Bert Wray Blues - Gut Bucket Radio (2017)

                                                                Bert Wray Blues
Bert Wray Blues came to me on a tip from a friend. Don de Leaumont, who has been my friend since 2009 when we met at an Emory University seminar about the music of Bob Dylan, told me one day that I needed to hear this blues album by his friend in Charlotte North Carolina. Because of our friendship I told him to hook me up with it. Don sent me "Gutbucket Radio" that same day, and I listened to the first three songs.....which was all the time I had. The next day my brain was full of other chores and other music and it wasn't for another 6 days that I remembered and listened to the rest of the album. But at least there was one bit of good news--that second day I listened to it from the beginning! The first three songs sounded even stronger than they had the first time, and there was no letdown as I heard the rest of it.

Bert Wray is the leader of this band. He wrote the seven songs, sings and plays guitar and harmonica. Filling out the band are Dave Wall, on bass; and Mitch Cooper, on drums. They play a tight, yet loose-limbed music together that is blues, and folk, and rock 'n roll and country all at once. It is also utterly captivating. There are no weak songs here, no lame-o guitar wanking, nothing that makes me reach for the remote to hit "skip." Just fine music, honestly made by real human musicians who love to play.
It really reminds me of another album I was given by a friend in about 2013: The Mojo Roots, from Columbia MO, were a fine bunch of guys and they made a really fine album they made called "What Kind Of Fool." I was knocked out. That album very rarely left my cd player for the next 18 months, even though The Mojo Roots broke up after the cd was out for about a year.

Augie Meyers - August In New York (Expanded Edition) (2020)

                                                                    Augie Meyers
Augie Meyers' style and his Vox Continental has become one of music's most distinctive keyboard sounds around. Augie can be heard with the Sir Douglas Quintet, Texas Tornados, Meyers’ solo efforts as well as on landmark albums by Bob Dylan (”Time Out of Mind” and “Love and Theft”) and John Hammond (“Wicked Grin”). Echoes of the Meyers' style and sound can be heard in the music of the Doors, the Kinks, the Animals as well as the Beatles just to name a few.

Rolling out of San Antonio, Texas in the early 60's, the Sir Douglas Quintet, a musical partnership formed with Doug Sahm, brought such hit tunes as "Mendocino" and "She's About a Mover."

By fusing Tex-Mex, Conjunto and soulful rock together along with the power of Meyers' distinctive Vox organ, an impact that is still being felt in rock 'n' roll today. While the Sir Douglas Quintet never broke up and never succumbed to the lure of the oldies circuit, when Meyers and his musical cohorts decided they wanted to do something different, they did. That led to the formation of The Texas Tornados and a Grammy award-winning South Texas sound. Meyers worked steadily with Sahm until the kinetic guitarist/vocalist passed away in 1999. Meyers has always pursued projects that interest him as an individual and as a collaborator and has long refused to lock himself into one style of music.

The Electric Panthers - And This Is Blues (2016)

                                                            The Electric Panthers
Five young musicians from Regensburg who developed their own interpretation of electric blues.

The blues of the streets of Chicago receive elements of funk. Exciting rhythms and impulsive groove bring a new role to the genre.

Inspired by the wild elegance of the big black cat and the electrifying funk of the iconic "Muddy Waters" of 1968, they never lose sight of their vision of carrying the true blues.

Soulard Blues Band - Live At The Great Grizzly Bear (1998)

                                                               Soulard Blues Band
“Maybe the real reason the Soulard Blues Band continues to win Music Awards year after year, though, is the group’s refusal to let a strict definition of the blues limit their musical horizons. Like jazz, blues seems to have infinite shadings and variations. And SBB has always been able to mingle musical genres with the best of ’em.”
Terry Perkins.

Vince Converse - One Step Ahead (1999)

                                                                 Vince Converse
Houston-born singer/songwriter/guitarist Vince Converse began his musical career while still a sophomore in high school. He and his band, Sunset Heights, played blues-inflected rock in venues that he was still too young to patronize, appeared on international TV, and toured with acts like Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Johnny Winter, Peter Green, and Fats Domino. After playing with the group for seven years, Converse struck out on his own, moved to South Dakota, and released a solo album, 1999's Nineteen Fifteen, named after the birth year of Muddy Waters.

