Bluesblocket - Svart Blues är ett vitt begrepp (2019)

                                                               Bluesblocket
The Bluesblocket debuted with a self-titled album as early as 1981. Then it was silent on the record front until now, 2019. The sequel to the debut album is thus called Black Blues Is A White Concept and the band offers three covers and a lot of their own material, all with Swedish, well-formulated lyrics.

Mats Zetterberg (Fiendens Musik, Micke Japp and others) formed the blues block from the beginning. He still sings in the band and on the record also guitarist Björn Almqvist (but he dropped off the band after the recording), bassist Mac Robertson and drummer Ingvar Krupa, who are all original members. A number of other musicians also participate in the album, which offers 11 studio recorded tracks and 5 songs recorded live in the studio for Radio Malmöhus. That recording was made in 2010 and shows that at least half of the material on this record has a lot of years on its neck. However, another album with the Blues Block is promised within 1 year so keep your eyes open. The album starts with a lonely, crude slide guitar, and then you start a series of very nice blues and blues-rock songs that are sung with both feeling and fine swing, and together with the Swedish lyrics the songs sit very fast in the consciousness. Mats Zetterberg's vocal voice is completely intact since the 70s records with Fiendens Musik and to hear him today feels like hearing from an old friend again. Blues records can easily become monotonous and tough, but Black Blues Is A White Concept has no dead points, no bad songs and is easily one of the best plates in traditional blues that I have heard in a very, very long time. The record is varied, the music well played and it makes me in a very good mood to turn up the volume and listen to it. Buy it and stay in good mood, you too!

Johnny Coldweather - Blues (2018)

                                                          Johnny Coldweather
Hard Hitting Guitar Blues Rock with Texas Roots from Australian guitarist Johnny Coldweather.

From early days of woodshedding as a teenager in his Sydney home to playing stages in Australia, the US and Europe.
Johnny's passion of the blues culminates in this debut album from the now European based guitarist. The album shows influence from the Mississippi Delta to Chicago to London's Blues Breakers.
The opening track 32-20 Blues shows an electric version of the song through to the track in tribute to Johnny Winter, Goin' Back to Beaumont an original remembering Winter's influence on us all. A live recording from the console in Nashville of Born under a Bad Sign brings in Albert King and Hendrix influences with a fire born in Memphis. The final track Goodbye Old Friend pens a personal loss and shows Johnny on piano and vocals in a Southern Gospel style.
Together with Dan and Dave Guerrie from North Carolina, Dave tracks all drums and bass except for bass on I'm so Blue and Goin Back to Beaumont by Johnny.
So sit back and enjoy this blues album as part of your blues collection, and it will take you back to the days when you listened around the turntable to your favorite blues influences.

Billy Seward - South Shore (2016)

                                                                Billy Seward
It’s been a long time since Florida-based Billy Seward has called the Chicago area home, but the music of his childhood definitely made a lasting impression. He’s called upon some true heavyweights for a helping hand to produce this outstanding collection of modern soul-blues with a distinctly true Windy City feel.

A native of nearby Muncie, Ind., who spent time in Memphis and on both coasts before settling in the sunny climes of Sarasota, Fla., Billy’s always been captivated by the sounds he heard emanating from WVON and other high-powered radio stations a short drive to the northwest. As a young man, he fell in love with West Side bluesmen Fenton Robinson, Magic Sam and Otis Rush as well as South Side soul artists like Curtis Mayfield, Tyrone Davis, Johnny Taylor and Harold Burrage and their Memphis cousins.

Their influence has always formed the backbone of his personal vision. All but Otis are long gone now, but if they’d gotten a chance to listen to South Shore, Seward’s first release since Better Place in 2011, they’d be beaming approval. Its title is a tip of the fedora to the commuter railroad that runs between his hometown and the Loop.

Billy called out the big guns to make it happen. The album was recorded at the Delmark Records studio under the direction of engineer Steve Wagner and produced by Dave Specter, the top-flight guitarist and bar owner. And it features a guest appearance of one of Seward’s other childhood heroes, Jimmy Johnson, still the powerhouse standard bearer of the Chicago sound at 88 years old.

