The Radiators - Wild & Free (2008)

                                                                The Radiators
The Radiators were formed in 1977 in keyboard player/vocalist, Ed Volker's New Orleans garage. Still comprised of all of the original members, The Radz—Volker, Dave Malone (guitar/lead vocals), Camile Baudoin (guitar/backing vocals), Reggie Scanlon (bass) and Frank Bua Jr. (drums)—serve up a tasty jambalaya of musical styles that includes Blues, R&B, Funk, Cajun, a touch of Jazz and, of course, rootsy Rock 'n' Roll. This is best evidenced by the fact that fans can find the band's music filed under each of those categories, in a separate New Orleans section in music stores and on-line. The end result and the contents of each CD/LP is great, feel-good, groove-filled, toe-tapping American music.

Wild & Free, released on their own Radz Records label, is a comprehensive collection of old favorites, live performances and unreleased tracks. The two-disc, 28 song collection is not your typical career-spanning "Best Of" or "Rarities" CD. Rather, it is a treasure trove of some of the most beloved of what seems like a 1000 song repertoire representing all that is special about The Radiators—distinctive songs full of heart and soul with building grooves featuring tempo changes, and ambitious unexpected transitions backing up literate and erudite lyrics.

Compiled by and featuring liner notes written by Ed Volker, Wild & Free contains the first officially released versions of the title track, "Cupid's Got A Mighty Arrow" (with it's distinctive bass), "Tear My Eyes Out" (recorded in The Fountain Bay Rehearsal Room) "The Forever Man" and "When Her Snake Eyes Roll" as well as brand-new tracks—the funky rocker "Where Was You At?" and the dreamy, laid-back shuffle of "The Girl With The Golden Eyes" which were recorded especially for this release.

Also featured are live versions of "classic" songs originally released on their three Epic Records studio albums Law of the Fish (1987), Zig-Zaggin' Through Ghostland (1989) and Total Evaporation (1990). These tracks (recorded as early as 1978 at Luigi's Pizza on Elysian Fields Avenue in New Orleans) are funkier and more soulful. Longer arrangements of "Doctor Doctor," "Red Dress," "Hard Time Train," "I Want To Go Where The Green Arrow Goes" (on which Malone vocals are bluesy, soulful and perfect), "Like Dreamers Do," "Oh Beautiful Loser" and "Suck The Head, Squeeze The Tip" (which is actually about eating crawfish)—are rocking, alive, raw and as vital as if they were played/recorded last night in a club or concert hall, which is where The Radiators excel and are truly in their element.

The songs on this collection have been assembled in anything but chronological order, mixing and matching eras and decades, allowing the musical groove to flow from the speakers. Though the recording quality varies a bit due to aging, flooding and the limitations of the source recordings, the performances are warm, easy on the ears and exactly the types of songs that should be found on a career-spanning compilation.

The Kevin Maines Band - American Hustle (2012)

                                                          The Kevin Maines Band
Raised in North Florida, where gospel and soul music lay as thick as the hot, humid air, Kevin Maines brings a youthful vibrancy to the classic southern R&B/Soul legacy. Kevin’s debut album, American Hustle, received praise for its creative writing, playing, and production, as well as the strong musical maturity rarely seen in debuts. From deep and dirty Duane Allman-esque slide guitar rockers to sweet gospel-inspired falsetto singing, Kevin Maines doesn’t just play in the southern soul traditions, he consumes and then gives them back bursting with his own unique twist. From gritty to ethereal, this music speaks for itself.

Kevin Maines and The Volts will release their second album in May 2017. Fans of Funkadelic, Son House, Ray Charles, and John Mayall should take notice. Inspired by the never-ending creativity of Frank Zappa, this album moves past typical blues song formats and takes creative chances. Some musicians dig deep into tradition, while others are endlessly creative risk-takers; every now and then someone comes along that does both.  Kevin Maines is one of those unique individuals.

American Hustle is the first full length release by The Kevin Maines Band. It is an album comprised of Heavy Soul and Blues Rock music. It's purpose is to enrich and enthrall the listener. It is meant to be played loud.

Red Hot 'n' Blue - Ain't Gonna Stop (2003)

                                                                Red Hot 'n' Blue
They recorded Aint Gonna Stop for Time Bomb a Japan label, a land where the band was highly popular. It finds Red Hot’n’Blue returning to a wider variety of styles including rockabilly (Ain’t Gonna Stop, Funny Kinda Feeling, Uptown Cat), rock’n’roll love song (You’re the One), rockin’ blues (a recut of Sure Like the Look in your Eyes that became a dancefloor filler), Chicago blues (Willie Dixon’s My Babe and the Elmore James inspired Caroline) and country-ish numbers like Going Away.
Compared to their previous releases the production is cleaner but also a bit thiner at places, but it remains a very good album with strong songwriting.
Just after the recording, Ashley Kingman left the band to move to the USA and join Big Sandy and the Fly Rite Boys, hence the title, Ain’t Gonna Stop, given by the three remaining members.

Bluesaholics - 2 (1997)

                                                                     Bluesaholics
Blues bands have had a tradition in the Zofingen region for decades. In 1991 there was the big merger: "Blues Company" and "Hagelwätter Blues Band" became the Bluesaholics. A lot of time has passed since then, but even today, more than 400 concerts and 30 years later, the blue flame of the blues is still burning brightly.

It's rare that a band's formation has barely changed over so many years. At Bluesaholics, almost everything is still the same: With René "Zobi" Zobrist (vocals), Benno Riss (guitar, blues harp), Willi "Lube" Basler (bass) and Markus "Meck" Keller (drums) are four of the six founding fathers still on stage. In between there were individual upgrades, such as the addition of multi-instrumentalist and singer Levi Bo or the horn formation "Hornaholics". However, it is even more rare that a lead singer shares his position with other voices. In addition to Levi Bo, strong female voices were and are also being used, such as the current singer Monika Schär.

In 2016 the band dared to take a bold step: Live as well as on the album "Amazing Shades", the Bluesaholics present themselves acoustically: light-footed, intimate and fragile, without frills. However, they have only supposedly become quieter, because every now and then they insist on rocking the stage electrically in an enlarged formation. Whether acoustic or electric: Bluesaholics are a guarantee for a great live experience.
