Follaje - Clásicos Del Blues (1998)

                                                                    Follaje

Formed in 1981, Follaje has wanted to maintain a definite line regarding the genre of Blues and Rhythmic Blues with the idea of setting a precedent about the main root of what is the current Rock scene. The constant work of the band is aimed at continuing to promote the Blues to contribute to the development of musical culture and on the other hand the pleasure of interpreting this music that is born from the soul.

The group began playing the classics: Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Howlin Wolf, Robert Johnson, John Lee Hooker, John Mayall (within the English Blues stream), however the concern went further, so which continued the change to be a band with its own compositions, more linked to our reality and everyday experiences.

The Prime Movers Blues Band (2019)

                                                  The Prime Movers Blues Band
Formed in the summer of 1965 by brothers Michael and Dan Erlewine, The Prime Movers Blues Band’s dedication was the stuff of legend. Refusing to adopt a faux British Invasion look and turning down an offer from Motown, they played their style of Chicago-inspired blues relentlessly around the Detroit area. Featuring the “raw power” of a young James Osterberg on drums (who also lends vocals on their sizzling styling of “I’m A Man”), this first-ever collection of The Prime Movers Blues Band’s recordings includes liner notes from bandleader Michael Erlewine!

Before James Osterberg was Iggy Pop, before Robert Sheff went by “Blue” Gene Tyranny, and before J.C. Crawford whipped crowds of MC5 fans into a frenzy, they all played in the Erlewine brothers’ Butterfield Blues Band-influenced outfit, hustling around the Motor City and more. Previously unavailable in any format, Modern Harmonic is proud to present this inaugural offering from The Prime Movers Blues Band on both CD and LP fittingly pressed at Third Man in Detroit.

Featuring Iggy Pop with his pals who gave him that name!

The Prime Movers played across the Midwest. In 1966, the band attended blues clubs in Chicago where they had the opportunity to see musicians like Little Walter, Magic Sam and Big Walter Horton perform live. Discovered by a subsidiary of Motown Records that wanted to promote them as a band of white boys playing "black music," they refused to cooperate, preferring to study and play the classic style of chicago blues rather than songs composed by the label. The consequence of this was that they never made professional recordings. Only amateur recordings were made by the band and fans. These recordings were recently discovered, and include Iggy Pop singing Muddy Waters' song "I'm a Man."

They contributed significantly to the first two "Ann Arbor Blues" festivals of 1969 and 1970, which were the first and largest blues festivals in the country. Michael Erlewine interviewed several of the artists and the spirit of the festivals led to the idea that leveraged the "Ann Arbor Blues & Jazz Festival" with editions in the years 1972, 1973 and 1974. Some members of the band got involved in editing. from 1972.

In 1967, the band toured the West Coast and spent the Summer of Love in San Francisco, living at Sausalito Heliport and playing at places like The Matrix, The Straight Theater, The Haight A, New Orleans House and The Fillmore West, where they opened a show for Cream.

Joe Survival Caruso - You Never Had These Blues (2015)

                                                         Joe Survival Caruso
This live recording flows effortlessly from New Orleans Big City Blues to Deep in the Swamp Delta Blues to R&B and back again, reflecting the Artist's decades of life experiences; pain, disillusionment, passion, betrayal and love. It's the BLUES!

When you hail from New Orleans, the term “survival” isn’t used lightly.
Among musicians, the survival instinct also is a notion that inspires respect.
So it’s fitting that Central Florida blues practitioner Joe “Survival” Caruso has adopted the word into his name. It’s more than a nickname to a veteran bandleader and New Orleans native who not only managed to miss Hurricane Katrina’s wrath in his hometown, but also has built a reputation as one of the most solid bluesmen in the Southeast.
It takes work to build such high regard. Long nights on stages at cozy watering holes such as Orlando Brewing, where the eight songs on Caruso’s new live album, “You Never Had These Blues,” were recorded on one memorable, if rainy, night.
“I gotta play these blues and make some money,” Caruso declares in “See You in the Mornin’,” the breezy shuffle that opens the album.
As that song’s hard-driving beat indicates, Caruso favors a straight-ahead foundation that showcases the understated power of bassist Auggie August and drummer/producer - Reno Mussatto. It’s a winning strategy.
Augmented by guitarist Herb Ransburg, the band embraces the Mississippi Delta with the greasy “Thunder and Lightnin’.” And the insistent bass and drums on the closing “Things Ain’t Been the Same” would have fit nicely on one of the definitive singles of the Chess Records era.
Elsewhere, Caruso mines other reliable influences with style:
With its catchy two-chord riff, “Waitin’ On Love” exudes the energy of a seminal Motown hit.
Meanwhile, the title track simmers, rather than steams, above a shimmering guitar part that might be the missing link between blues and jazz. On the frisky “Yearnin’ and Burnin’,” Caruso nudges the music toward funk, a destination that he reaches on “Standin’ on Solid Ground.”
Along the way, Caruso shows a knack for catchy melodies, such as the big, sunny chorus in “You Belong to Him.” It’s a sad song, yes, about a guy whose woman left him. Yet the street-corner doo-wop chorus is utterly joyous, even in the face of such news.

