In 2015, Steve Morgan and the Kingfish won the Boston Blues Challenge. In 2016 we played in the quarterfinals of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, sharing the stage with the best blues bands in the world. Since then we've been hard at it, playing classic tunes, re-inventing them and always pushing the blues envelope with our original tunes.

This is the first Steve Morgan and the Kingfish CD to feature only the Kingfish and with other members besides Steve contributing tunes. This is a keeper!

 "A lot can happen in five years" says blues rocker Eric Jerardi referring to ?the time between the release of his last studio record, Virtual Virtue and now. "A lot has happened and a lot hasn't happened I suppose, but what just happened is that I've recorded the best record of my life, and if it had taken me 20 years to get to this point, it would have been worth it. Just think about what has transpired in the last five years - you have I pods and I tunes and pod casts and pro tools and CD burners and bear share and limewire and all this computer stuff - the music business has changed and so have I. That's why I decided to go backwards in order to go forward and it took me five years to figure that out” says Jerardi. ??Jerardi and his band, Jon Arnold on bass, and Joe Prescott on drums teamed up again with veteran studio engineer Willie Pevear in Memphis whose extensive resume includes work with the Neville Brothers, Lyle Lovett, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash to name a few. Together, Jerardi and Pevear had a vision to record a live performance in the studio - a rather unconventional approach with today's advanced recording techniques. With the help of Memphis dignitary Al Gamble on the keys, what emerged is what Jerardi calls his greatest achievement in recording. After the recording, it was rumored that Jerardi, in a haze of smoke and wine quipped: "It's as greasy as a chicken wing, funky as a pitchfork and sounds like damnation." The expected release date of Restless will be the spring of 2007 - constant touring to follow.?
Eric Jerardi started his musical career at Ohio University where his very first gig resulted in winning a battle of the bands contest in 1989. Ironically one of the very last gigs at OU was another contest, which ultimately secured a spot on MTV as the Midwest's Best Unsigned College Band in 1991. Now almost 18 years later, Jerardi still continues to perform countless live shows everywhere. He's shared the stage with Little Feat and Jim Belushi at The House Of Blues Chicago, and LA, jammed with Eric Johnson on Cape Cod and with Keith Urban, Wynonna, and Kenny Chesney in Nashville, played South by South West in Austin, TX, headlined B.B. Kings in Memphis, L.A., Nashville and Manhattan, as well as countless blues festivals and major concerts. The list of support shows is too long but includes several tours with Robin Trower from coast to coast. Eric has been featured on the House of Blues radio show with Dan Aykroyd, signed an artist endorsement deal with Fender Musical instruments, amps, and strings - twice featured in their yearly catalog, Fender Frontline, and was featured at the Nashville NAMM show on a double bill with Johnny Lang for Fender - the list goes on and on and on. "To say I've paid my dues is a gross understatement. However, all those years of honing my craft have brought me to this comfortable place in my life and my music that I wouldn't change for anything" states Jerardi. One major difference is the fact that Eric has what he calls "lightened up a bit." "I'm not as serious as I used to be. I'm writing more fun or witty songs as well as my usual heartbreakers, and I like it. "My playing, singing and writing have never been better, and the new CD will showcase that.

Jeff Healey - Evil Blues (1993)

 Canadian music icon, Jeff Healey, was born in Toronto on March 25, 1966. Blind from early childhood due to retinoblastoma (a rare form of eye cancer), Jeff Healey’s guitar playing virtuosity and soulful voice saw him rise to prominence in the entertainment world in the late 1980s and ‘90s selling millions of albums worldwide.

Getting his first guitar at the age of three, he developed a unique style of playing. Placing the guitar flat on his lap, and playing it like a lap steel with his hands over the fret board, gave him the flexibility of fretting with all five fingers and the power of pulling notes with the strength of his whole hand.

For over two decades, Jeff enjoyed a successful music career that spanned rock, blues and traditional jazz. Grammy nominee and Juno award winner, he was a radio personality, a jazz historian and world famous record collector (owning a collection of 1920’s and ‘30’s jazz 78s that would ultimately top out at over 30,000 records).

With the Jeff Healey Band, he recorded five studio albums and contributed to the soundtrack of the cult classic film, Patrick Swayze’s Road House; a film in which Jeff and the band were featured prominently. Over the years, Jeff’s reputation as a player and a person led him to perform and record with such incredible luminaries as Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King, John Mayall, Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, Lenny Kravitz, George Harrison, Mark Knopfler, Ian Gillan and many, many more.

In addition to countless recording sessions as a guitarist, trumpet player, singer and producer, Jeff also recorded three albums of the traditional American jazz that he loved so much. Just prior to his untimely passing, Jeff put the finishing touches on the award winning ‘Mess Of Blues’, his first rock/blues album in nine years.