Another in a long line of electric blues guitarists influenced primarily by Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Vince Converse turns in a flawed but promising debut with One Step Ahead. His vocals are a bit strained and wanting in power and soulfulness at times, and the musical backing could use a looser, funkier feel, but Converse's guitar work is stinging and evocative, suggesting that with time, he'll grow into a first-rate bluesman.

North Mississippi Allstars - Do It Like We Used To Do (2009)

                                                          North Mississippi Allstars
The North Mississippi Allstars' youth belies its history, as documented on Do It Like We Used to Do. Over the course of two CDs and a DVD featuring archival material, interviews and concert footage, the band displays reverence for the music it plays, without ever taking itself too seriously.
Reasonably priced in skeletal packaging with colorful and information-laden graphics simulating a scrapbook, this three-disc set ostensibly covers the first twelve years of NMA history, from 1996 to 2008. Yet this anthology spans more than just a story of a band; it's a musical tradition, of which guitarist/vocalist Luther Dickinson, drummer/multi-instrumentalist Cody Dickinson and bassist Chris Chew are a part.

The antique sound quality on much of the first disc suits the earthy likes of Fred McDowell's chain-gang song, "I'm in Jail." The NMA's moniker takes on a whole new meaning during the course of this compilation, as the core trio is joined in turn by various instrumentalists and accompanists, including full-fledged units like Otha Turner's Fife and Drum band and famed musician/producer Jim Dickinson (Rolling Stones, Big Star, Ry Cooder, The Replacements), father of the NMA siblings.

Recordings sites range from the intimate likes of New York's Beacon Theatre in 2006, where the band draws upon Jimi Hendrix in "Hear My Train A-Comin,'" to the more expansive eclectic likes of Tennessee's 2004 Bonnaroo Music Festival, where the Hill Country Revue delves deeper into the roots of this music with the aid of musicians R.L. Boyce and Duwayne Burnside.

Luther Dickinson oversaw this exhaustive compilation, and he's both sufficiently objective and astute enough to include the acoustic likes of "Goin' Home ML," a lilting sing-song piece offset by the hammering riff of "Keep the Devil Down." Ever so slight overlap comes in the form of selections from the band's studio release, Hernando (Songs of the South, 2008), such as "I Would Love to Be a Hippy," and "Mizzip," which was recorded at The Fox Theater in Boulder, Colorado for the double-CD concert recording Boulderado (Songs of the South, 2009). Yet none of the anthologized material becomes redundant in this context.

The Shadows - The Dark Side Of The Shadows (1995)

                                                                   The Shadows
Known best for their longtime residence at Blind Willie's, a popular blues club in Atlanta, the Shadows released several albums during the '90s before the untimely death of singer/guitarist Mike Lorenz. Shadows bassist Roger Gregory opened Blind Willie's in 1986 with Eric King. The club, which is located in the Virginia-Highland neighborhood of Atlanta, hosted many local blues artists such as Billy Wright, Grady "Fats" Jackson, Sandra Hall, and Chicago Bob. In 1988, Chicago Bob, who was also a Blind Willie's resident, recorded an album called Just Your Fool that featured the Shadows as his backing band. A few years later, in 1992, the Shadows -- comprised of Gregory, Lorenz, harp/saxman Albey Scholl, and drummer Tom Chavers -- released an album of their own, Party Tuff or Stay Home!, that Ichiban released. Several successive albums followed: It Ain't Easy Bein' Sleazy (1993), Steppin' to the Shadows (1994), Dreamtime (1994), Dark Side of the Shadows (1995), Pale Interpretators (1997), and One Night of Sin (2000). Unfortunately, Lorenz died an accidental death on July 3, 2001, when his car caught on fire behind his home after he'd fallen asleep with the car running.

