King Earl Boogie Band - Loaded & Live (2009)

 Another album’s worth of good-time boogie recorded live during late 2005 and early 2006.

The original King Earl Boogie Band was formed by Paul King and Colin Earl, who were founder members – along with Ray Dorset – of Mungo Jerry.

Paul retired from the band in 1996 and was replaced by Dave Peabody, and at the same time, bluesman Les Calvert also joined.

This album sees the band introducing their new drummer to the line-up – a certain John Coughlan who was the original drummer with Status Quo.

This set features some pretty mean fusion of blues and boogie. ‘Money To Burn’ is a strong opener, and the pace is maintained throughout with numbers such as ‘Matchbox’, ‘Jelly Roll Baker’, ‘Slow Down’ and ‘Big Road’.

The stand out track however, is a storming rendition of the Juicy Lucy hit ‘Who Do You Love’.

This is definitely a CD if you want to just have a good time.

Morblus - I Can't Go Wrong (2006)

The spirit and soul of their music does not only become apparent live on stage but also in their publications (7 CDs, 1 DVD) which mainly consist of original songs written and arranged by frontman Roberto Morbioli.

There’s one thing in common: With their wide repertoire of blues classics, modern soul pieces and original compositions and with an unbridled amount of adrenaline, the quartet, around, MORBLUS evokes a unforgettable music experience which with its power and groove carries its audiences away more than any other act in the European music scene.

Well known for their energetic sound, by fans and musicians alike, in Europe and beyond, Morblus has toured Italy with John Mayall, and Robben Ford and played the legendary B.B. King Blues Club in Memphis Tennessee.

In their more than 20 years of band history, MORBLUS looks back at an impressing journey to the great stages in Europe and acquired a big fan community escpecially in their home country Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Luxemburg.

In 2011, MORBLUS played more than 80 concerts, for example at the Sierre Blues Festival in Switzerland, the Blues’n Jazz Rallye in Luxemburg or the Trasimeno Blues Festival in Italy.

Freedom for spelling!
In some cases it should be allowed, especially when it comes to wordplay. Otherwise not! Like with the Italian band Morblus. Although I really have to concentrate not to type the two missing letters.
This band has already experienced so much and has existed since 1991 and has made a considerable number of records in that time. A DVD is also part of it and after having already made a name for themselves in their home country, which resulted in tours with John Mayall and Robben Ford, they want to get one or both feet on the field on this side of the Alps.
How could it be otherwise, Morblus has already docked in the Netherlands and Belgium and has also been a guest in B.B. King's legendary club.
RockTimes has a CD from 2006 entitled "I Can't Go Wrong" and we want to hear whether the band is on the right blues path with it.
Right from the start, you can tell that the CD has a really rich sound. It was recorded in the Mac Wave Studios, Brescia, Italy. The disc was produced by Alberto Butturini & Morblus.
Nevertheless, the interplay between Hammond (Daniele Scala) and guitarist Roberto Morbioli is immediately appealing.

The compositions give themselves enough space for solo excursions and Morbioli has a slightly hoarse voice, which of course fits well with the music.
Diego Pozzan is not only on his drum kit, but also knows how to refine the rhythm with various percussive additions.
The choruses are terrific.
At first, you could bet that it is Morblus musicians who provide the great backing vocals, but in "What's It To You" at the latest, women are definitely singing along. One singer has real soul/gospel in her voice, making the song a high-flyer.
Oh man, this Hammond is really used brilliantly and Scala shows off the organ in a great display. Bassist Stefano Dalla Porta plucks more than solidly and the band draws on the full range of blues. The instrumental "Lump-Sugar" is a driving piece with jump blues display and even in the slow songs they deliver convincing 12-bar fare.
The title track is really loose and it rocks hard. Up to this point, Morblus leaves nothing to be desired, especially since Morbioli gives his guitar various sound effects and these are not only achieved by the wah wah pedal.