Throughout Jeff’s successful career, he was an advocate for both the blind and literacy. He showed his support by lending his name and volunteering his time to various CNIB fundraisers and Toronto’s Word On The Street festival.

A childhood cancer survivor, Jeff took every opportunity to help support Sick Kids Hospital, focusing on Daisy’s Eye Cancer Fund (a Childhood Retinoblastoma Research foundation), which has made great strides and has even helped the amazing progress of his own son’s Retinoblastoma treatment. One of the many ways he helped support the Fund was through his annual ‘It’s a Very Healey Christmas‘ charity show at his club, Healey’s (opened in 2001, it was one of two nightclubs that would bear Jeff’s name in his home town of Toronto).

Jeff was a proud Canadian through and through. While he set a high standard and example as an unbelievable musician, he was also an inspiration to disabled people around the world. Awarded an honorary doctorate from McMaster University and inducted into the Terry Fox Hall of Fame, Jeff represented determination, equal opportunity and a passion to stay true to your dreams, no matter what the obstacle.

Jeff Healey passed away on March 2nd, 2008 after a three-year battle with sarcoma cancer. He was 41-years-old.

Gail Mojo Muldrow - Cleen Spirit (2006)

 Gail Muldrow offers an irresistible mixture of blues, funk, soul, r&b, rock, grunge, heavy metal ... you name it. For Gail there are no boundaries and she knows how to blend all those musical genres into one original Gail Muldrow style. Subsequently she belongs to those great Bay Area musicians who are difficult to place into one category. She is definitely a musician's musician and for those who heard her play and sing, another example for the fact that good music isn't necessarily always to be found on radio or music television. Just to change that, Gail's music deserves much more attention.

Very early in life Gail, who is a native San Franciscan, picked up the guitar and played on Sly Stone's album "High On You" in 1975 - then known as Cousin Gale. Since that time Gail Muldrow has been an important fixture in the SF music scene. She has also become a member of the Family Stone - not in the sense that she played on any of the other Sly and the Family Stone albums during Sly's time - but she is a driving force in bringing back together what remains of the Family Stone in various combinations. She has been a member of Family Without Stone around 1989 and in 2004 she joined The Family Stone Experience aka Life: The First Family of Funk - featuring former Family Stone members Gregg Errico and Jerry Martini. The latter says that "Gail Muldrow is one of the finest singers and entertainers anywhere in the world". With that connection it is pretty obvious that Gail's guitar playing involves a lot of funk. Although she has not been a member of Sly and the Family Stone in the 70s, she has been a member of Graham Central Station then for two years and is featured on the 1977 album "Now Do U Wanta Dance". In addition Gail played with famous funk musicians like Prince and Chaka Kahn (a complete list of Gail's collaborations can be found on her MySpace page).
 
On the other hand Gail's repertoire includes a lot of blues and she doesn't only play the guitar - she is also a terrific singer. Since 1992 she has been a member of the Johnny Otis Show and can be heard singing and playing guitar on Johnny Otis' album "R&B Dance Party" (1999) on five songs. It was Johnny Otis who gave her the nickname 'Little Bit' because of her height. Gail likes to use the nickname 'Mojo' instead. With that name and band - Gail 'Mojo' Muldrow - she backed up famous singers like Sugar Pie DeSanto - whom Otis called 'Little Miss Sugar Pie' in the 50s. By the way, Johnny Otis once discovered Esther Phillips - then known as 'Little Esther' - one of the greatest singers ever. Having said that, one has to admit that Gail belongs to this category (and I am not talking about little women!!!) as well and there is probably more blues and soul in her voice than the average blues singer has to offer.
There is still more though because Gail also knows how to rock the house. With Quicksilver Gold - featuring yet another bunch of famous Bay Area musicians - she demonstated that she can play psychedelic rock as well. Her experience in this field comes from her playing with the likes of Merl Saunders (with whom she co-wrote the song "Melons In Season" from Saunders' 1979 album "Do I Move You"), Melvin Seals and the Jerry Garcia Band. Well, and when she is not recording with new artists like Doug Jayne or playing with one of her many bands, like Spudnig or Big Nurse, she is working solo and plays places like Peri's under a variety of names like Sista Cleen.

