popular music way, way beyond whatever compensation and credit they received. Most of them were stay-at-home family men who watched, passively, as younger, flashier looking musicians latched on to their ideas and ran to the bank with them. It’s an old story. This is Chick Hall Jr’s first album under his own name, and yet he has been playing guitar for fifty years. Like his dad he can play in many different styles of music and burns on jazz, rock, country and blues. On this CD he is backed by, essentially, an R&B band. His father played and arranged for country combos for more than fifty years but never had a commercial recording to his name. When DC native Jimmy Dean asked him to come to New York in 1962 to lead the band on his weekly TV network music show, Chick, Sr turned him down to tend to his own night club he had opened in 1955. “Chick Hall’s Surf Club” is still open to this day. In 1960, after being bested in a guitar jam session, jazz/bossa guitarist Charlie Byrd asked him, “Why are you wasting your time playing country?” Hall’s response: “Well, I’m working steadier than you.” So, to my mind, Chick Hall Sr started the tradition of great guitarists from the DC Area. He also
taught his son a thing or two. Chick Hall Jr joined his first rock group at age 13, went on to form the “Magestic Neons” and played the usual teen clubs, parties and rock bars. The Neons actually yielded a 45 RPM on the Unicorn label for Elliot Ryan, but, like his dad, Hall Jr eventually gravitated to country music under the employ of Ronnie Dove, Johnny Lee, Lori Morgan and Ace Cannon. For the past twenty years Chick has led his own trio or quartet in the Rock or Country genre, usually at the Surf Club. But, also like his dad, he loves to really let loose on a fiery jazz solo if the song calls for it. A Chick off the old block?

Tinsley Ellis - Fanning The Flames (1989)

                                                               Tinsley Ellis
Fanning the Flames is an erratic but impressive set from Tinsley Ellis. While his basic sound is indebted to Stevie Ray Vaughan, the guitarist borrows from every other major blues artist. Furthermore, he has a tendency to overplay his licks, giving the album a feeling of unfocused fury. That sound can be overwhelming, though; his technique is impressive, even if he doesn't know when to reign it in. As a consequence, Fanning the Flames may not be of interest to general listeners, but for guitar fans, there's plenty of music here to treasure.

Abstract - Winning Hand (2003)

                                                                  Abstract
Abstract draws its influences from such groups as The Meters, Jonny "Guitar" Watson, Rick James, Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Gaters, and Fourplay. These Influences keep Abstract grounded in its New Orleans roots, but incorporates other distinct styles, such as jazz, heavy rock and country guitar riffs, which make Abstract distict from other New Orleans Based Groups.

Three Souls In My Mind - Blues Del Eje Vial (1980)

                                                      Three Souls In My Mind

THE BLUES OF THE ROAD AXIS, which we could define as the third single of 12 inches of the group, since it only includes six music. Curiously, we could say that for this album only four songs were recorded, the three on the A side and the first on the B side, because "The Blues of the Tire" would have been "the one left over" from the album "Qué Rico Diablo" because it has the same alignment of musicians (Lora, Mancera, Hauptvogel and Silvestre Méndez, Luis Rosas and Arturo Lavastida -SIC-, the last ones in congas, piano and sax, respectively), and "Grandfather", as the material says, was the "First recording of the Three Souls in My Mind, made in 1968 as a test for Swan Records", and were Lora on the guitar and voice, Charlie on the chair, Ernesto de León on the requinto, Lalo Toral on the piano, and Miguel Flores (El Flaco) on bass and harmonica. Quite prominent and characteristic are the cover and back cover of this LP, courtesy of J. Arturo Ramírez, the same one who drew the band in "Qué Rico Diablo", and where we see the Trisols in a classic ship, about to be overwhelmed by a tram on the Axis 999 South route, commanded by a werewolf, or coyote, or jackal, who knows. Ahead of them, a car that shows the tail carries the 00-MEVALE INFLUENT PLATE, and the sign of the rear defense of a cargo truck allows to read "Goris de Peralvillo". The advertisements in the buildings allude to the brand of cigarettes "Tokes", to a soda called "Coma-Caca", and incidentally is that of "Swan Raff Records. The sound of the decade". One more sign that says "Soon the road axis here" is placed on what was the Three Souls Club, halfway down. On the back cover there is a somewhat suspicious woman, perhaps of the gallant life, and a briago lying on the sidewalk, also observing some collapsed buildings, and on one of the walls a heart flecked with the legend "A and S", where someone added by afuerita "and C". In my opinion, with all its lyrics I should say "Alex and Sergio ... and Charlie". The disc is dated 1979, but the LP says 1980, the same as the artist's signature on the cover.