The group has a great drive and convinces with its independence.
A change of tool from electric guitar to dobro and sliding this too brings other blues colors into play. With another instrumental ("Guitars' Talking") they switch to a jazzy flair and it grooves like crazy. Here again, it's the hand drums that create additional atmosphere. Great!
It can also be done acoustically: "Pappy's Words" is a wonderfully airy soul affair and there they are again... the ladies on the vocal microphone mentioned above. Scala almost takes a break here. He simply weaves a very delicate sound carpet.
With the cover versions, Morblus is not in the top 10 of the blues charts. After a good hour, it is clear that the Italians are really not wrong and have put on a very entertaining foray into the 12-bar: "I Can't Be Wrong"!

The ingredients are right, have been mixed well and are sure to please.

Warren Haynes - Million Voices Whisper (2024)

Back in June I had the good fortune of talking with Warren Haynes about his prolific symphony tour. He was about to go on the road with Slash, too, so he had a lot of cool things going on. But what he was most excited about was the Nov. 1 release of his first solo album in 9 years, Million Voices Whisper on Fantasy Records.

Warren told me this summer Millions Voices Whisper started with a Muscle Shoals sort of vibe but “it kind of goes all over the place,” which isn’t unusual for Warren, a guitar legend synonymous with iconic bands such as The Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead, and the co-founder of jam masters Gov’t Mule.

“All over the place” sums up this album quite well, actually. Voices defies any kind of labeling. It’s got some long jams but isn’t a jam record. It’s not a blues record, or a soul album, but it gives you all of this and more. If anything, it’s a modern gospel album. Warren and his new band (John Medeski on keys, Greg Osby on saxophone, Terrence Higgins on drums and his Gov’t Mule bandmate Kevin Scott on bass) take you to church over and over again.

Voices is one of Warren’s most expressive, emotional albums. You feel it in the playing as much as you do in the lyrics. It’s the total package, starting with “These Changes,” an Allman Brothers style jammer co-written by Derek Trucks (Yeah, that’s him on slide, bringing some Soul Serenade with him). Everyone is locked in, and are celebrating life together. It’s joyous, raw-yet-polished, and real.

The Muscle Shoals vibe really comes to life on “Go Down Swinging.” It’s an irresistible combination of blues and soul, and one of the happiest songs I’ve heard about resilience. “You Ain’t Above Me” has some signature B.B. King guitar licks throughout on top of a bluesy gospel arrangement really brought home by Medeski and Scott. The band couldn’t compliment each other – or the song – any better (love Scott’s sliding line at the end). The song was co-written by Jamey Johnson, who you’ll hear more about later.

“This Life As We Know It” is the kind of anthem we can all use right now. It’s hopeful and all about embracing change, plus it’s catchy as hell. Warren’s vocal take is amazing here. On every track there’s a moment where I think, “I see why he’s so excited to share this album with us.” Every song is inspired, because Warren feels blessed. When shit shut down in 2020, as we navigated the pandemic, it was hard for Warren and his giant family of musicians. He’s grateful for every gig, and every minute in the studio. He knows how lucky he is and he shows it with every word and every note. As Santana once said, each song “is an offering.” It really feels that way. I encourage you to let this song (and album) fill you with gratitude. Put it on as you start the day and see if it changes your mood.

Still, it can be hard to be grateful when the nation is a mess. “Day of Reckoning” is a call for action with special guests Jamey Johnson and Lukas Nelson (who co-wrote it). The tune is a timely nod to Vietnam-era protests (and has a tasteful Buffalo Springfield feel). It’s a call to arms, a rallying cry. It’s also where the album gets its name: “Million voices whisper, getting louder when they sing / Million spirits waiting on a day of reckoning.” The song builds into a fiery gospel track (I was half-expecting Mavis Staples to show up). It’s cool to hear these guys together, and they thought so, too, after collaborating on a “Last Waltz” tribute a few years back.

“Real, real love” was co-written by the late Greg Allman, and fittingly reminds me of Gregg’s solo album, Laid Back. It’s a nice change of pace here, a slow dance – and Derek plays his best slide.

