Beano Mojohand - Beano Mojohand (2020)

                                                                    Beano Mojohand
Ernie Ocampo, AKA “Beano,” raised in Lynwood California, fell in love with music at the tender age of 6, influenced by rock and blues. At the age of 13, Ernie was visiting Las Vegas, NV, and decided to pick up the guitar and strum along to pop songs that were being played and hasn’t put his guitar down since. Growing up in Lynwood as a foster child, had its good and bad moments, but these negative moments have driven him to focus on what drives his heart and soul to climb the mountain of music success. Beano’s dedication, desire, discipline, drive, determination, attitude and ability paved his path to play and write blues music. At such a young age, Beano has been influenced by the greats in Blues: Stevie Ray Vaughn, Johnny Winter, Freddy King, B.B. King, Carlos Santana, Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac, Albert King & the Blues Breakers, and most of all John Mayall with Eric Clapton’s album known as “The Beano Album” which in fact sealed the deal to guide Ernie’s musical future: the Blues! Ernie has formed LA’s hottest new blues/rock band, Beano Mojohand. Beano was discovered by mentor Juanito Ibarra on a bench while competing at a guitar competition in 2018. Since then, Beano has started the band within 2018, under the tutelage of Juanito Ibarra through the World Class Youth Foundation. Beano Mojohand has performed with great renowned musical artist such as, Junior Watson, the talented Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Kirk Fletcher, Johnny Main and JR Lozano of the band “the 44’s,” Los Faboloco’s, Kid Ramos, David Hidalgo of the Legendary “Los Lobos” and the famous group Malo of the world renowned hit song ‘Suavecito.’ While performing at phenomenal blues venues in the Los Angeles California area such as, the ABC in Pasadena, the PCH Golden Sails Club, Finalist in Six String Showdown, LA Stars & Stripes Music Festival, Original Mike’s, Malainey’s. Beano has also migrated his performance in the Arizona venues and playing with bands such as Joe & The Hostiles, Smokestack Lightning and performing at the World famous Char’s Has the Blues. Beano Mojohand has gained great support from such great musical artist such as Kim Wilson, Joe Bonamassa, Rod Piazza, Hall of Fame Arizona’s King of Blues “Big Pete” Pearson, and recently rock n roll Hall of Famer, Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers who has shown his support to the growth of Beano’s future, and we can’t forget all the fans worldwide. In August of 2019 Beano Mojohand has teamed with artist/music engineer Chuck Alvarez in his private studio in San Pedro, CA, where many original songs and covers were recorded and mastered.

The independent self-titled debut album, Beano Mojohand, was released in early 2020 and was written and co-produced by Beano himself alongside producer Juanito Ibarra under their independent labels, Chorro Recordz and Mama Coco Music Publishing LLC. Team Beano continues to support the Blues societies nationwide. Beano Mojohand has received airplay on radio stations such as The Junkyard Blues Station hosted by Robert Eliff and the well-known Chicago Blues Station 88.5 WNIJ hosted by the talented Chicago DJ, Dave Sawtelles. The selftitled debut album Beano Mojohand has been getting airplay throughout the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, and other parts of Europe due to the kick-off interview with Gerry Casey’s “Turn-it Up” Radio show (33) in Ireland. Anyone that recognizes Beano Mojohand are ecstatic for Beano’s talent and story and alongside Juanito’s collaborative talents by being featured in recognized magazines such as “Making the Scene” and “HIT Parader.” Now world-renowned Joe Bonamassa and his nonprofit organization, Keeping the Blues Alive, have granted Beano through Joe’s program to help keep Beano’s expression lively.

Beano’s debut album was considered for the Best Emerging album of the year for the 2021 Blues Foundation Awards in Memphis, Tennessee. The selfwritten single “Crazy Woman” was up for Song of the Year, and “Black Magic Woman” for Contemporary Blues Song of the Year and lastly, “As the Years Go Passing By” for Blues Song of the Year. The band now marks their 50th anniversary with the release of Struck Down, their first studio album in eight years. This new record, featuring nine original compositions co-written by Wilson and Steve Strongman, alongside a standout cover of Memphis Minnie’s "Nothing In Rambling," was produced by Wilson, Strongman, and Glen Parrish.

The new album showcases a lineup of stellar guest artists, including Billy F Gibbons of ZZ Top on the single "Payback Time" and a star-studded ensemble featuring Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Keb’ Mo’, and Mick Fleetwood on the mesmerizing "Nothing In Rambling." From the opening blues-infused track "Struck Down By The Blues" to the Cajun-flavored "Don’t Make No Sense" featuring Terrance Simien on accordion, and “Watcha Do To Me” with Elvin Bishop, the album delivers a blend of soulful rhythms and electrifying melodies.

From their debut self-titled album in 1979 to later releases like T-Bird Rhythm and the commercial hit Tuff Enuff, the Fabulous Thunderbirds continuously evolved their sound, blending blues with Cajun, rock 'n' roll, and soul influences. Despite lineup changes over the years, Kim Wilson's unwavering commitment to the band's musical vision has kept them thriving, ensuring their place as enduring legends in American music.