The rhythm section includes a pair of all-stars drummer Marty Binder, who’s backed Albert Collins, Deborah Coleman and a host of others, and bassist Harlan Lee Terson, who’s recorded with a who’s who of Windy City talent including Rush, Johnny Littlejohn, Lonnie Brooks, Eddie Shaw and many others. They’re augmented by keyboard player John Kattke and harmonica player Tom Moore. Willie Henderson, the baritone sax player who’s been a Memphis and Chicago soul institution since the ‘60s, fronts a horn section that includes Doug Corcoran on trumpet and Steve Eisen on tenor sax.

But Seward is the real star here. He possesses a rich, warm, melismatic tenor that might remind some listeners of Tad Robinson, the Indianapolis-based soul-blues giant. And his guitar playing remains rooted and true to the West Side sound. A guitar run and horn flourish introduce the opener, “The Hawk.” It’s a sweet, soulful plea for a woman to help him overcome the wickedly chilling wind that blows between the canyon of skyscrapers during a brutal Midwest winter.

Leadfoot Rivet - Bluesmaniac (1998)

                                                             Leadfoot Rivet
It took a longtime for Leadfoot to become the artist he is today. Others like Rimbaud or Bob Dylan seem to bloom and get their full maturity all of a sudden and either shortly after stop to create or perpetuate the same form for ever.

Certain artists need much more time to reach their full potential feeding themselves with multiple experiences along the way, overcoming mental blocks and traumas to progress and enrich their art form.
Leadfoot Rivet is such !.

As a singer his powerful and moving voice can paint a full scope of emotions, gaining depth and warmth over the years : a very unique instrument ! As a songwriter he now has the power and style he developed from his mentors and masters Randy Newman, Johnny Cash, John Prine, Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters, Rodney Crowell or Guy Clark amongst a long line of songsters and troubadours.
As a musician, he has made the synthesis of his wide influences blues, folk, soul & country musics, even fado, sòn, milonga and oriental and central asian musics ! Even his rather basic playing on harp and guitar define & characterize his own style. And he has the knowledge to get the best out of his sidemen.

That’s what you can hear in his latest offering « Welcome to my mongrel music world ! »

Over the years he has collaborated as a songwriter with Larry Garner, Tom Principato, Neal Black, Fred Chapellier, the Mercy Band and french rock icon Bashung.

His records are graced by appearances by Tommy Castro, Roy Rogers, Amos Garrett, Popa Chubby, Tom Principato, John Mooney, Larry Garner, Joanna Connor and he has shared the stage with Sam Myers, Anson Funderburgh, Smokin’Joe Kubek, Duke Robillard, Calvin Russell, Neal Black, Billy Price, Larry Garner, Amos Garrett and many others.

The great Mighty Sam Mc CLAIN says of him : « Voice, lyrics anf feeling, I’m very impressed ! »
And Mighty Mo Rodgers « You really FEEL the blues ! ». Even the legendary Blind Sam Myers was calling him to the stage to end his own shows !!
From his birth amongst american culture loving froggies and raised by classical singers parents, he has found his way thru the sixties with seminal french bands like the Turnips then the Murators for his first recordings with Fontana and Vogue, the musical HAIR in Belgium, lots of travels around the world in the seventies plus a recording contract with RCA and the production of several albums notably the soul group BAD CHILD.

Then in the 80’s he started the famed rock/blues/country band ROCKIN’CHAIR while he was also a DJ on pionneer free radio RFM, then launching with Philippe Langlois the Dixiefrog & Voodoo labels and touring in the 90’s artists such as Bo Diddley, Wilson Pickett, Donovan, Zachary Richard, Mari Boine, Gatemouth Brown, the Flyin’Burrito brothers, Peter Green, Kevin Ayers, Kevin Coyne, Jimmy Rogers, Junior Wells, Johnny Copeland, Tommy Castro and a bunch of other stars and legends of american music.

All this alongside his own musical career becoming even more active since 1998 with new albums of his own and side projects the Blues Conspiracy (with Neal Black & Nico Wayne Toussaint) and the Drinkhouse Preachers (with Neal Black and Pat Boudot-Lamot) till this milestone new album you’re holding now and …who knows what the next step will be ?