Let’s get funky now. The band gets right back to jamming with “Lies, Lies, Lies >Monkey Dance>Lies, Lies, Lies.” Scott shines on bass, sounding like Jaco Pastorius. It’s the wildest jam track on the album, right up there with “Terrified,” where It’s as Warren said – all over the place. And in the best kind of way. Medeski is magnificent on organ, and is a huge part of the Zeppelin energy that transpires.

Voices might be a solo record, but it sure doesn’t feel like it. It’s a killer band having a blast, and they can’t wait for you to join the party.

Million Voices Whisper was produced by Warren Haynes (with a few tracks co-produced by Trucks, who also co-wrote “Hall of Future Saints,” a fun track that pays tribute to a wide variety of icons, especially Ray Charles). It was recorded by Evan Bakke at Power Station New England. Trevor Okonuk was an assistant engineer. It was mixed by John Paterno and mastered by Greg Calbi and Steve Fallone at Sterling Sound. The album is dedicated to Allman Brothers co-founder Dickey Betts, who left us on April 18.

4 Jacks - Deal With It (2013)

 Deal With It, the latest from Four Jacks, is an album jam packed with great sounds. From standard blues progressions, to jazz influenced pieces, and even some old rock and roll, Four Jacks keep it fresh and interesting on this album. The band consists of Anson Funderburgh on guitar, Big Joe Maher on drums and vocals, Kevin McKendree on keys, and Steve Mackey on bass.

The album kicks off with a mid-tempo instrumental blues in the title track “Deal With It.” The guitar riff is catchy and is a great intro for the album. “Have Ourselves A Time” is the next track on the album. It’s a jazzy blues and with lyrics like “C’mon now people let’s have ourselves a time. When this band starts swingin’ we really gonna lose our minds,” it’s hard not to want to have fun listening to this tune. “I Don’t Want To Be President” is another great song off the album. It has clever lyrics and a spoken, conversational vocal that make this song hard to ignore. Other songs like “Texas Twister” and “Ansonmypants” bring it back to a ’50s rock feel. “Texas Twister” is a grooving instrumental that flows right into “Ansonmypants.”

Sometimes called "The Queen of the Blues", she was known for her rough, powerful vocals. Over the course of her career, she was nominated for 11 Grammy Awards, winning 1985's Best Traditional Blues Album for her appearance on Blues Explosion.

Cosmic Travelers - Live at the Spring Crater Celebration (1972)

 Between 1965-67, Drake Levin made his name as the lead guitarist for Paul Revere & The Raiders during their heyday. Joel Christie played bass as a session musician for Lee Michaels. Dale Loyola was the drummer for Hook and many other Los Angeles bands. In 1972, they formed The Cosmic Travelers and relocated to Oahu, Hawaii. This ultra-rare 1972 live recording of them at the extinct Diamond Head crater in front of 7,000 fans is full of long, maddening guitars, thunderous bass, and pulsating drum jams. The liner notes were written by Drake's widow, Sandra, who was there with them and tell the whole story of this psychedelic, bluesy and soulful adventure in the tropics!

Taylor Newville & The Riders - Let The Good Times Begin EP (2023)

 Taylor and the Riders! Is the duo band of two Rough Rider teachers from Portland’s Roosevelt High School who both share a passion for guitar playing. Taylor Newville is a Portland native and got to enjoy the local music scene as a young child and into her adulthood. She’ll be accompanied by George Bishop on rhythm guitar.

She began her musical career at age six playing ukulele and through the years learned to play the acoustic and electric guitar. Taylor has been a student of Ethos, School of Rock, Rock N Roll Camp For Girls and Roosevelt’s High school Jazz band. She has played at several venues around the city including Berbati’s Pan, Satyricon, Memorial Coliseum, Hawthorne Theater and The Crystal Ballroom.