Marc Tee - Lights On! (2001)

                                                                  Marc Tee
This record tends to get rave reviews and Tee stands out by singing and playing the blues so intensely that listeners quite frequently mistake him for a black, blues-shouter from times long gone. "Marc Tee, blues guitarist extraordinaire, newly arrived from Belgium, knocked the house down with his fat sound "He is a strong guitar player and a great songwriter, ...his voice, which sounds as black as can be, is his secret weapon. He swings like the greatest blues shouters." -No Ho News. In addition, his regular 6-piece band contains some of the finest blues-players on the scene. We're particularly fond of the sax blowing. One of the most innovative guys we know.

The Sensational Barnes Brothers - Nobody's Fault But My Own (2019)

                                                The Sensational Barnes Brothers
Bruce Watson produced the Sensational Barnes Brothers, at Delta-Sonic Sound studios in Memphis. With siblings Chris and Courtney Barnes on vocals, the album features contributions from R&B singer Liz Brasher, guitarist Will Sexton, Jimbo Mathus (Squirrel Nut Zippers) on organ, and others. (The duo has a formidable family history, too: Raised in the church on heaping doses of gospel and soul music, their mother Deborah was one of Ray Charles' Raelettes.) The songs on the album are covers of sides recorded originally on Designer Records, including songs first cut by the Memphis Spiritual 4, the Spiritual Harmonizers and the Fantastic Gospel Travelers.

Compared to the original recording of "I Am Trying To Go Home," by Delta gospel legends O'Neal and The Dean Brothers, the Barnes Brothers deliver their update with a vibrant and punchy horn arrangement on top of a thick soulful groove. On it, Chris and Courtney and the band lay down a funky Southern Saturday night vibe, only to wake up to church on Sunday morning.

While the recently recorded debut by The Sensational Barnes Brothers sounds as if it were recorded in the '70s, the Elizabeth King and The Gospel Souls record Watson is releasing actually was.

"While she recorded a bunch of songs, King never released a full album on D-Vine," says Watson. He managed to get his hands on the one-hundred-plus songs recorded for the label, "and from it," Watson says, "we decided to take everything she recorded for the label and made this record out of it. Only four songs have ever been released. The rest of it has never been out."

Below, listen to "Stretch Out," a guitar fueled stomper that has a Chuck Berry-styled "Maybelline" riff which drives King's powerful vocals and the song's soulful harmonies.

Dave Kelly - When The Blues Come To Call (1994)

                                                                 Dave Kelly
If there is such a thing as a British 'blues pedigree', then Dave Kelly sets the standard. Kelly is a blues craftsman - a journeyman who has served his time with the best. In New York he jammed with Muddy Waters. He became a friend to Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker, who both felt the benefit of Dave's playing in their touring bands. It was Dave's big sister, the late Jo-Ann Kelly, who first opened his ears to the blues, although his passion for rock and roll, and especially the work of Buddy Holly, remains intact. Dave is, of course, at the front of this super work, but his supporting crew (including John Hammond and Chuck Leavall) fleshes out the sound in fine fashion.

Rick Gauthier - She Loved Angels (2002)

                                                              Rick Gauthier
This is not Rick first album. He has got a few under his belt but I must say this is one of the best I heard so far. All the songs have been honed and polished the best Rick could with his limited budget and gear. This album is dedicated to his wife who passed away last year due to cancer.

Rick's musical training started at the age of ten singing in a symphony boy's choir and later on learning to play the guitar, bass and some keyboard. Since this humble beginning some thirty years ago, Rick has performed as a front man and songwriter in numerous bands. These groups have performed original music and/or covered top 40 music, classic rock, hard rock, rock, pop rock, country, blues, some standard jazz, and rhythm and blues, even some french songs in Canada, Quebec.