Bluesman Mike & The Blues Review Band - Mo' Blues (2018)

                                                             Bluesman Mike
The Blues Review Band was formed out of Bluesman Mike's passion for the blues. In New Year of 2007 he decided to go back to his roots by spending his birthday gift on a bass guitar and soon started jamming with a great friend and co-founder of the band, Doug Hill. It was one of those evenings while they're jamming that they decided to form The Blues Review Band. The 1st original members were Scott Stuk (drums), Avi Edelson (Keyboard), Doug Hill (Lead guitar) and Bluesman Mike on vocals and bass. Soon, they're all over the valley doing their love and passion - playing the blues and becoming one of the hottest blues bands out!!! They all had a blast playing all over town but Scott had to go to college and their full time jobs required both Doug and Avi to leave the band. Now Bluesman Mike is jamming and doing gigs with Bobby Nealy, a seasoned and veteran keyboard player from Phoenix, AZ who has been playing for the last 30+ years including playing with the likes of Archie Bell and the Drells, along with his new lead guitar player who is another veteran by the name of Sugar Bear, from Philadelphia who incidentally has been performing for the last 20+ years as a studio musician as well as on stage, a producer, and song writer. To round out, and keeping the band on the one, is his new but also a veteran drummer, Tim Robinson. Tim was born in Germany and has been playing drums all his life. He played with Koko Taylor, Joey DeFrancisco, & Darlene Love. Tim has performed at the Monterrey Blues Festival in 2003 & 2004.

Janiva Magness - My Bad Luck Soul (1999)

                                                             Janiva Magness
The pliant voice of Detroit-born songstress Janiva Magness enhanced Kid Ramos' latest CD, so much so that I simply had to check out her new release My Bad Luck Soul. Glad I did, because this is a fine collection of guitar-centric jump and blues.

Magness has relocated to the Left Coast and adopted the region's swinging blues style. Magness is an appealing vocalist capable of lusty passion (" It's Love Baby," "Happy Hour"), gutbucket growling ("My Bad Luck Soul," "Seven Long Days") and jazzy behind-the-beat phrasing (Billie Holiday's "Billie's Blues"). Unlike many blues divas, Magness knows not to overload a song with attitude. Her singing is subtle but intense.

The presence of husband Jeff Turmes is felt throughout My Bad Luck Soul. A fine songwriter and instrumentalist (guitar, bass, sax), Turmes is merely an adequate vocalist. The weakest tracks here are the ones on which he sings lead. Have to wonder why he even bothered to open his mouth when his wife has such great pipes.

Instrumentally speaking, this CD is superb. Axemen Enrico Crivellaro and "Kid" Ramos deliver impressive performances throughout. Pianists Karen Hammack and Red Young help to keep things swinging, and drummer Ed Mann is a dynamo. The song selection is excellent, too, but the sound is somewhat tinny. Still, it should only dissuade the most discerning audiophiles.

The Tightropes - On Fire! (2019)

                                                             The Tightropes
It is striking that the (blues) rock sound from the 70s continues to appeal to our contemporary young generation. Many a band is influenced by Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Led Zeppelin or Mountain.

The same goes for the Groningen trio The Tightropes. This band was founded in 2011 and has now delivered under the motto "I am there for I am" a full-length album on which, according to their own words, they bring music in the tradition of Jimi Hendrix of Cream.