Norman Sylvester (The Boogie Cat) the Northwest icon of blues has been one of Taylor’s idols and she has been fortunate to have the opportunity to take lessons from and play with him and The Norman Sylvester band at the Cathedral Jazz festival. Taylor is a blues fan and as of late has been jamming with the best around Portland. Her fellow teacher George Bishop is a High school history teacher for Roosevelt High school and when he has some spare time, loves playing the guitar. (George has been playing the guitar for 20+ years but who’s counting!)

Joe Mack - When I Think About Love (1999)

 Guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer, teacher, Joe Mack has a history of performing in a variety of situations for over 40 years. His musical travels have taken him across the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. He has also travelled to England where he performed with Gail Moran-Corea (Chick Corea's wife), as well as percussionist extraordinaire Hossam Ramzy (Page & Plant, Peter Gabriel, The Rolling Stones, and many others). Joe has also appeared on with stage with "guitar wizard" Steve Vai, nationally renowned artists such as Johnny A., Barry Goudreau (Boston, Engine Room), James Montgomery, Charlie Farren, Jon Butcher and blues legend and former Muddy Waters guitar player, Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson as well as opening for the late great Johnny Winter as well as sitting in with the Legendary Les Paul at the Iridium in NYC.

 Currently Joe is appearing with his own band, The Joe Mack Band, which features Ronnie Belben on bass & vocals and Mark "Sparky" Sandler on drums, in and around the New England area to rave reviews. Together this trio performs original compositions as well as the music of the following artists: Joe Satriani, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Johnson, Carlos Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder, ZZ Top, The Allman Brothers, The Average White Band, Johnny Winter, Sam & Dave, The Rolling Stones, Elvis  Presley, Brian Setzer, Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry, The Ventures, The Shadows, The Commitments, Louis Jordan, Doobie Brothers & many others.

 They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Well  on his new CD Joe Mack flatters the hell out of some of the best to  ever pick up a guitar. All originals here, but the influences are clear.  Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jeff Beck, B.B. King, Joe Satriani, and too many  more to name, come shining through on this brilliant CD from the local  bluesmaster.               

 The flavor may come from the influences, but the cooking  is all Joe Mack. And cook he does. From tracks 1 to 12 and everywhere in  between, Joe Mack plays the blues with an unbridled enthusiasm and  ability seldom found north of the Mason-Dixon line.               

 The opening guitar lick of "They Say" is like a fish hook  embedding itself into the base of your skull as it slowly reels you in.  The title track "When I Think About Love" with Joe's raspy vocals  accentuated by the backing vocals of Teisha Sawyer and Bethany Wright.  The lighthearted "I Used To Have A Brain (Then I Got Married)" with its  classic line "since I became Mr. Right, everything I do is wrong." The  depressing "Peace of Mind" conjuring up images of a smoke-filled,  darkened blues hall, an aging man at the end of the bar sipping his  bourbon, contemplating life's mistakes. The exotic "Song For Jeanne,"  reminiscent of Stevie Rays' "Riviera Paradise." Beautifully written and  performer. 

 The all out jam of "Joes' Boogie". The foot stomping  "Turnup Joe Zamp" (get it?) and the funky drive of "You Ain't What You  Wear." "Hen House Blues" is a throwback to the way the blues used to be,  while "Desperate" (I love this song) incorporates the best of  everything the blues has become. "Mean Old Woman Blues" truly is as mean  as a junkyard dog and the acoustic instrumental "Peppermint Stick"  closes the CD with dramatic flair.

 I really can't say enough about this guy's playing or this  CD. If you're a fan of the blues, the electric guitar, or just plain  good music pick up this CD.  No collection should be without one.

The Raindogs - Chicago Callin' (1988)

 Benno Rupp and Kurt Bislin met Aron Burton in 1985 at the club "Limmatquai 82" in Zurich. Burton had a three-week engagement there as bandleader and bass player, backing up a different solo artist each week.

