Jeff Pitchell - Heavy Hitter (2002)
Jeff Pitchell
Whoa! Were did this guy come from? Jeff Pitchell is a young bluesman that really can smoke the six-string. "Heavy Hitters" is the best possible name for this CD. Pitchell is totally a major league caliber artist, a real home run hitter. He gets a little help from his friends, namely Rick Derringer, Clarence Clemons, legendary harmonica player James Cotton, and Dave Mason, which gives the production countless years of experience in the studio. Derringer is an excellent producer, not to mention a great rock guitarist and vocalist.
What impressed me is all the original material found in the 15 tracks on this album. Blues is an idiom that has its share of covers available, and many artists take advantage of that in lieu of writing their own material. Jeff does not fall into that mindset, and he sets out to hold the line with his own material.
His voice sounds like a heavy-duty combination of Stevie Ray Vaughan meets Michael Bolton. It is an attractive blend of vocal styles to put the accent on his lighting fast guitar picking. It seems the spirit of Stevie Ray inspires every young artist wielding a guitar. I hear his soul and influence in a lot of new blues music. I really enjoy blues-rock that proudly displays his trademark sound. "Eye for an Eye" permeates itself with that recognizable echo of the past. There is a truckload of music on this CD, and even so, there is not a washout in the entire lot. Every track rocks with blues soaked emotion and fervour. Pitchell plays all the guitars on the fiery instrumental title track "Heavy Hitter." Even without words, the music is scorching hot, and it speaks to you as if it had a voice.
With strong performances like this as an example, the blues will continue to evolve. The future of music itself holds a lot of promise as the burning flame of commitment from men like Jeff Pitchell continually ignites the spirit of music.

Elizabeth King - Living in the Last Days (2021)
Elizabeth King
Elizabeth King is a septuagenarian gospel singer based in Memphis, Tennessee. She began her career in 1969 with the single "Testify" for the Designer label and issued a few others. From 1970 to 1973, she fronted the all-male Gospel Souls, who cut a handful of singles -- including the hit "I Heard the Voice" -- for Juan D. Shipp's D-Vine Spirituals label. King retired and spent the next 48 years raising 15 children, and singing in church and on a weekly gospel radio program. In 2019, Bible & Tire Recording Company issued The D-Vine Spirituals Recordings by Elizabeth King & The Gospel Souls. Watson and Shipp invited King to meet at Memphis' Delta-Sonic Studio. When Watson asked if she wanted to record again, she responded in the affirmative. Her first recording in almost 50 years, Living in the Last Days, is the result.
King is backed by the Sacred Soul Sound Section, the label's studio band. Led by guitarist Will Sexton, it includes drummer George Sluppick, guitarist Matt Ross-Spang, and bassist Mark Edgar Stuart. Famed session organist Al Gamble also appears. Singers Christopher and Courtney Barnes -- the Sensational Barnes Brothers -- lend their voices to these proceedings, as do King's former labelmates the Vaughn Sisters and the D-Vine Spiritualettes. The set opens with a stirring read of Rev. James Cleveland's Civil Rights-era anthem "No Ways Tired." At 77, King's voice is lower in range, but she has lost none of her power or control. The band plays swampy and loose, and she commands them with her massive contralto. Her voice embodies unshakable faith and hope that she in turn imparts to the listener. "He Touched Me" is not the staid Bill Gaither hymn, but a raucous cover of the Shaw Singers' gritty gospel-blues classic. King's version is fueled by reverbed guitars, brushed snare, and the angelic voices of the Sensational Barnes Brothers. She underscores the lyric with joyous conviction. The title track is a choogling soul-blues with bumping Hammond B-3, slide guitar, and clattering snare all riding a slip time groove. The chorus responds to King emphatically with exclamations, affirmations, and thunderous handclaps. King recut three of her early Designer sides here. "Testify" joins rowdy gospel to roadhouse rockabilly, making it tough to know whether it's Saturday night or Sunday morning. "A Long Journey" is an exuberant sacred soul number that recalls the Staple Singers, and "Walk with Me" finds the band offering King a filthy, strolling, rhythm & blues as she croons above them. "Call on Them" sees King and the band joined by swinging horns, and she sings "Blessed Be the Name of the Lord" in a haunted a cappella. Closer "You've Got to Move" is a spooky yet hopeful reading of Mississippi Fred McDowell's blues-gospel classic. The throaty grain in King's voice reassures even as it warns. Living in the Last Days is immediate, powerful, and unforgettable. It took her almost 50 years to record it, but it was worth the wait.