Tongue And Groove - Tongue And Groove (1969)

                                                          Tongue And Groove
Formed toward the end of the 1960s, Tongue and Groove was an interesting blues-rock outfit that was in some respects an offshoot of the Charlatans in that it included Hughes and that band’s original piano player (and one the first Haight-Ashbury scenesters) Mike Ferguson, who also did the album’s cover artwork. The group was completed by competent guitarist Randy Lewis, and they recorded their eponymous LP with a host of session musicians, apparently including Charlatans bassist Richard Olsen on some tracks. Dismissed as “fair” by some, Tongue and Groove is certainly no masterpiece, but for those who like West Coast rock with a strong roots influence, this is still mighty fine and definitely worth a listen. Admittedly, the cuts where Ferguson is lead singer – “Mailman’s Sack,” “The Shadow Knows” (which is actually better than the version he did with the Charlatans), “Motorhead Baby,” and “Fallin’ Apart” (written by one-time Charlatans bandmate Dan Hicks) – are inferior what with his comparatively flat vocals, although the musicianship of the instrumentalists does not necessarily suffer on any of these. If nothing else, “Sack” can be enjoyed as a studio mini-jam, for example. However, the tracks with Hughes at the helm are absolutely superb and evidence that white musicians can occasionally do some wonderful things when reinterpreting the blues. “Devil” is a gender-inverted cover of Skip James’ “Devil Got My Woman” and imaginatively reworks the arrangement used for her earlier version recorded with The Charlatans in 1966. “Come on in My Kitchen” features considerably different lyrics than Robert Johnson’s original as well as some heavenly dobro from James Burton. “Cherry Ball” seems to be based on Mance Lipscomb’s rendition of this song, and the consensus among most critics is that this is the album’s best performance. I’d have to agree, especially when one considers Hughes’ sultry vocals, Lewis’ ringing guitar lines, Ferguson’s barrelhouse-derived piano fills, and the rhythm section’s snappy time signatures. This is white blues at its best. “Sidetrack” is another revisitation of a piece previously done with the Charlatans, this time a big band interpretation of a Jimmy Rodgers tune where the horn section actually adds to the performance instead of detracting from it. “Duncan & Brady” is a nice take on the old cowboy song that apparently had been a staple in Hughes’ sets at the Red Dog, while “Rocks for My Pillow” may have been something she had learned from Brownie McGhee during her coffeehouse singing days.

Hughes went on to do an album under her own name, Freeway Gypsy, as well as becoming a vocalist for Stoneground, although Tongue and Groove and her work with the Charlatans remain her career high points.

Little Cooper and the Drifters - Baby, I'm Back (1995)

                                                   Little Cooper and the Drifters
A veteran harpist of the St. Louis scene, Timothy "Little" Cooper recorded a single in 1959 and then spent the better part of the next three decades away from music, driving a cement truck to earn his living. In 1995, he finally recorded his debut album and the results are worth the wait. Baby, I'm Back consists entirely of originals -- some were co-written -- and Cooper proves that not only is he a sultry harpist, he's a skillful songwriter and an engagingly smooth vocalist. The Drifters are as entertaining, particularly Cooper's brothers Glen and Gene. Glen weaves some great lead lines on his guitar and Gene is a wonderfully laidback pianist, comping and taking solos with equal skill.

Gennaro Porcelli - Alien in Transit (2013)

                                                          Gennaro Porcelli
In 2013, Alien in transit was released, the second album by one of the best Italian blues guitarists, Gennaro Porcelli. Alien in Transit is the name by which, in America, pass prisoners are called. An album that hides an incredible story.

A work of international scope that relies on the collaboration of the likes of: Mark Epstein, Andj J Forest, Ricky Portera, Enzo Gragnaniello, Ronnie Jones, Rudy Rotta. "I put aside the 'chitarrismo' - explains Gennaro Porcelli - to make room for the arrangements, gathering the ideas of the last few years, always with a firm footing in the Blues tradition".

Eight songs in which the unpublished works of the Neapolitan guitarist (I'm Here, La Giostra, Slim's Walk, Immigration Man) blend well with the personal re-readings of classics such as Woman Across The River by F. King, sung here by Ronnie James, It Takes a Lot To Lough It Takes a Train To Cry by Bob Dylan, Dallas by J. Winter. In the album also an intense version of L´erba cattiva by Enzo Gragnaniello sung by the Neapolitan singer-songwriter. Gennaro Porcelli, in addition to accompanying Edoardo Bennato for ten years, is on the road with his project Gennaro Porcelli And Higway 61.