Benno Rupp and Kurt Bislin knew of him, being one of the sought-after bass players in Chicago. Burton played with his brother-in-law, slide guitar master Johnny Littlejohn, Eddie Clearwater, and James Cotton, just to name a few. Aron Burton and his band, consisting of his brother Larry Burton on guitar, A.C. Reed on saxophone, Alan Batts on keyboards and Casey Jones on drums were picked by legendary Texas blues giant Albert Collins to play in his first recording session with Alligator Records. The musicians then became the original Icebreakers, and recorded several albums and acted as Collins' touring band for many years.

Aron Burton wasn't just one fine bass player, but a wonderful singer in his own right. He made a habit of spending about half of the year in Europe, mainly in Copenhagen. There he recorded his first solo album, "Usual Dangerous Guy”, with the Kenn Lending Blues Band and Champion Jack Dupree on piano. The album, with exclusively original songs, proves Burton’s strong abilities also as a songwriter.

The two young Swiss blues enthusiasts lived a good hour away from Zurich, but nonetheless went to "Limmatquai 82" as often as possible to listen to and talk to their newly found friend. Aron Burton then went back to Chicago and not much later, the two Swiss arrived in ‘the windy city’ too, for their first time. Aron Burton invited them to stay in his home, which was located out on the westside. He showed them Chicago and its vibrant blues scene and introduced the two to many of the legendary blues musicians alive and well back then, like Junior Wells, Sunnyland Slim, Moose Walker and Eddie Clearwater. It meant the world for the two ...

Kurt Bislin and Benno Rupp, together with their band "The Raindogs", planned the recording their first album with new inspiration. Knowing Aron Burton was coming back to Zurich again in fall of 1987 to perform at Limmatquai 82 for three weeks led to the idea of inviting him to sing a couple of songs on the album. Burton was all up for it and ended up recorded his two originals "Seven Day Blues" and “Spirit” with The Raindogs.

On this tour, Aron Burton had an up-and-coming singer in the band, the marvelous Zora Young. On piano was one of Germany's stellar New Orleans blues and boogie players, the wonderful Christian Willisohn from Munich. It didn't take much to convince the two to become part of The Raindogs’ recording session. Zora Young sang on two songs, her original "Bad Track Records” and Kokomo Arnold's "How Long" and, Christian Willisohn provided outstanding piano work throughout the entire album.

"Chicago Callin'" was released shortly after and got rave reviews from all over Switzerland. This led to several tours the following years. For instance "The Raindogs", featuring Aron Burton and Christian Willisohn (sans Zora Young, unfortunately) played such prestigious festivals like the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Paléo Festival in Nyon, and the Out In The Green in Frauenfeld, Switzerland.

Now, some 35 years later, it was time to dig up the old 1/4 inch master tape, and check if it still was firmly holding the music that was recorded such a long time ago. It was a very special moment when sound engineer Little Konzett put the old tape onto his Studer master machine and hit the play button. There it was…as fresh as decades ago! With some minor adjustments to meet modern sound expectations and today’s wider sonic range, the recording went into the digital world.

Aron Burton and Benno Rupp are sadly no longer with us. But the rest of the crew is still here, spread out all over the world. Zora Young is living in Chicago, drummer Ordy Somchai Sihaampai is back in his homeland of Thailand and Christian Willisohn is doing what he's always doing, playing his piano all over Europe. Kurt Bislin sings and plays the blues even more than ever, while René Mehrmann and Norman Marogg are flying a little under the radar these days.

The Champ Jaxon Band - An Evening with The Champ Jaxon Band (2024)

 Champ Jaxon is a 13 year-old aspiring blues-rock musician based out of Southwest Florida. Champ was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 2010 and his family relocated back to their hometown in Florida in 2013 when he was three years old.

Champ has performed over 120 gigs with The Champ Jaxon Band in nine different states. He first performed on Music Row in Nashville in 2021 when he was just ten years old and Beale Street in Memphis a year later, representing the Southwest Florida Blues Society at the International Blues Challenge. He appeared on “The Ellen Show” with guest host Brad Paisley in December of 2021 and made his acting debut on NBC’s “Ordinary Joe” a month later. Champ also performed at the 2022 Young Artist Academy Awards in Hollywood, California, where he took home the “Outstanding Instrumentalist” honors. 