Mad Timothy - A Very Snug Joiner (2018)

                                                                     Mad Timothy
In these digital and interconnected times, it is surprising to find a record from the 60s-70s that has not yet been "discovered" and documented. That is the case of a deteriorated LP titled "A very snug joiner" by some Mad Timothy. In the words of Steve Krakow (Plastic Crimewave, Galactic Zoo): "A friend found this interesting demo album without a cover in a second hand store. There is no information. Nobody knows anything, not even some of the biggest collectors. Musically, It carries a Blue Cheer / Majic Ship / Mount Rushmore vibe but with a very raw vibe and even some more acoustic-folk songs. All done in a delightfully primitive way. I think people deserve to know it. "

So, even after all our efforts to locate the group were unsuccessful, we decided that this rarity deserved to be shared and rescued, in the hope that in the wake of this issue, some member of the group will contact us.

In collaboration with Steve Krakow's Galactic Archive, we present the first reissue of this dark acetate from the late '60s / early' 70s, directly salvaged from an antique shop in Chicago and of which only one copy is known. Music? Crude and tough heavy alcoholic blues – psych in the vein of Blue Cheer, Majic Ship, Mount Rushmore, Houston Fearless, Apryl Fool, Sweet Slag, Mutzie, Aum, Screw, or some teenage Canned Heat.

Dr. Hector And The Groove Injectors - Prescription (1987)

                                                                    Dr. Hector
Jacksonville, Florida-based Dr. Hector and The Groove Injectors have a reputation for being a fantastic road band, a throwback to some of the great Southern rock bands of the 60's and 70's. This is not surprising since guitarist Dru Lombar served for 10 years as the leader of the Southern rock band Grinderswitch, along with his work as a songwriter and session player for Capricorn Records in Macon, Georgia, working with some of the immortals of Southern rock. However, unlike their rock predecessors, Dr. Hector and The Groove Injectors make their living playing blues and R+B.

Matyas Pribojszki Band - Boogie On The Ship (2010)

                                                            Matyas Pribojszki Band
"Mátyás Pribojszki is one of the finest young harp players to emerge from Eastern Europe. He plays both traditional and contemporary blues harmonica styles with a practiced assurance which belies his years and his tone; phrasing and timing are right on the money. This is a man to watch!" - Steve Baker. This is a very dynamic, real and fun blues album that is full of great improvisations, and solos. Mátyás is an impressive, virtuoso harmonica player and has an original style. He also has a very nice singing voice, and his band kicks ass. While Mátyás Pribojszki Band may not be a household Blues name in the States, they play many festivals in Europe.

Denny Freeman - Blues Cruise (1986)

                                                                  Denny Freeman
"Rockin' with B.B." and "Steelin' Berry's" not only reveal two of Freeman's major influences but do justice to Mr. King and Chuck Berry -- the latter featuring a fine steel guitar turn by Jimmie Vaughan. The melodic "Denny's Blues" is also a standout. Three lackluster vocal numbers (one each by Angela Strehli, Kim Wilson and Bill Carter) detract from the continuity (and level) of Freeman's instrumental set.

RIP DENNY FREEMAN

Denny Freeman - A Tone For My Sins (1997) reposted

                                                                 Denny Freeman
Denny Freeman was a mainstay of the Austin TX music scene in the 1970's and 1980's, and as such, had a major influence on Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughan. In fact, Denny and Stevie played together in Paul Ray's band The Cobras. Eleven of the twelve tracks on this recording are penned by Freeman and he achieves diversity through a variety of blues styles, as well a, a variety of soundscapes. The blues offered here varies from straight-ahead blues to blues-rock to a little country-blues and on the final track, a leaning towards jazz-blues. On a few tracks Freeman overdubs his own Hammond organ or piano, but these never compete with the guitar as the main instrument.

Don Preston - Bluse (1969)

                                                                   Don Preston
Where has this fine late 60’s blues album been all my life? I know Mr. Preston (no relation to the Don Preston who worked with Frank Zappa) from his work with Leon Russell and Joe Cocker, and I’ve owned his superb STILLROCK album on Enterprise since the mid-70’s. Also, I remember his 1974 LP for Shelter getting FM airplay in Denver and Boulder back in the day (Preston is originally a fellow Colorado boy!), but I don’t remember seeing this in my decades of used-record hunting (or maybe I’d spent my day’s money before coming across this in the stacks?). I just stumbled across it on You Tube today. However, the blues is timeless, and so many great blues albums were made in the 1960’s that it’s inevitable some would not get the attention they deserved.

