Mia Dyson - Parking Lots (2005)

                                                                Mia Dyson
Her voice is not rough, but it's a guttural grab that is rugged and slow-combusting, like a good blues voice should be.

It sure doesn't sound like the voice of 24-year-old Victorian country girl playing her father's handmade guitars.

Imagine Lucinda Williams on a five-day bender, crossed with Renee Geyer in a bad mood, and you have one end of it.

If Parking Lots has a problem, it is that Dyson goes to that well a little too often or stays a little too long. It's not because she can't do otherwise. When she eases back and lets a smoother tone come through, it can be revelatory.

Maybe she feels she has to remind us she isn't some flighty visitor to a genre where pretence can be rapidly exposed.

She doesn't need to worry, though. Dyson was mightily impressive with her 2003 debut, Cold Water. Now she reinforces how exciting a talent she is as a singer, guitarist and songwriter.

The writing part is the weakest, but that's only by degrees because a song such as Choose has a captivating melodic lyricism.

It's also hard to ignore the gleeful zest of Roll Me Out or the reflective soulfulness of No Other.

As for her guitar playing, Dyson can burn with a kind of lashing brutality (Down), or just caress you with a roughened but still tender hand in Fire Creek, which closes the album in a waft of eucalyptus. She's good and getting better.

Parking Lots isn't a life's defining work, but it consolidates a reputation built on talent rather than topicality.