Well I have to say that I don't really see the sound of Cream on this album but the sound of Jimi Hendrix indeed. It is not for nothing that this trio can regularly be found at Hendrix Tributes. The band consists of Marco Boers (vocals, guitar), Dennis Hemstra (bass) and Alan Luring (drums).

They are responsible for a rock-hard blues rock album that opens with Getting Old. A very hard and heavy blues rock shuffle with super heavy guitar riffs. The sound of this song draws to the massive sound of Leslie West’s Mountain. Marco's sneaky vocals must make every effort to rise above the crushing grooving sound barrier. Of course, a screaming and groaning guitar solo is not missing in this song.
Thundering drums, along with a working bass, usher in Babies. This song is clearly in the Hendrix corner ("Fire"), but interspersed with more modest jazzy licks. However, heavy funky rock has the upper hand. Make It Count is a driving funky blues rock song in which the sound of the forgotten funk rockers The Spin Doctors goes hand in hand with ingenious rock a la Sjako! So rock with a very own sound full of separate rhythm changes and breaks. Marco Boers gives his own interpretation of the Hendrix sound here, howling, cutting and roaring raw. In Good Night Sleep the band uses a super heavy looming blues rock song that also has room for some psychedelic elements.
Kicks is again a funky variation on the Hendrix sound. An equally funky, maybe even funkier, song in which the band also plays around with the necessary p-Funk. Marco Boers is again in the foreground with his moaning loud sound.
Jimi Hendrix had his "Red House" and The Tightropes have their Slow Blues. Just as modest and bluesy as the Hendrix song. Marco’s guitar playing varies from warm jazzy to blazing hard. An impressive slow blues!
Finally we get 18th BIrthday. A loosely grooving funk rock song in which the funky blues sound of guitarist Danny Adler (go check this man, or his band Roogalator, out for yourself!). A heady groover with hard staccato distortion guitar riffs.

This Groningen trio keeps the 70's blues rock sound alive in an exciting, impressive and, above all, pruning-hard way!

Jimi Hendrix - Songs For Groovy Children The Fillmore East Concerts (2019)

                                                                Jimi Hendrix
This is Hendrix with his ‘Band of Gypsys’ – a trio of himself, Billy Cox on bass and Electric Flag drummer Buddy Miles. They group debuted with four concerts, over two evenings, that literally marked the end of the 1960s and ushered in the 1970s. These shows were at the Fillmore East in Manhattan – two on New Year’s Eve 1969 and two on New Year’s Day 1970, each of which were professionally recorded.

The live album Band of Gypsys album was issued only four months later, in March 1970 and was edited and sequenced from songs performed during the two Fillmore sets on 1 January 1970. But it only featured six songs. These news sets take things considerably further, as you might expect.

Mississippi Mudsharks - Train Rolls On (2006)

                                                         Mississippi Mudsharks
Formed in 1992 by guitarist Scottie "Mad Dog" Blinn and drummer Tom Essa, the Mississippi Mudsharks were favorites on the San Diego roots rock scene for over half-a-decade before applying the brakes in 2000, which makes Train Rolls On a reunion of sorts. A power trio (Mike Lars handles the bass duties) specializing in a kind of punk blues driven by Blinn's gruff, Wolfman Jack-like vocals and blistering slide playing, the Sharks open the throttle here on the title track and then never look back, blasting through an impressive set of bluesy voodoo rock. Among the highlights are the classic "Train Rolls On," the template for most of what these guys do, "Throw It in the Hole," which sounds like a rocking Tom Waits out in front of a top-notch power trio, the spooky and gliding "Devil's Road," given additional eerie atmosphere by guest Johnny Smokes' pedal steel playing, and the straight blues "Can't Put Down the Drink," which shows that Blinn can gear down and play this stuff clean when he chooses to. This is no-nonsense punk blues with pedigree and attitude, but filled too with subtle variety and flashes of humor, and it shows an intelligent band with clear purpose behind all the bluster and power.

Big Band of Brothers - A Jazz Celebration of the Allman Brothers Band (2019)

                                                           Big Band of Brothers
The best music is timeless and malleable, lending itself to interpretation. Such is the music of The Allman Brothers Band.  As you know, this is the 50th anniversary of the release of their first studio album.  This year has seen multiple Allman Brothers-related projects, many of which were covered on these pages. This may be the most unique of them all, hearing a 15-piece big band replicate and interpret classic Allman Brother material, often with various horns playing those indelibly memorable guitar lines on  Big Band of Brothers:  A Jazz Celebration of the Allman Brothers Band.