In 2003 Gail finally released her debut album "Cleen Spirit". The album is truly an expression of Gail's spirit and thus the 12 tracks represent Gail's many musical talents. The album starts with the heavy metal laden "Bitch Mommy Bitch" which hits you like a truck. Next is "Bootz" and only when you hear the line "... gonna walk all over you ..." you know that Gail has just done that and you begin to catch the rhythm and spirit of the first two tracks. Well and then it gets kind of dreamy with "Your Love Wont Go" and you know that one has to love Gail's music as she is a great singer and songwriter and dares to be different. This album isn't playing safe and if one is used to one-style-only albums maybe hard to digest ("It's Hard"/"Hate Me"). On the other hand, life is an ever changing configuration of feelings and "Cleen Spirit" is full of life. Then there is the almost instrumental and funky "Whered You Get Yo Funk" which immediately wants to make you move yo body. "Ribbons and Bows" - a declaration of independence - has the smoothest rhythm ever and is possibly the best track on the album ... do I have to add more details? After the release of her first album Gail continued touring and in 2006 she toured Italy under the wing of her Italian manager Tano Ro's Feelin' Good Productions which also includes the record label Feelin' Good Records. This label released four outstanding Gail Muldrow CDs within 2007 alone - all of them taking us to the river of Gail's never ending flow of fascinating music. These releases are a dream come true as they present the many sides of Gail Muldrow and fill a gap that could hardly be filled by Gail's debut album in 2003 alone. Plus, not to release these CDs would have been a major crime.
The first CD released has been "It's My Life" which was recorded October 26th, 2006 in Piacenza, Italy. The setting is quite intimate and catches Gail singing and supporting herself with only her Fender Strat. The CD is well recorded and features Gail's own material like "It's Hard" and "Stranger Things", but also well know standards like "Take Me To The River" and "Not Fade Away" - 17 great tracks altogether. Gail has such a great talent to either build up tension between her singing and her guitar playing or make everything sound so sweet, i.e. it is amazing how Gail's guitar playing blends so perfectly with her vocals. You would really wish that this recording never ends but then it ends so quickly and when checking your watch you suddenly realize that one hour has already passed. Luckily things like replay buttons exist to add another one.

The second release "Raw Live And Cool" which was actually recorded a few days earlier on October 21st, 2006 at The Sonix Music Hall in Imola might include six tracks which can also be found on "It’s My Life" but this time the treatment is totally different. Gail is supported by a backing band entitled "The Funkin' Blues Baby One", i.e. Luca Tonani on bass, Luca Zamponi on guitar and Lele Zamperini on drums. With this Italian groove machine Gail demonstrates that she also knows how to 'set the roof on fire'. Due to Gail's funk roots she sometimes even slides into harder edge territories but most of the time Gail's music is a most likable funkier version of the blues.
Instead of the intimate setting the previous CD delivered this recording really rocks the house and it's great fun to compare how Gail handles tracks like "Not Fade Away" in different settings. So even though these two CDs contain some of the same songs - as they were recorded on the same tour - the treatment is different each time. This is also true for the third live recording which was recorded a few months later in Switzerland on June 30th, 2007.

"Live At Blues'n'Jazz Festival Rapperswil - Jona" is a wonderful live blues rock concert with touches of funk. This live album is another demonstration of Gail's outstanding artistry and it includes some tracks Gail would record on her second studio album only one month later. Gail is supported by a very good and almost new backing band - only the drummer has played with Gail on the previous CD. Especially "Shakey Ground" and killer versions of "Not Fade Away" and "Dope Smokin' Blues" display how tight the band plays together. Gail always leaves enough room for the individual band members to shine through though, i.e. Guerretti's rolling keyboards, Orsini's funky bass lines and Zamperini's driving beats. Although recorded at an open air jazz festival, the sound almost equals the one created on "Raw Live And Cool" - very satisfactory indeed as the audience response underlines.

One month later (July 10, 2007) Gail recorded her second studio album "Peace Of Mind". She is supported by members of the famous Ford Blues Band, i.e. Patrick Ford, Dewayne Pate and Andy Just, plus Italian guitarist Tiziano Gailli. Due to this blues heavyweights this album can really be labeled to be 100% blues. Even Gail's singing, guitar playing and songwriting sound like she has never done anything else but playing the blues. Subsequently it's much fun to listen to this album as the 10 tracks keep you grooving as long as they last - quite a change of concept if you compare this album to Gail's first studio release "Cleen Spirit" where abrupt changes of musical styles ruled. Right from the first track "You're So Fine" Andy Just displays his outstanding harmonica skills and the rest of the band do not show any flaws either. Subseqently the album sounds like one piece and really gives you peace of mind. One of the album's highlights is "Dope Smoking Blues", i.e. Gail Muldrow at her best ... actually no Jägermeister or poppin' of pills needed ;)

Gail's latest European blues moves have been quite succesful and it looks like she has finally found a receptive audience in the European blues crowd and also her European CD and concert reviews sound very promising. Danger could be, that there will be more blues inside her music in the future than funk but on the other hand, funk artists like Rad., Maceo Parker, Tower of Power or funkrock bands like Mother's Finest do very well in Europe - especially Germany - thus there is still more funky ground for Gail to cover.