Johnny Fury - Johnny Fury II (2018)
Have you ever had to wolf down an ice cream because it is so hot out that it will melt? You manically inhale the sweet goodness to ensure the bulk of it doesn’t end up on the sidewalk or on your shirt. Down in Texas in the Summer this is probably a major issue. Austin based Johnny Fury’s sophomore album, and 2nd self-titled album, Johnny Fury II feels like this kind of experience. It is a short hopped up blast of Soul Blues that you digest in a quick single helping.
Fury sings with a clear tenor that is up front and unassuming. His songwriting, 7 of the 9 songs are original, is straightforward and the musicianship throughout is top notch. Main rhythm section drummer Russell Lee and bassist Glenn Fukunaga keep a quick snapping beat. They are replaced on just a few tracks by Kevin Abbenante and Rich Baur on drums and Omar Vallejo, Odis Hill and Joe Miller on bass but the vibe is still consistent. The horns on this record are strong and creative. Mitch Quintanilla is the arranger, keyboardist and sax-man with Matthew Price on trombone and Mike Maher on trumpet. Bukka Allen and Cole Gramling each contribute a track of keyboards and Hiroki Shimizu lends guitar to a track.
Johnny Fury is a guitar-slinger. His six string work is front and center but he doesn’t fall heed to the temptation of endless noodling. The music here is sharp and tight like a hard charging Rockabilly record, but in the form of a Texas Shuffle. “Without Me” is a clever well written shuffle that highlights Fury’s overdubbed rhythm and lead skills. It also has a great chorus that is unique. The slinky “Life on the Streets” is a great minor key soul work out. The rocking album closer “Blue Sunrise” is a total departure. Johnny sings with conviction on this track and his delayed distorted guitar is free flowing. This is distinctly not a Blues song and is incongruous with the rest of the album, but it is so well performed it’s hard to not love it.
One of the two covers here is Marvin Gaye’s “Mercy Mercy Me (the Ecology)” in which Fury adds his own additional lyrics. The track, like the rest of the record, is tight and on point with great horn arrangements that punctuate the groove. However, Fury’s voice can’t compare to the master himself and adding lyrics to such an iconic song is a little presumptuous. “Mercy Mercy Me” originally had a groove, a laid back blissed-out vibe that this interpretation would have benefited from.
The cover of “Mercy Mercy Me” highlights the quick on-the-beat tempo that characterizes this record. Most of the songs are at a fast tempo, and in many cases a little too fast for the material. The tempos force all the interesting performances to be rushed. A little more air, a smidge less speed, a bit more swagger would have allowed, for example, the cover of “All Your Love” or the original “My Heart Is Yours” to bloom a little more. SRV’s debut Texas Flood is a great template for a fast paced adrenaline pumping record that still has room to breath.
Johnny Fury II is a great listen because Fury is a very talented musician and front man. His guitar playing and singing exude confidence that is reassuring and engaging for the listener, compounded by the like minded playing of all the musicians. This quick blast of Texas Soul twang leaves the listener wanting more.

Chris Martin Trio - Young Blood (2014)
For the last decade, guitarist Chris Martin has been hard at work ensuring that the spirit of blues, swing and rockabilly is alive and well in eastern Canada. Since debuting as a solo artist in 2003, Martin has gone on to an illustrious career as a front man, producer and record label owner (Let's Riot! Music). Basically, if it's hip and happening in the rockabilly community in Halifax, Martin is on the pulse of it.
He first gained widespread notoriety with The Trouble Shooters. Joined by a full band, including a brass ensemble, Martin's Trouble Shooters were a staple of the downtown scene in Halifax throughout their duration. They released a superb full-length collection of high stakes rockabilly and loose jump blues in 2012, A Whole 'Nother Thang, which earned them 'Blues Recording Of The Year' nominations from the East Coast Music Association and Music Nova Scotia.
And now, as if an old soul like Martin could get any deeper down into the roots of it all, he's decided to strip down to a grittier trio platform, featuring ex-Trouble Shooter Stu Hayward on bass duties, and drummer extraordinaire Dru Donovan. The full-length album, Young Blood, released in April 2014 features the nuanced and authentic-feeling single "12 Bar Blues (Searching For You)", accompanied by a video that frames perfectly the kind of wild times typical of a Chris Martin show. The Trio's live sets are tight, blending original material seamlessly with covers of classics by Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, T-Bone Walker and Slim Harpo. If you're looking for a guy to help you cut loose after a long day of the blues, look no further than Halifax's own Chris Martin.

