Stephen Dale Petit - Guitararama (2007)
Stephen Dale Petit
“Welcome to the New Blues Revolution. Move over Clapton, here comes the new Blues God! New Blues guitarist Stephen Dale Petit re-issues his 2007 blues-feast Guitararama and thank goodness he has.
Some people believe they were born to do a job. Inside the CD booklet, Stephen Dale Petit says, “The reason I’m on the planet is to play Blues Guitar”. With the re-release of Guitararama, this 40 year old Californian gets a second shot at unleashing his digital dexterity on an unsuspecting UK and European audience. The album was funded by busking in the London Underground and was originally only available at the Underground, so now it gets a serious step-up.
In his teens he was inspired by the likes of the three Kings – Albert, Freddie and BB as well as Elmore James, Tampa Red and Leadbelly. He was also fascinated by the British Blues Boom of the 60’s and 70’s which featured the likes of Alexis Korner, Jimmy Page, Peter Green, Eric Clapton and Mick Taylor (Rolling Stones), as well as bands like Cream, Led Zeppelin, The Animals, Fleetwood Mac and The Yardbirds.
Now, some might argue that Guitararama is not a pure Blues album per say, because there are (undeniable) crossover elements belonging to Rock. In actual fact, it encompasses both – neatly woven together in a subtle way. With Guitararama Petit has successfully managed to enlighten us of the sheer breadth within the blues genre. There’s no doubt about one thing though: this guy can play, impressively, and you only need to check the Page-Hendrix-like solo on a cover of Bill Withers’ Ain’t No Sunshine for evidence of his dexterity.
From the get-go he’s keen to let us hear his talents on the wailing instrumental Sacramento. Alexis Korner Says is more in the BB King mould – a chugging R&B number with delicious picks and licks. Then the hammer of the Gods arrives – Crack Whore – a rockin’ monster complete with wailing solos. 10 Year Reflections, Told You So and Pure owe much to Gary Moore’s laidback blues from the early 90s – think Still Got The Blues For You. Somewhere in there are hues of Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, with whom Petit has played, and then with Percy’s Thumb there are strong Led Zep overtones. Purists will probably lap up 69 Duke Street – Petit’s performance is mesmerising.
For a monster riff, you need look no further than the ballsy 7 Cent Cotton which, again, gives Zep, or Page more accurately, a massive wink. 10 Year Blues is a lush MOR blues ballad again reminiscent of Gary Moore. The hammer returns for out-and-out rocker Blues From Mars – frenetic stuff – all blood, sweat, and more sweat.

Eddie 9V - Capricorn (2023)
Eddie 9V
It’s not often that anyone fulfills a lifelong dream – let alone recording an album at one of the most important studios in the history of American music. But that’s exactly what Eddie 9V, one of the most distinctive voices in the world of soul-blues, achieved with this disc, which was captured at the former Capricorn Records and delivers a feel that will put a smile on the face of anyone old enough to have lived through that era.
Eddie – aka Brooks Mason – is truly an old soul in a young body, a melismatic tenor and multi-instrumentalist who’s held in the same light by critics as his fellow Atlanta native and his childhood idol, Sean Costello, the two-time Blues Blast Music Awards honoree and five-time BMA nominee who left us at age 28 more than a decade ago. And, like Eddie’s stage name suggests, his performances are electrifying.
Currently in his mid-20s, Eddie grew up adoring the music captured decades before his birth in Macon – albums by the Allman Brothers, Percy Sledge, Wet Willie, Delbert McClinton, Otis Redding, James Brown and many others. At the time, however, recording there was a fantasy because the studio had been abandoned since the label’s demise in 1983. Fortunately for music lovers everywhere, however, that changed in the early 2010s when the good folks at Mercer University took up the cause to revitalize it, a feat they along with a consortium of three different foundations finally accomplished in 2019.
Finally, Eddie got his chance – and this sensational CD is the result.
This disc was produced by Eddie’s brother, Lane Kelly, who co-wrote the nine originals with another sibling, Brooks Kelly. Eddie 9V handles vocals and guitar throughout and switches off on bass with Lane throughout and/or handles drums on six of the 11 tracks. Chad Mason and Spencer Pope provide keyboards in a lineup that also includes Noah Sills, Daniel Wytanis and Justin Golding on horns, Cody Matlock and Dusty McCook on six-string, Aaron Hambrick and Tony Erice on percussion and Leah Bell Faser and Chelsea Shag on backup vocals.
