Geoffrey Chaurand
France definitely has incredible talent! Geoffrey Chaurand has long forged a solid reputation as a sideman (Sophie Tapie, Keziah Jones, Thomas Boissy), demonstrator (for Fender), session guitarist and pedagogue, and his first instrumental solo album Chill Out arrives at just the right moment to reveal to us his real artistic scope, well beyond his pure know-how as an instrumentalist. Geoffrey is inhabited by blues, jazz, country and rock'n'roll. This music vibrates in him and tends to mix very naturally within his universe, always with this resolutely funky way of playing, a legacy of his many road trips across the USA. He fed there directly at the source, with precious stopovers in Nashville, during which he was able to sharpen his Telecasters by rubbing shoulders with the local gratin (Brent Mason, J.D. Simo, Guthrie Trapp, Steve Trovato). A stint at the GIT in Los Angeles allowed him to crystallize all his experiences. Taking advantage of a season at half mast (because of the Covid), Geoffrey transformed the garage of his Breton home into a home studio and invited his fellow drummer Stéphane Boutinaud, specialist in New Orleans shuffle and swing, to box eight of his tracks in the most direct and uncluttered way possible: a Telecaster plugged into an overheated Twin Reverb which twists cheerfully, a Fender bass (handled by Geoffrey himself), a rudimentary drum kit, some good microphones and above all an immoderate dose of energy and fun. No need to cross the Atlantic to appreciate the quintessence of "American sound": it is encapsulated in this Chill Out, a concentrate of groove, very catchy melodies and good vibes, traditional in its substance, but modern in its interpretation. . Of course, Chill Out will be a blessing for all lovers of good scratches and vocabulary, friend Geoffrey has something to keep them in suspense, since from Steve Cropper to Leo Nocentelli, via Jerry Donahue, Les Paul, Danny Gatton or even Brad Paisley, he passed them all through his guitar prism. An excellent introduction, so can't wait for the sequel! Ludovic Egraz