Three Times Lucky - Down To Texas (2012)
Hailing from Canada"s capital, Rockin" Blues outfit THREE TIMES LUCKY were formed in 2010 by a group of veteran Ottawa, Ontario based musicians, with a plan to form a collective of like minded musicians from the local music community, and to combine their mutual desire to perform traditional rural and urban American Blues/Roots music, whilst working with the added commitment to writing, performing and recording their own unique brand of original good time, rejuvenatin" juke joint blues. The guys in Three Times Lucky have been told they"re the epitome of the Friday-night bar band. With rootsy songs that sound like the Eagles, the Stones and The Band, delivered by veteran musicians who are obviously enjoying themselves, the Ottawa band knows how to get a crowd dancing, laughing and having a good time. Three Times Lucky play mostly original blues-based music, along with a healthy dose of traditional and newer blues/roots music, including some classics by Sonny Boy Williamson II (Rice Miller), Muddy Waters, Hudson Whittaker (Tampa Red), Jimmy Reed and Delbert McClinton, although they are not averse to slipping into a Chuck Berry rocker, a Stones tune, a Steve Earle ballad or even adding a bit of a backbeat to a Hank William"s classic like "Mind Your Own Business". The band consists of songwriter, lead guitarist and vocalist, David Reid; Leslie Rohonczy on lead vocals and percussion; Larry Deszcz on drums and vocals; Jeff Holgate on harmonica, keyboards and vocals; Allan Wilmore on keyboards, guitar and vocals; Zteve Reid on bass and vocals; and Norm Provencher on lap steel guitar. People who see TTL live, comment on their close resemblance to "The Band", and with their penchant for multi-layered vocals, dynamic keyboard work, bluesy guitar riffs, a solid rhythm section, and amazing earthy tones, it"s no wonder. Their 2011 debut CD entitled "Mojo Offa Muddy", opened to solid reviews, sold well locally, and received regular air play on select radio stations across Canada. "Down To Texas", THREE TIMES LUCKY"s 2012 sophomore release, follows the course set by "Mojo Offa Muddy", along with the usual collection of hard rockin" urban blues numbers, "Down To Texas" again showcases Three Times Lucky"s versatility, strong song writing and solid playing, with an added variety of rootsy country ballads and blues based soul numbers. This album also features the sensational talents of "The Texas Horns", by way of Austin TX, adding the spice on the Southern styled rocker "Down to Texas", as well turning up the heat on the sultry blues crooner "Lost Your Good Thing". "Down to Texas" was released in September 2012 to good reviews, and several tunes on the album have garnered local and national radio airplay in Canada. The new album has been well received by the local blues community in the Ottawa Valley and is enjoyed immensely by all who hear it, or those lucky enough to catch the band live at festivals and clubs. (both albums are available on CDBaby, iTunes and Amazon). Count on THREE TIMES LUCKY to bring their top game to any recording studio, live music venue or festival stage near you. Just throw on your favorite dancing shoes, grab a partner, and get ready to rock da blues! Yer Rockin" Blues Satisfaction is guaranteed! MISSION STATEMENT: To write, record and perform traditional rural and urban American Blues, as well as our original Rockin" Blues Roots music; to play entertainin", inspiritin", rejuvenatin" music at live venues and on digital media; all the while trying to connect and reflect our own experiences with other people"s individual life experiences. In this way, we hope to relay our own heartfelt and sometimes humorous observations on current and past sociopolitical issues of Pan-Canadian and Trans-Global concern. Any way you shake it, it"s all singing the Blues. In short, THREE TIMES LUCKY might be that Rootsy/Folk Rockn"/Blues Alternative band you"ve been looking for all your life. If you"re looking for some fun, along.