Plus, Gail is still involved in the funky thing as her Sly Stone legacy band GM and the Funk Machine demonstrates. This line-up has no release yet but some tracks are available from the accompanying website. Each track delivers a different vibe, i.e. "Mop Head" is kinda spacy, "Gotta Love Me" has a soulful chorus and "Fired" is quite funky with touches of country - quite promising indeed. You can always find new stuff on Gail's MySpace website as well and it looks like we are heading for more cool funky music soon. In the meantime make sure you order Gail's 2007 releases, catch one of her concerts in case she comes to a place near you, i.e. support real music and feel good.

With the success of their first two albums, The Notorious B.A.G. - 2003 and Rise Above - 2010 on Darkhorse Records, and a relentless show schedule Brother Bagman came a long way to prove that they can play music that has soul and intention for the masses. John Dee Holeman - Bull City After Dark (1991)

 Fans of Piedmont blues as performed by the likes of the late John Jackson and John "Bowling Green" Cephas will like the guitar and vocal stylings of John Dee Holeman, who has several recordings that are readily available. Holeman has been based in Durham, North Carolina since 1954. Over the years, tobacco city Durham has been home to a prominent list of bluesmen, including people like Rev. Gary Davis, Arthur Lyons, and Blind Boy Fuller. Holeman has updated the older Durham acoustic Piedmont blues traditions to include elements of urban blues, Texas blues, classic R&B, and jazz. Holeman was born in Orange County in 1929 and began singing and picking guitar as a 14-year-old. He cites Blind Boy Fuller as the musician who taught him how to play -- he learned guitar from listening to Fuller's recordings and by performing with musicians who had learned first-hand from Fuller. Later, as a teen, he began entertaining at birthday parties, wood choppings, house rent parties, and corn shuckings. Once in Durham, he began performing with pianist Fris Holloway (born in 1918), and both men were also excellent buckdancers.

Holeman received a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1988 and a North Carolina Heritage Award in 1994, and he still performs frequently in and around North Carolina on weekends. He toured nationally and internationally in the 1980s, giving concerts at Carnegie Hall in New York and Wolf Trap in Washington, D.C. He has performed abroad for the United States' Information Agency's Arts America program. In 1988, Holeman recorded the album Bull Durham Blues with Grammy Award-winning musician Taj Mahal, who played guitar, bass, piano, and hambone on the album. Holeman's other releases include John Dee Holeman & the Waifs Band and You Got to Lose, You Can't Win All the Time. He also has an album on the Washington, D.C.-based Mapleshade Records label, John Dee Holeman and Sunnyland Slim: Blues Legends Live. His Bull Durham Blues was reissued on Music Maker Relief Foundation Records, based in North Carolina, in 1999.

 Randy McAllister's 'Temporary Fixes' saw an extremely limited released in 2004, yet it may be one of his finest collections of original compositions. With melodies that you want to hum and lyrics that straighten the twists in life, Randy McAllister did it again. Yet another easy to listen album that should have hit the charts when it was first released. 'The Chain' sets the pace with an unabashed call to action. An indictment of apathy set to a tune that echos as strongly as the lyrics. Next 'Nobody Can Help You' takes a choppy, bluesy slap at depression. 'Never Had a Lot of Faith' is an anthem to the quiet power of faith in relationships. Strong McAllister vocals and harp punctuated by Todd Blalock guitar solos to make 'That Chicken Your're Fixin' one of the tracks on this album you'll be re-playing. 'Suzi Goldigger & Sweet Betty' and 'Game of Life' tackle the street and life from a thoroughly McAllister viewpoint. Dealing with love lost to a zydaco beat is the topic for 'Stronger Vice/Better Hobby'. With a track change Randy is rocking 'Take Me Out of New Orleans' one of the strongest tracks on the album, as if to shout he won't play cliche. 'Man Who Went For Cigarettes' is another McAllister musical portrait with haunting Mike Morgan guitar solos pierced by Randy's unmistakable harp. His music has been hailed as being some of the most original and innovative being made today. While comparison's are not easy, it has been said that his music is a cross between Doug Sahm, John Hiatt and Delbert McClinton, with a blues man's background and sensibilities thrown into the mix. Raised in the town of Novice, Texas, McAllister is a fifth-generation Texan, whose father was both a fireman and musician. His father was a drummer of a band called The Flames. At a very young age, he began to take up drumming, but the drums were just the beginning. McAllister found the harmonica in the early 1980's while stationed in Massachusetts as a member of the U.S. Air Force. 'Taking cues from Blues legend 'Earring George' Mayweather, a Boston resident and harmonica master. McAllister moved back to Texas in 1992, a strong and skillful harp player who was developing his vocal and songwriting skills.
