"Time To Go" explores more of WR's early songwriting that was influenced by the 70's era artists he grew up hearing. Russell's gruff voice and vivid lyrics paint portraits of sketchy hustlers (Star Girl) and ruminate on "part wonder, part tragedy" (We Called It Saturday Night). WR and longtime band-mates, Dan Frank and James Burkman recorded twelve songs in this set that land squarely in a retro bluesy, country-rock influenced sound just as the "Americana" genre was taking hold. This album also represents a final recording session for the Seattle based trio; the title perhaps suggesting a shift in Woody's musical direction and locale shortly after its release. The songs move smoothly from the opening edgy slide guitar riffs and gritty vocals to somber storytelling ballads.