Brenda Taylor - Buggy Ride (2021)
Brenda Taylor
Brenda was coached by her father Eddie Taylor. After his death 1985 her mother kept the family legacy functioning.
Born July 12th in the late 1960's Brenda Taylor was Eddie ''Big-town Playboy'' Taylor Sr. and Lee Vera's first born child. A smile of joy occupied both parent faces on that sunny day. They resided on the 2700 block west Madison street in Chicago, Illinois above Duke's Place Lounge. Throughout Brenda's youthful years she'd peer through the exhaust fan to watch her father perform. As she grew older and more acquainted with Blues Rhythm music she became more educated how important the great guitarist her father was. Eddie Taylor played lead for fondness of Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters, Johnny Lee Hooker, Howling Wolf and assembly of others. Brenda's father would coach her to sing. As an incentive she would surprisingly be mentioned during his performances and sing on stage. After her fathers death in December 1985 she began venturing her own Blues Rhythm music following her fathers steps. Unfortunately after the family tragic loss, Lee Vera kept the family legacy functioning. Raising seven children alone and performing when she could. She performed the Blues Festival at Grant Park June 10, 1999 and recorded for Wolf Records in 1999. She later passed November 1, 1999 leaving the legacy upon the surviving children. Lee Vera was unable to witness her records published and marketed. In 2004 Eddie ''Big-Town Playboy'' Taylor Sr. received accolades for his talented Blues Rhythm in Grant Park at Chicago's Blues Festival. His children performed during the event in remembrance of him. Brenda performed with friends, family, and collective originators. During her autograph signing she opened for Geovonnie Samuels performing her single ''Who's This Dame.'' Brenda also spoke upon a lasting impact with Romonski Love from a local radio station, following kidney failure. In doing raising awareness for her brother, Eddie Taylor Jr. ''Although Blues Rhythm music are my origins, I find myself reaching out to the youth to empower them.'' Brenda's voice is similar to her mother's Vera.

Indigenous - Broken Lands (2008)
Indigenous
Guitar virtuoso/singer/songwriter Mato Nanji returns as Indigenous with the new album BROKEN LANDS. BROKEN LANDS articulates an intensely personal record that pays tribute to Mato's Native American heritage. Raised as a member of the Nakota Sioux Nation on the Yankton Indian Reservation in South Dakota, Mato first came to musical prominence when he formed Indigenous with his brother, sister and cousin. In 1998, they released their debut, THINGS WE DO, which received wide, mass reception and included the Top 10 smash hit "Now That You're Gone" and the Top 20 rock singles "Things We Do" and "Got To Tell You." After three successful albums, the siblings went their separate ways, and Mato forged ahead as the face of Indigenous releasing his Vanguard debut, Chasing The Sun. CHASING THE SUN'S fiery blues prowess solidified Mato as one of bluesrock's most exciting talents. BROKEN LANDS marks an augmentation of the Blues into Roots, World and Americana territories, by incorporating native percussion, slide, lap steel and acoustic guitars.

Toby Lee - Aquarius (2021)
Toby Lee
At just 16-years-old, Toby Lee has experienced more than many musicians do in a lifetime. He has performed with everyone from Joe Bonamassa and Buddy Guy to McFly, appeared on some of the world's biggest TV shows, and enjoyed viral moments that have resulted in over 400 million video views. The immensely gifted guitarist, vocalist and songwriter is now set to achieve another landmark moment when his long awaited debut album 'Aquarius' is released on June 18th. 'Aquarius' underlines exactly why Toby has become the most hotly tipped blues guitarist of his generation. But while the blues provides the beating heart of the album - see the emotional epic 'The Search For Happiness' or his take on the Leiber/Stoller classic 'Kansas' - it demonstrates that he's a truly versatile musician. Performed with finesse, feeling and a youthful exuberance, 'Aquarius' covers everything from frenetic rockabilly ('Love Bug') to swaggering hard rock ('Real Love') and the pulverising Royal Blood meets Black Stone Cherry attack of 'You Don't Know Me'. His eclectic sound is best encapsulated in the new single 'Take The Wheel'. It's a Gen Z answer to an old school driving anthem: the purity and immediacy of a classic AC/DC riff within a blues-tinged hard rocker that recalls Bad Company.

Jeff Pitchell & Texas Flood - Fat Cigars (1997)
"Texas Flood is often touted (appropriately enough) as a Stevie Ray Vaughan tribute band. After all, an SRV album is the source of the band's name. However, Jeff Pitchell and his band are much more than a cover band. In fact, on Fat Cigars the grand majority of the songs are originals, with the covers being tributes to such big men of rhythm and blues as Phil Spector and Willie Dixon. Further, Pitchell's playing has itself garnered tribute from the "Big Man" himself, Clarence Clemmons. Few, if any, "tribute bands" could make that claim! Though a few songs are similar to each other and perhaps a bit too similar to Vaughan on Fat Cigars (especially "Angel in Black," which riffs very much like Stevie's "Cold Shot"), Pitchell covers it all, from A to ZZ (as in ZZ-Top). Pitchell's fast and clean playing will have listeners seeing Double Trouble, but his New England-Southern style (Pitchell is from Connecticut) also mixes funked-up, low-down blues with all-in runs and all-out rock reminiscent not only of Vaughan, but also of Hendrix, Guy, Clapton, and Cray. With a subtly ghosted vocal rolling out simple, honest lyrics, Pitchell and his "Texas" bandmates tell it like it is. And it is, in a word, "fat."