“Beg Borrow and Steal,” opens the action with Eddie vowing to do anything necessary to track down and win the hand of the woman who previously professed her love for him and he’d found himself incapable of expressing his adoration back. Deeply soulful and as blue as can be, it yields to the funky “Yella Alligator.” Delivered from the amphibian’s perspective, it praises the virtue of life in bayou instead of the city, where everyone’s living a lie.
The feel continues with a cover of “’Bout to Make Me Leave Home.” It’s a welcome reworking of a 1977 hit for Bonnie Raitt that was penned by Hi Records tunesmith-turned-minister Earl Randle, and problems in romance continue in the original, “Are We Through,” in which Eddie discovers his lady cheating with another man.
The tempo quickens and theme continues in “How Long” before “It’s Going Down” announces their relationship has finally come to an end. Four months later, the woman’s already hooked up with the new guy and Eddie’s still looking back in remorse and hanging on to the morsels of what she left behind in “Tryin’ to Get By.” The mood finally brightens with a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Down Along the Cove,” which celebrates meeting up with a true love at the waterside.
Built on the framework of an old gospel number, “Mary Don’t You Weep” adopts a thoroughly modern, improvised feel as it takes listeners to church before old feelings resurface in “Missouri” a plaintive request by the singer to return to the place he found his “used to be” – and a thousand miles away from his lady’s door and yelling to the heavens: “Let me in!” The disc closes with the aptly titled “I’m Lonely,” which expresses sorrow and regret but still looks forward to the time of a reunion because “I love you just as much as when I kissed you that first day.”
Sure, Capricorn’s a roller coaster with heartbreak at every dip of the ride, but for blues lovers, it’s definitely a trip you’ll take over and over again. Eddie 9V’s a treasure, and this CD is, too! Blues Blast Magazine.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds - Roll of the Dice (1995)
The Fabulous Thunderbirds
The Fabulous T-Birds' second album without Jimmie Vaughan is an improvement over Walk That Walk, Talk That Talk, featuring a tighter, more focused band and hotter playing. Nevertheless, the band takes a couple of missteps, particularly with a limp version of "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah."

Denys Lable - Dédoublé (2022)
Denys Lable
Lovers of beautiful blues guitars won't miss it: “Dédoublé” is made for them. Even better, the album quickly proves to be essential for all those who revere the soft and timeless pauses imposed by Denys Lable. Between a jazz atmosphere and languid blues, the two men (Christian Padovan on bass) practice the greatest art of major musical events. To complete the exercise, they invited some big names to sing such as Francis Cabrel, the late Patrick Verbeke and Olivier Constantin.

Christone Kingfish Ingram - Live In London (2023)
Christone Kingfish Ingram
The electric blues guitar boss -- only in his early twenties at the time of this release -- Christone "Kingfish" Ingram brought his tight quartet to London's Garage on June 6, 2023, for a standing-room-only crowd. Live in London, the guitar slinger's third album for Alligator, appeared just three months later. It's a beautifully recorded, incendiary gig captured in the moment. The 17-track program is equally split between selections from his first two albums: 2019's Kingfish and 2021's 662, plus new tunes and a cover.
