 The band emerged in 1998 when Dave Gonzalez, vocals and harp, joined Armando "Mondo" Cortez. Shortly after this union, the only member who could be vaguely considered an Angel (in jeans), "Moonshine" Kate Hoddinott, joined the band. The show's co-organizer James Walker insisted that we don't insist too much on her appearance, as she is newlyweds to Nick Moss (another Chicago guitarist, also on the Blues Angels CD). It's these three, Dave, Mondo and Kate, who give the music its variety, its clamoring fire. And each musician has their own subtle and growing differences.

It never ceases to amaze me how these simple and familiar melodies can be played so distinctly by different musicians.

Mondo comes fast and flashy. He weaves in and out of the continuous riff until he takes off in a full whirlwind.

Dave sings his mighty baritone into one microphone and through another (a green bullet) pushes his harmonica out of his blond Victoria amp in throaty horns and plaintive moans. This harp takes me fully back to Canned Heat, the famous boogie band of the late 1960s.

Moonshine Kate takes her Gibson Les Paul through her Fender Vibroverb very seriously. Each note was a statement, with a feeling. Each song was a new inspiration. She said, "I'm not a big fan of guitar hype."

Felix Reyes played bass, a very old Fender precision on an Ampeg Portaflex, most of the night. At one point, he switched with Mondo to throw his own rapid fire mark on a six string.

Drummer Marty Bender worked his ribs with Albert Collins and Buddy Guy. He kept all the flying angels tied to the rhythm and rhythm. He also got a solo spot where he was able to blast all his beats at once, like the crescendo of a fireworks display inside a bag of instant pop.
