The Chitlin Crew from Rotterdam and the surrounding area refers to the so-called Chitlin circuit. That is the name for a collection of clubs in the southern states of the US, where musicians from the late nineteenth century to the sixties of the twentieth century could perform.
A band with the same name had already existed for several years. It ceased to exist, a number of musicians continued as 50 Shades Of Blue. And now Chitlin Crew is back. A completely new band, of which singer / guitarist John Fijan and bassist Dick Bax were also part of the first band of the same name. Chitlin Crew also consists of drummer Loet van Broekhoven, saxophonist / harmonica player Louis Beckers, keyboard player Jordy Visser and guitarist Joris van Leeuwen. During the presentation of the first CD I had the opportunity to see the band live and I was able to determine that it is a great and well-attuned band that can give the audience a very nice evening.
Recently the first CD was released, entitled “Born To Cry”, with eight songs written by Dick and John. It is striking that the band is clearly rougher live than on the record. Not that it is soft and smooth, certainly not. It is clear that the six gentlemen can rock a lot and can also play more sensitive songs. Loet and Dick provide a solid foundation and give the others enough space to show their skills. John has a lithe and pleasant voice, with which he interprets the lyrics in an understandable way. His English pronunciation is not perfect, but that doesn't bother and has its charm again. Louis, Jordy and Joris also stand their ground. My personal favorites are the rocking “Swamp Blues” and the slow blues “Badluck Willy”. A good CD by a great band that deserves to be heard.