The overall impression is reminiscent of late 60s British blues, Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack, etc. The cover texts say that the backing band on "Delta Slim" is played by a group called Ten Pound Hammer and all but two of the tracks are named after someone called Sep Shank.

A guitarist since the age of 10, Moss was given his passport into the blues world by Buddy Scott, who noticed him at a jam session at Rosa’s Blues Lounge in Chicago. Soon, Moss was playing seven nights a week as a member of Buddy Scott’s Rib Tips Band. Moss’s guitar skills, quickly, became notorious on the local scene and he became an in-demand sideman. In 1996, Joe started his own band and has never looked back since. Keeping a full schedule, the band continues to record and tour across the country. In addition, Moss has recorded five albums of his own on 212 records label.

The JOE MOSS BAND is among one of the major leading heavy weights performing on the National Blues circuit today, making them a true force to be reckoned with. The band consists of Joe Moss (vocals and guitar),  Greg Sefner (Hammond organ), Dana Thompson (Drum) and Mike “Funktastic” Zabrin (Bass). The album also includes the fabulous background vocals of Ashley Otis and last but certainly not least the red-hot, killer CHICAGO HORNS, featuring Bryan Fritz (Sax), Norman Palm (Trombone) and Ryan Nyther (Trumpet) on two tracks!

Carson Downey Band - All The Way (2000)

                                                                 Carson Downey Band
The Carson Downey Band may appear to many as a "overnight sensation," but this superb Blues trio has been performing in the Halifax region for many years. They've gone by the names the Little City Blues Band and the Big City Blues Band before settling on "The Carson Downey Band." Their precise performances are a tribute to the time they've spent together perfecting their art. The fact that "All the Way" is their debut album is the biggest surprise.

At first sight, the Carson Downey band's 1997 discovery appears to be an instant success story. The boss of a record label chance to overhear the band performing via an open door. He looked in, impressed by the Canadian band's mix of blues and rock, and was taken aback by the sight of the guitarist playing the guitar with his teeth. The music executive immediately approached the band about a record deal.

While the narrative is correct, success did not happen overnight. The band had been together for over two decades and had developed a loyal fanbase in the region. Big City Blues Band and Little City Blues Band were their first names.

The Canadian band, which started in North Preston, near Halifax, had a fortuitous break when it was invited to perform at a showcase around the same time as the East Coast Music Awards (ECMA). They were heard by Andrew McCain, the head of Loggerhead Records. Loggerhead's debut album, All the Way, was recorded in 1999 and was released not long after.

The band's fast-paced mix of blues and rock gained a lot of attention and earned them several awards, including the Fender East Coast Guitarist of the Year in 2000. The band was named Best Blues Group and Best New Artist at the 2001 ECMA Awards. It won Drummer of the Year in the same year. The Maple Blues Awards named it Drummer of the Year and Best New Artist, while the African Nova Scotian Music Awards named it Artist of the Year and Album of the Year.

Following that came a half-dozen Real Blues Awards, including Best Live Act and Best Debut CD. The band was also presented with The Dutch Mason Award. They've played for troops all around the world, including in Afghanistan, Honolulu, Guam, Marshall Islands, China, and Tokyo, to mention a few. Carson Downey, guitarist and main vocalist, Marlowe Smith, bassist, and Murray Downey, drummer, are the members of the band.

Jed Thomas Band - Its about bloody time (2013)

                                                                Jed Thomas Band
Jed Thomas from Yorkshire (UK) plays a unique, unmistakable and great blues rock style which he has been celebrating live with Joe Bonamassa, Rory Gallagher Band, Buddy Guy and Nine Below Zero for many years. Stylistically, Jed can be located somewhere between Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix and Rory Gallagher, his show always has an immense 70s charm and plenty of room for improvisation.

Jed's blues guitar playing is a mix of classic Delta style, slide guitar and electric blues. Along with Paul Austwick on Hammond, Nibbsy Toase on bass and Fiete Blümel on the drums, the Jed Thomas Band impresses the audience and unfolds his magic live performance in the smallest club as well as at the biggest festival. Sydney Ellis - Live! Just Before Dawn [Live] (2011)

                                                                    Sydney Ellis
"Live! Just Before Dawn" is Sydney Ellis' fifth album. Previously released were "Goin' Home" (1994), "Amazing Grace" (1995), "Ask A Woman Who Knows" (1998) and "Tug River" (2003). The impressive singer was born in Red Jacket (West Virginia) and grew up in Cleveland (Ohio). Her career began in Los Angeles in 1991 and as the frontwoman of various bands she has performed in over three hundred clubs around Los Angeles. In addition to singing, traveling the world is another passion. It's great when you can combine the two, because Sydney Ellis has now given over a thousand concerts in twenty-five countries.

The protagonist's musical roots are in the blues. However, her recordings and live performances make it clear that she also cuts an excellent figure in soul, gospel and jazz. This fact is also proven by the current record "Live! Just Before Dawn".

