Robert Wullenjohn - Blue On Green (2001)

                                                               Robert Wullenjohn
'From his early days as a bass guitarist with notable San Francisco musician John Cipollina (Quicksilver Messenger Service) to his performing with, since the founding of, Bay Area Celtic-rock mainstay Tempest, Wullenjohn has continued to push the limits with blended music styles and instrumentation. Following a successful North American tour, Wullenjohn decided it was the time to forge a new musical path. Creating in his studio (The Monkey Palace) he began experimenting and assembling songs for what would become his first solo effort. The product was Blue on Green, a mixture of blues-rock, Celtic traditional, bluegrass and even a bit of Hawaiian slack-key. The album features classic fiddle tunes, as well as blues numbers reminiscent of tasty English guitarists, such as Fleetwood Mac founder Peter Green. But Wullenjohn doesn't restrict himself to guitar, filling in on bass, harmonica and banjo. One of the album's highlights is the tune 'Grass Attack,' where the musician picks the main theme on banjo, then introduces a slide guitar call-and-response solo. You can count on the band's show for a variety of styles and instruments fitting tightly together like a jigsaw puzzle.' --Shand Walton, SF Gate, Published February 2000. About The Music: 'Blue on Green' features 14 blues and Celtic rock inspired songs - most of which are penned by Rob Wullenjohn. Rob plays electric, acoustic, and slide guitar, harmonica, electric and acoustic bass, banjo and harmonica. Lief Sorbye (Tempest) is the featured vocalist on 'The Long Blue, a song reminiscent of the Tempest Celtic rock style. Other musicians from Tempest include Adolfo Lazo (drums), Michael Mullen (fiddle), Jon Berger (fiddle), Ian Butler (keyboards), and John Land (flute). Nancy Hall (The Curios) adds her voice to the song The Water is Wide, a traditional folk tune. Songs, such as 3-Way Jam, and I'm Down are distinctly blues-rock, with searing guitar leads and saxaphone. The song Full Load is a dense acid rock instrumental featuring an ethereal harmonica sound by Peter Lacques. The CD ends with a pretty tune called 'Old Stone' - sung by Simone Nelson (Jane Piranha) with flute played by John Land (Coyote Pudding/Tempest). Other guest musicians include: Greg Elmore (Drums), JD Smith (drums), Marina Garza (trumpet), Tracy McMullen (sax), Hal Biggler (Ac.bass), Adam Levine (guitar), Otto Huber (drums), and Raquel Simmons (vocals/bongos).