Kingfish leaves plenty of room for spontaneity live. Set opener "She Calls Me Kingfish" is introduced by DeShawn Alexander's reverbed, floating Rhodes piano that's replaced by a Hammond B-3 organ before Paul Rogers' bumping bassline and Chris Black's drum kit establish a funky shuffle. Ingram's playing crisscrosses jazz, prog rock, soul, and blues before it's time to solo. In contrast, his biting Stratocaster delivers a strolling break that melds the phrasing of B.B. King and Jimmy Johnson with an innate, deeply personal lyricism. Over seven minutes, its dynamic and intensity shift several times, drawing the enthusiastic crowd in. "Fresh Out" is even longer, a slow, wrangling, Chicago blues, it offers locked-on group interplay even during the solos by Ingram and Alexander. The tempo remains relatively laid-back through the poignant soul blues of "Another Life Goes By." (Interestingly, one can hear the influence of Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson in the melody and lyric.) Michael "Iron Man" Burks' "Empty Promises" is Hendrixian in invention, drama, and tension. Its loss-laden lyric is underscored by the B-3 and sets a perfect frame for Ingram's arrestingly soulful singing on top. The nasty, gritty "Hard Times" is a keyboard and rhythm collision that Ingram elevates with his hip vocals and distorted wah-wah soloing. "Mississippi Night" is a previously unissued scorching ten-minute instrumental that puts all of Ingram's considerable improvising skills on display. The middle section offers two solo acoustic Delta jams. "Been Here Before" is an autobiography and tribute to his grandmother with canny fingerpickinging and percussive strumming. The other -- "Something in the Dirt" -- is also a testifying autobiography of person and place set to a celebratory I-IV-V shuffle with killer turnarounds. The second half commences with the swaying blue soul of "You're Already Gone," driven by B-3 as Ingram testifies with conviction in his vocal. His solo adds depth, dimension, and power. While "Rock 'n' Roll" remains a deeply moving tribute to his late mother complete with gospel overtones, "Not Gonna Lie" combines blues, funk, and rootsy rock in a personal manifesto. "Midnight Heat," another new song, is snarling and potent, as Ingram's lyric offers intimacy to a lover with a loose groove that crisscrosses electric Southern blues and Meters-esque R&B. Closer "662" is bursting with the uptempo dancehall Texas groove of Albert King, the Vaughan Brothers, and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Live in London provides more evidence that Ingram is a force to be reckoned with: Not only can he play like the legends, but he's an original vocalist, a solid songwriter, and a disciplined bandleader. David Denny - Diesel Harmonics (1991)
David Denny
David Denny's 'Diesel Harmonics' is a collection of four-guitar compositions, drawn from David's the real life experiences and observations as a singer, guitarist and songwriter. David is joined by bass player ANDERS RUNDBLAD from WIRETRAIN and SHERYL CROW, and on drums PRAIRIE PRINCE of 'THE TUBES, PAUL KANTNER'S STARSHIP. XTC and CHRIS ISAAC'. Prairie is also the art director for this project and all five of the scheduled Diesel Harmonics album releases. David is the author of the STEVE MILLER BAND'S hit song, 'The Stake' (aka 'Nobody Loves You Like The Way I Do') from the album 'Book of Dreams,' and 'Greatest Hits' albums, and author of 'Circle of Fire' from the Steve Miller Band's 'Wide River.' David includes his performance of 'Circle of Fire' on the Diesel Harmonics release. Other cuts include 'It's Over,' 'Put The Night Away,' 'Down To The Bottom,' and 'Tumbling Down.' There is also a special Diesel Harmonics interactive version, released by I Can Play That. It contains two standard cassettes which, through the use of the listener's stereo cassette deck and system balance knob, allows the isolation of the four individual guitar parts from the other instruments. This allows the listener to pick up a guitar and join the band by playing along with any of the guitar parts. Reactions to the interactive version: 'Very impressive concept CD, great groove music with excellent guitar ideas... fine song crafting in the spirit of Little Feat and Steve Miller.' - DAVID SCHWARTZ, Editor in Chief, Mix Magazine 'This guy's written hits for Steve Miller and is a finger pickin' lickin' tasty axesmith.'- CHIP ZNUF, Arista recording artist 'David Denny is the first artist to inspire me to consider a music career and he personally made it happen for me. Rik Meijer
Rik grew up in Bildt, Friesland, where Frisian blues legend Shakey Sam also lived. After seeing Shakey perform as a boy on a colorful night in the village, the seed was planted to learn to play the guitar.
Listening to the Beatles frequently sparked his love for making music even more. Rik quickly stood out for his talent and willpower to master the guitar. He played in local bands in his youth.
The extravagant two-meter-tall blonde and curly hair later graduated from the Groningen Conservatory.
He has not gone unnoticed on the music scene, which has resulted in an excellent track record as a rock guitarist in particular.

Lars Kutschke - While We're Here (2022)
Lars Kutschke
German guitar master Lars Kutschke fully delivers on his potential all over his new solo album While We’re Here.