In May of 2021, a video of Champ performing The Marshall Tucker Band’s “Can’t You See” went viral and was seen by the band, which led to them inviting Champ to a show and calling him up to perform that song with them. Two months later, they asked him to fill in on lead guitar for an entire set in Birmingham, AL, opening for the band Alabama at Oak Mountain Ampitheatre. 

Champ has also been called up to play alongside The Allman Betts Band, Eric Gales, Chris Andersen (Outlaws), Scott Sharrard (Gregg Allman Band, Little Feat), Damon Fowler, and Frank Bang, among others. Additionally, The Champ Jaxon Band has been a supporting act on bills that included Gov’t Mule, Blackberry Smoke, Old Crow Medicine Show, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, and more. 

The Champ Jaxon Band’s debut album, “The Grove”, was released in December 2021 and includes six original songs and one cover. The album was recorded at Farmadelica Sound in Bokeelia, FL and includes two songs that have music videos. In addition to a organically grown following at live shows, Champ’s social media pages (Facebook, Instagram, Youtube) have over 85,000 combined followers and millions of views. 

Champ’s signature guitar is a 1959 Les Paul Special he bought at Carter’s Vintage in Nashville. He also has a Gibson Flying V and Gibson SG, along with a Brad Paisley signature Telecaster gifted by Mr. Paisley himself on “The Ellen Show”, where they jammed together to end the episode. Champ also plays two custom-built Blind Armadillo guitars, Red Bear & Apollo, handmade for him locally in Venice, FL, by luthier Victor McGuire. Regardless of the guitar he decides to pick up, he plays them all through his Harry Joyce Custom 30W amplifier and speaker cabinet. 

Champ is an honor student and citizen, having performed at various local charity events, including benefits for the community free health clinic and Hurricane Ian recovery. He also donated his earnings (along with a venue match) from a show last summer to his school’s music program, which resulted in $3,500 being spent on new recording equipment for the students to enjoy. Champ wanted the funds to go to something besides just instruments so that students who may not be musically inclined could be included. 

The Champ Jaxon Band also includes Champ’s father, Nate Winkler, (manager/rhythm guitar), Brent Adam (drums), and Nick Rosado (bass). Champ has been a student at The Rock Box Music School & Stage in North Port, FL, since 2019 and has also studied under Scott Sharrard. When he’s not performing, Champ is a normal kid who enjoys video games, Legos, Star Wars and Marvel movies, and spending time outdoors.

Chad Rupp and the Sugar Roots - Gate C23 (2024)

 Portland-based multi-instrumentalist Chad Rupp releases what I believe is his third record (Devil ‘Won’t Get You’ was released in 2023, ‘The Sugar Roots: Savage’s Life’ in 2021).

I must say, this record is a nice surprise. The Portland blues scene is a lively one and Chad apparently is a central figure in it. He surrounds himself with fine musicians and even started a record label (Lightning In A Bottle Records) to support musical growth in other musicians. He himself was 17 when he knew he wanted to play the blues.

Mannish Boy by Muddy Waters hit him and when his brother introduced him to SRV, it was done. Before that, it was hair metal he wanted to get into (oeps!).

Eight originals on this record he wrote in two weeks and three covers that mean a lot to him (14 Dollars In The Bank by Paul Delay, Blind Crippled & Crazy by O.V. Wright and She Is The One by Roland Stone).

The originals are all autobiographical, good material. For example, the title song (Gate C23) is about a nice woman (Carla!) getting him on a plane to Memphis in time.

Chad knows how to write a song one can relate to. He and his band are currently doing their thing on a semi-professional basis meaning that after a day’s work the music business starts. “Challenge is money”, he says. But he’s been in music for over 30 years and still loves doing it. “When you are a musician, you are my family” he says.

Chad is a strong supporter of live music and a fierce player and singer. His approach to the blues is modern; it is soul-infused, funky, personal and danceable. Go see him when he is around!
