Ernie Williams New York Blues legendIt was in 1938, when Williams was 13, where he strummed his first guitar in a shack on a Virginia Plantation where he picked tobacco by day and practiced his blues skills by night. When he was 19, he moved to Harlem in New York City (with the nine dollars in his pocket that it took him a year to save) to follow his dream. He was a tireless performer, often playing a grueling schedule of up to seven nights a week, which often ranged from amateur nights at the Apollo Theater to shadowy juke joints; this is where he began to make his mark on the blues scene.
Family demands brought him to the Albany area in the 1960s and he began to place his dream on hold while working night and day to support his family. In the 1970s, he formed a new band and began playing in small local venues and hosting blues jams during his free time.
From that point on he became the most recognized performer in the area. He opened shows for B.B. King and performed at places such as Boston’s House of Blues and Buddy Guy‘s Legends in Chicago. Aside from his incredibly busy schedule, he managed to made appearances in magazine and television ads and recorded several CDs, including Sun Goin’ Down (1993), I Remember (1995), Sister and A Night at the Van Dyck (both 1998), Mustang Sally (2001), Something On My Mind (2002), and Live At Revolution Hall (2004).