Released July 22nd, 2022 on the Timezone label, While We’re Here finds the slick and talented Kutschke using his blues, soul, jazz, funk, and rock influences to create a deliciously mixed bag of upscale roots music with the help of special guests including vocal powerhouse Tad Robinson, guitarist Kirk Fletcher, and organists Simon Oslender and Alberto Marsico.
Kutschke features instrumentals and vocal tunes on this new set, some original to him, some written by band members, and covers of songs by Little Milton, Neil Young, and Leon Russell. Lars produced most of the sessions himself with assistance from Till Sahm on two tracks. The actual performances were laid down in Germany and the USA. The resulting album skillfully walks a line between modern R&B and smooth jazz and a whole lot of people are going to love it.
Lars Kutschke is one of Europe’s finest guitarists and composers. He initially studied music in Dresden and Rotterdam but began to truly learn the blues when he connected with American singer Sharrie Williams and she invited him back to her home state of Michigan. This became an immersive experience that led to Kutschke hitting the road with Sharrie, playing Sunday Baptist services, and rubbing shoulders with blues legends Hubert Sumlin, Buddy Guy, and the Holmes Brothers.
Ultimately, he performed with Sharrie in more than 40 countries and forged his own unique playing style that focused on grooves and melodies. He’s well-versed in all types of American music but comes to it with a Continental flair that’s hypnotic and intriguing.
Kutschke opens While We’re Here with the gentle, mid-tempo funk of his original tune “Chelsea Morning.” It’s a chilled-out, ultra-melodic piece that begins up in the atmosphere and builds until it brings its pocket right to your front door. Lars’ phrasing and note choice are impeccable and he stretches way out without ever abandoning the groove. Kirk Fletcher also shows up on guitar here and contributes more sweet lines and licks. The band behind them lays down some juicy horn-and-organ accents on top of a tight rhythm guitar part and all is well with the world. Fine work.
Little Milton’s soul jam “I Want My Baby Back” gets a workout in Kutschke’s hands that features lead vocals from Indianapolis-based frontman Tad Robinson. Robinson is as good as it gets at the singer’s art, providing a smooth-but-intense center to this sophisticated classic. The interlocking bass and drum groove is worth a bunch of listening time all on its own and functions as a clinic on the topic of high-end rhythm sections. It’s an uptown cut without question but still has what it takes to knock you out.
Tad Robinson steps out again on Leon Russell’s “Hummingbird” and displays another facet of his vocal presence. The backup vocals lift the arrangement up and Kutschke turns us onto more of his understated guitar work. It’s an excellent reading of a song that’s found its place in history and now speaks to all of us.
Kutschke’s title cut “While We’re Here” feels peaceful and spiritual and contains some of his most beautiful guitar lines on the record. He never rushes things, always says exactly what’s needed, and paints the space between your headphones with color and precision. It’s a gorgeous moment that deserves your listening time. Other highlights on the record are “Hidalgo” and Neil Young’s “Coupe De Ville.”
Through it all, Lars Kutschke plays it cool, in the pocket, and out of sight. Highly recommended.

Alex Caporuscio - Alex Caporuscio (2010)
Alex Caporuscio
Caporuscio was born in '73 in London and lived in the British capital until he was 8 years old. With a Spanish mother and Italian father, he began to forge himself as a musician at the early age of six. Responsible for this was his grandfather, Rafael Martínez, guitarist and singer of the Celtys trio (Group of the '50s that accompanied the great stars of the Spanish song throughout all the theaters of the Spanish geography) beginning with him to become familiar with the secrets of the 6-string instrument and above all, transmitting to him the passion for the guitar and "teaching him how to teach himself."
But it was at the age of 15 when he discovered American roots music with the recordings of B.B. King, John Lee Hooker or Albert King came into his hands, changing the Spanish guitar for an electric one and beginning to perform blues with different groups in Italy, back in the '90s. He was already 16 years old and had a need to play with people and for people, a precocious prodigy who was compared to great masters such as Albert Collins, Johnny Winter or Stevie Ray Vaughan.