It’s somewhat surprising that more projects like these don’t come along. Executive producer John Harvey mentions in the opening liner notes that he was inspired by Bob Curnow’s 1991 L.A. Big Band recording, The Music of Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays, known songs performed in a big band context. He states that he’s always wanted to do a similar project of early original Allman Brothers material but was unable to do so until connecting with producer Mark Lanter, who he knew as a drummer in the University of Alabama Jazz Ensemble from the ‘70s. Lanter plays the drums here throughout the album. Further connections were made, notably co-producer Charles Driebe, who brought Ruthie Foster to the project.

The packaging is wonderful in that the back cover details the soloists for each piece. Six of them are graced with high profile guests as Marc Broussard handles the vocals on “Statesboro Blues,” and in searing style on “Whipping Post.” Foster has never sounded better than she does on “It’s Not My Cross to Bear” and “Don’t Keep Me Wondering.” Those alone are worth a listen to this entire recording. Lauded trombonist and multiple Downbeat winner for that instrument, Wycliffe Gordon, delivers an impeccable soprano trombone solo on “Don’t Want You No More” and wrote the very unusual arrangement for “Statesboro Blues.” Former ABB guitarist Jack Pearson has the riveting slide part in “Stand Back.”

As good as all those performances are, however, none should be surprising. The surprises come in the soloists from the big band, 15 chairs and 22 different players. In other words, some are playing on certain selections while others are aboard throughout. The instrumental tracks are equally as compelling as the vocal ones whether it’s “Hot “Lanta” (four soloists), “Dreams” (solo from trombonist Chad Fisher),  “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed (five soloists), and the closing epic 12 minute version of “Les Bres In A Minor” with its improvisational pre-amble and the piece itself that features four soloists. Among the many stunning solos are Kelly O’Neal’s alto on ”Don’t Want You No More” and the Nathan McLeod and Jimmy Bowland dueling sax solos heard in separate channels on “Don’t Keep Me Wondering.” At least nine band members solo at least once.

While many would not associate the Allman Brothers with jazz despite their improvisational gifts, there are some interesting recollections from ABB band members about the group’s leanings toward jazz. Gregg Allman early on told journalist Bob Beatty, “Jaimoe turned all of us on to so much neat stuff. He gave us a proper education about jazz and got us into Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Kind of Blue was always on the turntable – Duane really got his head around that album – and he also seriously dug Coltrane’s My Favorite Things. Warren Haynes related this in 2013, “It’s interesting when you think about Duane’s roots in blues and R&B. As he was growing as a musician, jazz musicians were becoming more and more important to him. He talked a lot about how important Coltrane was in influencing him. It’s almost a cliché to say that you’ve been influenced by John Coltrane these days because it’ so obvious that he’s an icon. But for somebody in the early ‘70s to actually take that influence into a rock or pop sensibility was quite a stretch. Perhaps he helped to make Coltrane a universal influence in ways he didn’t even realize, the same way that people like Duane and Clapton contributed to the rediscovery of Robert Johnson.”

Listening to these jazz interpretations, Duane would likely be proud. It’s almost like hearing the band all over again, as the big band recreates that initial excitement and deep feeling of soul that this writer recalls hearing the first ABB studio album in a dorm room 50 years ago.

Clarence Carter - Easy (2007)

                                                             Clarence Carter
Singer Clarence Carter exemplified the gritty, earthy sound of Muscle Shoals R&B, fusing the devastating poignancy of the blues with a wicked, lascivious wit to create deeply soulful music rooted in the American South of the past and the present. Born January 14, 1936, in Montgomery, AL, Carter was blind from birth. He immediately gravitated to music, teaching himself guitar by listening to the blues classics of John Lee Hooker, Lightnin' Hopkins, and Jimmy Reed. He majored in music at Alabama State University, learning to transcribe charts and arrangements in Braille.