Preston is a soulful vocalist and a powerful guitarist (just look at the quality of the people he’s played with over the decades….Google his name), and this album—-one of two he recorded for A&M—-is sure to please anyone who enjoys second-generation late 60’s blues. I’m listening to it a third time this afternoon!

This would be the perfect album to pair with, say, the PACIFIC GAS AND ELECTRIC album on Kent, though it’s rootsier and more satisfying, IMHO.

Thanks to Don Preston for such a fine and satisfying album—-I hope a lot of people have been enjoying it for the last 52 years, even though I’m a bit late in discovering it.

Settle back, pour a quality micro-brew, and pretend you’re in a small club—-this album sounds like the kind of live blues concert that leaves you feeling satisfied.

Vince Converse, Michael Hornbuckle - Here Come the Blues (2009)

                                                Vince Converse, Michael Hornbuckle
Houston-born singer/songwriter/guitarist Vince Converse began his musical career while still a sophomore in high school. He and his band, Sunset Heights, played blues-inflected rock in venues that he was still too young to patronize, appeared on international TV, and toured with acts like Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Johnny Winter, Peter Green, and Fats Domino. After playing with the group for seven years, Converse struck out on his own, moved to South Dakota, and released a solo album, 1999's Nineteen Fifteen, named after the birth year of Muddy Waters.

Michael Hornbuckle has been bringing blues and rock music to people for 18 years. Homegrown in the Mile High City, as was his father, legendary bluesman Bobby Hornbuckle who had Michael backing him on drums at 12 years old. While Bobby's journey ended in 96', Michael took over the torch. When inherited Bobby's old gibson 335, some say a piece of Bobby's soul, and ability to play guitar were transmitted. Michael's quick to point out however, "The truth is, I spent all my time playing guitar cuz I loved to play. I don't know about all that other spooky stuff, but who knows"

Bluefrog and His Band - Soulful Of Blues (2005)

                                                           Bluefrog and His Band
Frontman Patrick “BlueFrog” Ellis of San Diego, California, has been entertaining audiences around the world since 1997 with his blend of Roots, Americana, Rock and Roll, Southern Fried Rock, and Juke Joint Boogie Blues.  A tribute to the music that made America “GREAT".  His sound has been compared to the “The Doors meets the Rolling Stones”, “Kim Wilson meets Led Zeppelin”, “Blues meets Rock”, and “Dire Straits meets John Cougar”.

Combining the Blues harmonica influences of Little Walter, Jimmy Reed, Kim Wilson, Sonny Boy Williams, and Rod Piazza, with the guitar and keyboard styles of SRV, The Allman Brothers, The Doors, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and his own original music, Patrick has gained a solid reputation with his crowd pleasing band.

As a Navy frogman stationed in Germany, Patrick earned the nickname “BlueFrog” while playing the local expat joints.  In 2000 he returned to San Diego, and with Alan Adamson formed the original “BlueFrog and Company” as the Tuesday night "House Band" for Buffalo Joe's in the Gas Lamp quarter of downtown San Diego.

Serving in the Navy as a “frogman” Patrick was once again ordered overseas shortly after 9/11, eventually ending up as member of "Special Operations Command Korea"...and land locked.  Patrick toured for the United Servicemen’s Organization (USO) throughout South Korea performing for thousands of U.S. military personnel.

With the release of his first CD “Soulful of Blues” in February 2005, the album received great reviews from Garageband.com, especially for its three original songs "Baby Come Back Home," “Daddy’s Going Uptown,” and “BlueFrog Boogie”.  Patrick’s latest release “Under the Influence” (of music) is already creating a stir for the diversity of styles selected.
Patrick is home and has put away his duffle bag and fins.  He's back kicking up the dance floor with his high energy Blues and Rock and Roll.  As he always says, "It's not about me...it's about the music."