In 1995, already in Spain, he established relationships and musical experiences with other musicians on the circuit, who, according to Alex, helped him become what he is now. And it is at that moment when, encouraged by several of his friends, he decides to give free rein to his creative vein and record the only album released at the moment, in 2010, titled "Alex Capouruscio", produced by Jairo Zavala and released on the Basque label. , "Gaztelupeko Hotsak", along with Javier Vacas on bass and Antonio Álvarez on drums. There is almost no audacity, in a world in which some think that everything has already been invented. The reception of it, taking into account that it was his premiere (his first album) and with the obvious recklessness of making it with original compositions, has been excellent, with Ubane Uzin, one of the people in charge of the Guipuzcoan label, stating about Alex that "he is one of the few that are capable of selling in the United States.

Eric Demmer - So Fine (Gulf Coast) (2022)
Eric Demmer
A sax player, Eric Demmer started out as a roadie and got his first big break when he joined Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown’s touring band in 1993, a gig he retained until Gate’s death in 2005, including playing with Gate on Eric Clapton’s ‘From The Cradle’ tour. Demmer’s name may be familiar from credits on recent albums by The BB King Blues Band and Tito Jackson, but this is his debut release under his own name. Recorded in Houston, Texas, and produced by Eric and Gulf Coast label boss Mike Zito, Eric handles most of the vocals and plays sax, supported by a core band of Barry Seelen on keys, Hugo Rodriguez on guitar, Dennis Delfino on bass and Jerre Jackson on drums; The Grooveline Horns (Carlos Sosa, Fernando Castillo and Raul Vallejo) add support to some tracks, additional vocals come from Darrell Lacy, Melanie Covington and Eric’s daughter Danielle. Drummer Jordan Almes replaces Jerre on three cuts, Shawn Allen adds B3 to two tracks and there are guest appearances from Mike Zito, guitarists Jonn Del Toro Richardson, Mark May, and The Funky Rick Marcel.
The song writing credits are not given on the album but all seem to be original. The overall style is at the funky end of the blues spectrum, with a few gentler tunes mixed in for variety. Opener “Don’t Talk To Me” sets the pattern with funky bass lines underpinning a horn-driven tune as Eric sings in a gravelly, semi-spoken style before delivering an excellent sax break. Jonn Del Toro Richardson plays lead guitar on “She’s So Fine” which has a snaking latin rhythm before what is the outstanding song here, “Will It Ever Be The Same”, Mike Zito taking over the vocals on a wistful Americana tune with ringing guitar and a sax solo that builds beautifully from studied start to rousing finale, the lyrics apparently inspired by the terrible events of 9/11.
Eric injects humor into songs like “What Was I Thinking”, a funk-driven tune with spoken vocals about a relationship that does not turn out as Eric expected! Similarly, Eric proclaims that “I’m A Guitar Player”, although he does not actually play that instrument, just that he is one “deep down in my heart” on a fast-paced tune with Hugo’s lead work underpinned by Jonn’s second appearance, this time on rhythm guitar. More ringing guitar features on a rocking “I’m Alright” before Eric drops the tempo for a sensitive ballad, “Start It All Again” which is probably his best vocal of the set. “Get Out Of Town” bounces along with a full horn arrangement and wah rhythm guitar, overlaid by a striking slide guitar solo from Mark May. “Let Me Go” is another ballad, but this time Eric’s vocals sound strained, the track salvaged by the sax and guitar work. “Just Can’t Wait” and “Any Day Getaway” are both funky workouts, the latter featuring Eric’s daughter Danielle whose convincing vocals work well here. The final track has a familiar title, “Have You Ever Loved A Woman” but is not the Billy Myles/Freddie King song (though it clearly takes inspiration from those familiar lyrics) and provides a fast-paced end to the album with more fine sax work over what sounds like two guitarists though only Hugo is credited.
Eric’s debut album has some fine moments and will certainly appeal to those who enjoy the funky end of the blues and strong sax work.

Doug Jenson and the Feel Kings - String Theory (2009)
Doug Jenson
Not all of Canada’s greatest talents have received their just accolades. The late Doug Jenson, formerly of Jenson Interceptor (a Canadian rock band that hit national fame in the early 1980’s), is one such artist.
Doug Jenson was born May 19, 1955 on a farm just outside Spring Coulee, AB. From an early age, he showed signs of musical genius. He had perfect pitch and the ability to memorize songs in their entirety by age 3.
When he was 12 an uncle introduced Doug to the ukulele and there was no turning back. If the instrument had strings Jenson could play it.