David Anthony - Tiger in the Tank (2010)

                                                              David Anthony
This project reflects my slide guitar alter-ego, Delta Dave. While it started out a s a platform for showcasing my slide guitar work... a wonderful thing happened (actually, a lot of them) on the way to completion. When I engaged a wonderful producer (Ari Mendes) I was given artistic license and freedom to concentrate on the music. When we were done we wound up with well crafted tunes, lyrics I can sing with pride, a positive overall message, some GREAT performances by wonderful friends/musicians, a distinctive "sound" and overall some smokin' tunes!!! Listen to it and see for yourself why this really might be the best blues-rock album you've heard in years! D.A.
Rockin' Bluesy Originals lots of open G tuning bottleneck slide over some well-crafted rootsy blues/rock tunes.

GasOrleans - Det hele er fjong (2019)

                                                               GasOrleans
Welcome to Funky New Orleans and Gasolin's legendary songs. New Orleans is quite a city in the southern United States. After all, that's where it all comes from. But it is so much more than a place. First and foremost, it has become a picture of everything we seek for in life: joy, passion, creativity.

It's not just a bell that rings when you say New Orleans. It's a whole series of images of music, party, dance, magic, sex and warmth that fades out.

This is also the case for most Danes when you say Gasolin '. Their music is something in common, a legacy we Danes share. The idea of merging New Orleans music and party with Gasolin 'came when I realized that Rabalderstræde is practically in New Orleans. How would that song sound if played by a group of funky musicians from the city?

From there, the road lay open. I'd like to introduce you to an evening of Gasolin's songs, played by The New Orleans way by the most cool and swinging musicians ever. You can sing along from the first pitch and the dance floor is all over the room. Welcome. Let's give it GAS

J.T. Red - Smokn' Cat Blues (1996)

                                                                  J.T. Red
"A great blues player. Hell! a great guitar player period. Who's songs and style cover many blues stylings. JT sounds like a true veteran of each style he plays. There's even a beautiful latin acoustic song that was featured on HBO/CINEMAX. The thing I noticed most when I first heard JT's music. Was the emotion and conviction, with which he plays. But, yea he can smoke too! With a band tighter than a tupperware seal. And the sultry vocals of Tammy Stuckey. This is some "red" hot music".

Diana Braithwaite - Gold Cadillac (2019)

                                                             Diana Braithwaite
Diana Braithwaite is an authentic singer who has surfaced in the 2000s as not only a fine contemporary female vocalist, but one of very few Canadian based blues women. Born into a musical family in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Braithwaite's relatives from her mothers side arrived in the north country from the southern United States via the underground railroad. Her father was born Montreal, and faced discrimination and difficulty finding the kind of work he desired, eventually riding his bicycle collecting scrap metal, before the family was given an acre of rocky land to farm in the Glenallen area. She gravitated to singing by listening to acoustic, Delta style blues or country & western recordings. Her first group experience was with brothers Victor and Cecil and sister Charlane's band, while a breakaway solo career came about in her teenage years. Opening for John Lee Hooker at the Brunswick House in Toronto with the Chaser Blues Band, Braithwaite introduced her talent as a professional blues singer. Later on, Albert Collins invited Braithwaite on the road as a warm-up act for his band, then she followed up with collaborations including guitarists Mel Brown and Jeff Healey, and Eddy Clearwater, T-Model Ford, Robert Cray, Tracy Chapman, Big Bill Morganfield, Pinetop Perkins, and Buddy Guy. In 1999, Braithwaite was chosen by Sarah McLachlan to open the Canadian version of Lilith Fair. As a solo artist, she recorded the album Carry My Name, and teamed with guitarist/cornetist/harmonicist Chris Whiteley to produce the acclaimed duet CDs Morning Sun (2007) and Night Bird Blues (2009,) both for the Electro-Fi label, tributes to vintage rural acoustic blues music of the 1930s and '40s. She is a recipient of the African-American Women In The Arts Award in Chicago, IL, while her original blues songs "Bad Luck Man" and "Blame It on the Bourbon" were featured on the soundtrack for the Gemini-award winning film Gracie, which received the Yorkton Golden Sheaf Award for Best Musical Score.

                                                                Aleks Sever
The album, an electrifying work that combines Sever’s compositional brilliance with the energy of hip-hop and excitement of early electric jazz, is an inspiring collection of 10 original songs that spotlight her funk/rock-driven approach to the guitar.

Her style, which is best described as aggressive, showcases a huge range of influences, from Miles Davis to Tupac and 50 Cent. Picture all that—with killer guitar solos thrown in.