Christoph Böhm aka BeBof is an outstanding guitarist who has his own band, BeBof DeLuxe & The Delta Horns, and also plays in the Ludwig Seuss Band and Al Jones. Keyboard player Martin Preiser is at home in many styles, studied jazz piano at the Conservatoire de Musique in Luxembourg and »has been a teacher at the Emmerich Smola Music School in Kaiserslautern since 1997.« With drummers Roland Weber and Christoph Zeitner and Doc Ellis on bass, Sydney Ellis has a real groove station behind her.

The album "Live! Just Before Dawn" doesn't ask the listener any questions, but gives answers. With compact songs or numbers that are refined with a lot of inspired improvisation, the singer and her band have released an impressive album.

In addition to her own compositions, the American puts her own stamp on songs by Preston Foster, Al Jackson, Elmore James, Koko Taylor and T-Bone Walker, for example. "Jump For Joy" is not only the title that is the perfect door opener for an extremely entertaining album, which leaves nothing to be desired even with its almost seventy-five minutes of playing time. The opener grooves, has drive and with the first solos from Martin Preiser and BeBof you can guess where the musical journey will take you.

The song "Fishin' Trip" goes deep into the blues. This slow blues is dynamic and her singing is almost guaranteed to give you goosebumps. If you expect the classic "Stormy Monday Blues" to be a piece that is played from the sheet, you're definitely wrong about Sydney Ellis & Co. They give the number a groovy jazz outfit. This gives the track a new side that is simply tongue-in-cheek. This number is awesome!
But watch out! There are more highlights to come. From the heart-rending slow blues "Trouble In Mind" to the emotional "I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody's Home" comes, in my opinion, the central piece of the live album. "Was It A Whisper", a composition written by Sydney Ellis, is the album's highlight. Soul, gospel, funk and blues are all in line and all genres are covered. At almost ten and a half minutes, this song is a brilliant musical journey, a gourmet delight, in a class of its own, and not just because of the floating groove.

Time flies, just like at a real concert. "Live! Just Before Dawn" is a gorgeous record in every respect and if "Stormy Monday Blues" was a surprising interpretation, then you can be sure that the reading of another classic ("I've Got My Mojo Working") is of the same high standard.

Syndey Ellis is a special singer who combines all facets of the blues and related styles in her voice. Many other artists can only dream of that. "Live! Just Before Dawn" is an excellent example of what live music should sound like in a twelve-bar setting.

Gary Cain - Next Stop (2022)

                                                                    Gary Cain
Gary Cain is a Canadian singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist and his latest release, Next Stop, is a stunning tour de force of musicianship. In addition to writing all the music and lyrics, Cain also provides all the vocals and handles all the guitar parts, the bass, percussion and drum programming. Indeed, the only other musician on the album is John Lee who provides B3 organ on the closing track, “A Short, Furious Goodbye”.

The opening track, “Billionaires In Space”, sets out Cain’s stall impressively and also sets the tone for the entire album. The lyrics display an acute political awareness, highlighting the ever-growing wealth gap in society. Cain sings: “Seas are rising, and you got no home. They don’t pay no taxes and we’re on our own. Billionaires in space” and “One small step for mankind to a living wage. Instead we’re living through a second gilded age. Time has come now, won’t you join me as we raise our collective middle finger to the billionaires in space.”

Cain is a mighty impressive guitarist, with a fleet-fingered, heavy-rock edge. “Confusion” is based around a single note riff that recalls Hendrix at his rockiest and a wild outro solo that accurately reflects the anguish of the lyrics. “Gatekeeper” has a funky rock edge and again raises societal issues in the lyrics.

This is blues-rock, but very much at the rock end of the spectrum. It is in-your-face, muscular and aggressive. The songs are often based around single note, heavy guitar riffs and the solos can make Johnny Winter sound like he’s under-playing. But it is also exceptionally well done. Cain is keenly aware of the importance of dynamics, for example in the breakdown before the guitar solo in “Keep On Comin’”.

The one outlier on the album is the aptly named instrumental, “Kitchen Sink” on which Cain demonstrates his mastery of country licks, albeit played at the same breakneck speed and with the same wild abandon as the other tracks on the album. Even here, however, Cain throws in a middle section that somehow recalls the overblown classicism of Ritchie Blackmore. Indeed, there are various hints of Blackmore’s influence throughout the album, particularly in the virtuosity of the guitar solos and the heavy single note riffs that frame many of the songs.

There are no ballads or slower songs on Next Stop. Even the gentler, jazz-rock tinged verses of “Gone” lead inextricably to a heavy, guitar-driven chorus and the slow, melodic guitar part that opens the instrumental “A Short, Furious Goodbye” quickly leads to the short, furious farewell envisaged by the title of the song.

Written and recorded in Austin, Texas, mixed by Brian Moncarz and mastered by Noah Mintz at Lacquer Channel Mastering in North York, Ontario, Next Stop is a ferocious release. Its heavy rock influence may not appeal to all blues fans but there is no denying the serious talent on display here.