In 1979, he formed Jenson Interceptor along with his wife Charlotte Wiebe, sister Kennedy Jenson, Albert Blain and Ed Johnson. The band’s success drew attention to Doug’s talent and the band was quickly signed by House of Lords (RCA). It wasn’t long before they were hitting the charts with tunes such as ‘Tiny Thing’ and ‘Heavenly Angels’.
Prosperous years fell on hard times after the financial demise of House of Lords. Jenson suffered more than a business loss, his marriage to Wiebe, was also finished. All band members agreed to go out as single acts.
Doug Jenson enjoyed a few years of week-long gigs, touring around western Canada with his newly formed band, Doug Jenson and the Feel Kings, until DJ’s and turntables began replacing bands. Left to occasional weekends for playing live, Jenson focused more on his writing, and building his home studio.
Times were tough but quitting was never an option to Jenson because music wasn’t just something he did for a living, music was who he was.
In his career as a solo act Jenson was offered a record deal in Toronto but he turned it down. He wanted artistic license and so spent time doing session work while he recorded and produced his own music. It was good enough to be showcased at the Juno’s (Canada’s equivalent to the Grammy’s).
He produced records for other artists and his incredible gift of pulling out the best performance in anyone he worked with was well known throughout the prairie provinces. He was a world class guitar player and a world class songwriter with thought provoking lyrics, highly effective chord structures and melody, and always a ripping guitar solo.

Pelle Lindberg Band - Leave This Town (2010)
Pelle Lindberg Band
The old notion that true blues can only be played by black musicians from the southern states of the USA no longer exists. Many white bands from different parts and corners of the globe know the art of sounding credible in their self-made blues vaults. Even in Sweden there are musicians who manage to convey the emotions that give the blues its distinctive character.
Guitarist Pelle Lindberg played for many years with the Bloosblasters (who also used the name Bluesblasters), who built a large and wide repertoire of songs in Swedish. Or rather, in true Scanian. For highlanders, it can sometimes be a little difficult to understand what the songs are about.
And collaborating with, for example, American blues artists is not so easy when you sing in a language other than English. Whether that was the reason Pelle Lindberg left Bloosblasters, I don't know. But you can always guess.
Anyway, he formed a new band, where vocalist Simon Mårtensson has the right feeling and courage to both sing and play the organ. Stefan Rosqvist on guitar, Alfred Andersson on bass and Walle Wahlgren on drums complete the band, where several of the members also write the songs.
The new album shows that the band is doing well in the world of international blues. It swings wildly, the band has real weight to its action and Lindberg himself is a real talent as both a songwriter and guitarist.

Loco Joe & The Fireworks - Under Gris Gris Spell (2020)
Loco Joe
Loco Joe & The Fireworks is a band that has been around since 1988.
Singer-guitarist Loco Joe - at the time still backing Eb Davis in his blues band - actually just formed Fireworks as a fun project alongside his work with Eb.
Originally they mainly played blues rock in the style of the sixties power trios. But over the years the band went through different phases and also opened up to other styles.
For example, Joe and the Fireworks played unplugged for a few years. The line-up of the band also changed.
occasionally.
Hans F. Hoffmann "The King Of The Four String" has been on bass since 1997. His distinctive style contributes significantly to the sound and with whom Joe has written many songs. Hans also played with the Rudy Stevenson Soulband for a long time and is also responsible for the smooth tones on Bass Guitar Crusher.
Five years ago, Loco Joe & The Fireworks recorded a blues album with some friends from the Berlin scene. Since then, Sven Hoffmann has been a permanent member and the standard line-up is now a four-piece.
Sven is a guitarist and harmonica player and also enriches the band's sound with his background vocals. Prior to that, Sven played with Jan Hirte, Nick Katzman and Boggie Radio.
The line-up last changed at the end of 2017 and since spring 2018 Klaus Krüger has been on drums, who is also the drummer of Guitar Crusher's backing band "The Mellowtones".
Three years ago, Joe toured the southern states of the US for half a year and was particularly impressed with the music, travel and scenery of Louisiana.
You can hear this clearly in the songs "Party At Mulate's" and "Get Out Of My Way", both written after his return. Thus came the title of the CD "Under Gris Gris Spell".
Gris Gris is a talisman, bag or amulet that can attract good luck and positive energy and ward off negative forces.