Smokehouse - Hot Rocks (1998)
Florida Swamp Blues…. that's the music of Smokehouse.
The lowdown guitar sound of Robert ''Town Crier'' Thomas. The deep Blues vocals and harp playing of Anthony ''Packrat'' Thompson that make you think of the pine flatwoods and cypress bottoms of Central Florida. The swamp sound of Baton Rouge has spread and taken root in these steamy Florida lowlands. The Town Crier is from New Smyrna Beach; Packrat is from Lake Helen. Although they have shared bandstands since the late 1970's, It wasn't until 1988 that they began to explore their common roots and their love of the Blues. They recruited Gary and Ture to provide a fat bottom and they began to hypnotize audiences throughout the South-East with their simple, straight-forward and powerful music. Don't expect Rock-Blues pyrotechnics of trick arrangements… or even the familiar, horn-lead King Snake sound! This is straight down-home Blues, played with emotion and conviction. The Swamp Blues… Florida style and as only Smokehouse can play'em!
Cadillac in the Swamp is a torrid, steaming album, powered by the gutsy, powerful songwriting and singing of harpist Anthony Thompson. Smokehouse reworks the deep, swampy groove of New Orleans and Delta blues, adding the electric energy of Chicago blues. Thompson is a raw, greasy harmonica player, evoking the classic licks of Little Walter. He's not as good a singer — his range is quite limited — but he is a forceful and emotional vocalist and he's one hell of a songwriter; unlike many of his contemporaries, he is not afraid of tackling big social issues. Guitarist Robert Thomas is equally impressive, spitting out firey solos and muscular riffs throughout the record. That musical dexterity and sinewy energy shines throughout Cadillac in the Swamp, a first-rate modern blues album.
Edge of the Swamp marks the fourth release for this Southern Florida blues-rock band. Opening for such acts as Taj Mahal, Koko Taylor, Noble "Thin Man" Watts, Kenny Neal, James Peterson and Lester Chambers has enabled the band-comprised of bassist Thomas "Doc Holiday" Westray, drummer Aaron "Pop" Watson, harmonica/lead vocalist Anthony "Packrat" Thompson (author of 11 of 12 cuts on CD) and guitarist Robert "Lightning Boy" Thomas-to further refine their sound and mature into a decent sounding blues band.
Thompson's vocals are deep, rough (a.k.a. John Lee Hooker) and contemporary. The groove is filled with mid-tempo beats and Jimmy Reed influenced guitars along with steady and tight drumming from Watson. Highlights include "Credit Card Blues" and "Hoodoo Lover." Thompson relinquishes lead vocals once on the CD ("What's Your Flavor Baby") and it helps to add a nice dimension to the band's overall repetitive but derivative sound. They should do more of this in the future.

General Musashi - Achtung Starkstromkabel (2008)
The Ljubljana-Dolenjska group General Musashi released their debut four years ago. Various events paved the way for the break until this summer, when they presented their second album Achtung Starkstromkabel. The band cultivates a fondness for the music of the southern states of the USA, which is based on the blues, and adds rock elements to it. As a result, the songs are also striking and organic, the kind that real rock listeners love. The work of the General Musashi group was presented by the singer Jernej Škrabec, with whom the leader and editor Jernej Vene spoke.

Matt Woods And The Thunderbolts - Be My Friend (2007)
Matt Woods
The great Mississippi Fred McDowell once said, “I don’t play no rock ‘n’ roll.” The same can be said about Matt Woods and The Thunderbolts who proclaim on their new album: “You want some rock ‘n’ roll, but you’re gonna get a blues attack.”
Since their formation in 2005, singer-guitarist Matt Woods, bassist Scott Cochran and drummer Michael Swanger have carved a niche for themselves as uncompromising purveyors of traditional blues. However, their admiration for the blues masters goes beyond mere imitation as they have created their own timeless sound and songs...