With blind classmate Calvin Scott, Carter in 1960 formed the duo Clarence & Calvin, signing to the Fairlane label to release "I Wanna Dance But I Don't Know How" the following year. After the 1962 release of "I Don't Know (School Girl)," Clarence & Calvin left Fairlane for the Duke imprint, renaming themselves the C & C Boys for their label debut, "Hey Marvin." In all, the duo cut four Duke singles, none of them generating more than a shrug at radio -- finally, in 1965 they traveled to Rick Hall's Fame Studio in Muscle Shoals, AL, paying $85 to record the wrenching ballad "Step by Step" and its flip side, "Rooster Knees and Rice." Atlanta radio personality Zenas Sears recommended Clarence & Calvin to Atlantic producer Jerry Wexler, and the label issued "Step by Step" on its Atco subsidiary -- the record failed to chart, and the duo was once again looking for a label.

Backed by a four-piece combo dubbed the Mello Men, Clarence & Calvin spent the first half of 1966 headlining Birmingham's 2728 Club. One Friday night in June while returning home from the nightspot, the group suffered an auto accident that left Scott critically injured, initiating an ugly falling-out with Carter over the resulting medical bill. In the meantime, Carter continued as a solo act, signing to Hall's Fame label for 1967's "Tell Daddy," which inspired Etta James' response record, "Tell Mama." The superb popcorn-soul effort "Thread the Needle" proved a minor crossover hit, and after one additional Fame release, "The Road of Love," Carter returned to Atlantic with "Looking for a Fox," issued in early 1968. "Looking for a Fox" proved the first of many singles to slyly reference the singer's visual impairment, not to mention showcasing the libidinous impulses that dominate many of his most popular records.

But few performances better typified the emerging Carter aesthetic than "Slip Away," a superior cheating ballad spotlighting his anguished, massive baritone alongside the remarkably sinuous backing of Fame's exemplary backing band. The record was a Top Ten hit, and its follow-up, "Too Weak to Fight," also went gold, solidifying Carter's newfound commercial appeal. He ended 1968 with a superbly funky Christmas single, the raunchy "Back Door Santa," in addition to mounting a national tour featuring backing vocalist Candi Staton, who later became Carter's wife as well as a soul star in her own right.

The percolating "Snatching It Back" was Carter's first Atlantic release of 1969 -- its B-side, a remake of James Carr's deep soul classic "The Dark End of the Street," remains one of the singer's most potent efforts, drawing on traditional blues and gospel to explore both the absurdity and anguish of infidelity. Subsequent singles including "The Feeling Is Right," "Doing Our Thing," and "Take It Off Him and Put It on Me" were only marginally successful, but in 1970 Carter returned to the Top Ten with the sentimental "Patches," his biggest hit to date. He nevertheless stumbled again with a run of 1971 releases like "Getting the Bills" and "Slipped, Tripped and Fell in Love," and in the wake of "If You Can't Beat 'Em" -- a duet with Staton -- Carter left Atlantic in 1972, returning to Fame with "Back in Your Arms Again."

Released in 1973, the leering "Sixty Minute Man" proved a novelty hit, but in 1975 he attempted to reignite his career at ABC, releasing "Take It All Off" and "Dear Abby" to little notice. By the end of the decade Carter was relegated to small independent labels like Future Stars and Ronn, and in 1980 signed to Venture for the ill-advised "Jimmy's Disco" and "Can We Slip Away Again?" In 1985 he resurfaced on the fledgling Ichiban label, returning to the ribald deep soul of his heyday -- the LP Dr. C.C. earned positive reviews and spawned the hilariously lewd "Strokin'," a major word-of-mouth hit. (A sequel, "Still Strokin'," followed in 1989.) Carter continued recording and touring regularly into the 21st century, maintaining a strong fan base throughout the South.

Johnny Mazz and The Heat - Better Days (2010)

                                                               Johnny Mazz
There are three words to describe Mazz: soulful, emotional, and heartfelt, which is heard in his playing, singing, and songs. Johnny Mazz, a seasoned musician, published song writer, and entertainer, teams up with Joe Heat another seasoned musician, published song writer on drums and percussion to record Johnny Mazz & The Heat's first CD, "Better Days". Produced and recorded by Mazz and Heat at Hot Rod Studios in Brick, New Jersey, this is a must have CD that covers the entire blues genre. You won't be disappointed with this one. Mazz and Heat have bestowed their souls in every song for all to enjoy.

This album basically runs the blues spectrum, going from basic blues to modern rock blues to a taste of delta blues and even to a bit of gospel. Mazz sings and plays with soul and emotion in every song, it's a must have.
